The headline refers to a historical promotion, not a price confirmed today. On June 7, 2024, PhoneArena reported that Amazon and Best Buy were selling the unlocked 128GB Google Pixel 8 Pro for $749, down from its $999 U.S. launch price. That was a $250 discount, or 25%. The report also listed discounts on larger storage options. Do not assume those prices are still available: the promotion’s terms could change, and current Amazon and Best Buy checkout prices have not been verified.
For a 2026 shopper, the useful question is whether a specific listing is still a good value after checking its price, condition, seller, warranty, and remaining software-support period.
The reported deal, by storage size
PhoneArena’s June 7, 2024 report described the offer as available at both Amazon and Best Buy for an unlocked Pixel 8 Pro. Its listed prices were:

The report listed Obsidian, Porcelain, and Bay color options and suggested the discounts applied across storage tiers and colors. Availability could vary by listing; those details should not be treated as a guarantee that every combination was in stock or eligible. PhoneArena called the promotion its best deal yet at that time, but that is a dated assessment—not proof of an all-time low across every retailer.

Is the $749 price live now?
There is no verified current Amazon or Best Buy checkout price in the available information. The original deal should therefore be read as a historical price, not a live offer. Google’s product page has surfaced a promotional “save $400” signal, but that alone does not establish the final price, model, stock, or promotion dates. Check the actual product page and checkout total before deciding; a search-result snippet or old deal headline is not enough.
At Amazon, confirm who sells and ships the phone: a marketplace listing can differ from one sold directly by Amazon. At Best Buy, make sure the displayed price is for a new device rather than open-box stock. At either retailer, verify the exact storage and color, that the model is unlocked, the condition, return window, warranty provider, delivery cost, and whether the price depends on activation, a trade-in, a membership, or a carrier plan. Taxes and shipping affect the amount you actually pay.

What buyers got in the Pixel 8 Pro
At launch, the Pixel 8 Pro was Google’s 2023 flagship. It has a 6.7-inch display, 12GB of RAM, Google’s Tensor G3 processor, a 5,000mAh battery, and three rear cameras: a 50MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP telephoto. It launched with Android 14 and also includes a temperature sensor. Google announced retail availability beginning October 12, 2023, with a U.S. starting price of $999.
Those specifications help explain why a $749 price drew attention: the phone combined a large display and a dedicated telephoto camera with Google’s Pixel photography features. But this is older hardware. Specifications alone cannot show how it compares with newer phones in sustained performance, battery life, charging, or current software features. Buyers who want the latest Tensor platform or newer Pixel capabilities should compare a current-generation model at its actual price rather than treating the old $999 launch price as the only benchmark.

Seven years of support does not mean seven years from your purchase
Google’s policy for Pixel 8 and later phones provides seven years of operating-system updates, security updates, and Feature Drops, counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the U.S. The Pixel 8 Pro first went on sale in October 2023, so buying one in 2026 does not start a fresh seven-year clock. Google described the Pixel 8 series as supported through approximately 2030; the remaining period is tied to the original availability date.

That long commitment is a real advantage for someone buying an older phone, but the device is already partway through its support cycle. Feature availability can also vary by country, language, account, app, and hardware. See Google’s Pixel update policy and its Pixel 8 support announcement for the terms.

- 128GB: The least expensive option, but a tighter fit if you record lots of 4K video, keep a large photo library on the device, or download substantial media for offline use.
- 256GB: A more comfortable long-term choice if the price premium is modest and you expect to keep the phone for years.
- 512GB: Most relevant to heavy photographers, video creators, or people who want extensive offline storage.
Usable space is lower than the advertised capacity because the operating system and other data occupy storage. Compare the price difference with your needs; do not pay so much for a storage upgrade that a newer phone becomes the better value. Google’s Pixel specifications page provides further device details.

New, open-box, or refurbished?
For an older model, the condition and protections attached to a listing matter as much as the headline price. If new stock costs only a little more, a clear return policy and full manufacturer warranty may be worth the difference. With open-box or refurbished stock, check battery condition or any battery guarantee, return rights, warranty coverage, seller reputation, and unlocked status. A phone stored or used for years may have a more worn battery than a new device, even if its software support remains in place.
Google says phones in its certified-refurbished program are unlocked, compatible with any carrier, and covered by the same update commitment as new Pixel owners. Check the individual listing for price, condition, warranty, and returns; the program’s general terms do not establish that a particular unit is available. Who should still consider it?
The Pixel 8 Pro can make sense if you prioritize Pixel photography, want an unlocked Android phone, like Google’s software, and can buy it substantially below comparable newer flagships. Its telephoto camera and large display distinguish it from a less expensive standard phone. It is a less compelling choice if a newer Pixel Pro is close in price, or if you value the newest processor and AI features, sustained gaming performance, very fast wired charging, or the longest possible battery life from a new device.
If the offer is for a refurbished or open-box phone, weigh the savings against battery uncertainty and the return and warranty terms. For a phone you plan to keep for several years, a small saving may not justify an unclear seller or weak protections.
Bottom line for a buyer today
The $749 figure was a strong, straightforward discount on the unlocked 128GB model when reported in June 2024: $250 below its $999 launch price. It is not evidence that Amazon or Best Buy has that price now, nor that $749 remains the best value in 2026. Compare the current delivered price for the exact model and condition with newer alternatives, and remember that Google’s seven-year support period started when the phone first became available—not when you buy it.
