PayPal announced on September 30, 2025, that Honey would add AI-shopping capabilities beginning with ChatGPT. The planned experience is designed to connect AI product recommendations with retailer links, current prices, alternative sellers, coupons and potential cashback. It is primarily a product-discovery and comparison layer—not an autonomous shopping agent that places orders without your approval.
The announcement is also easy to confuse with PayPal’s separate October 2025 partnership with OpenAI, which aims to support checkout inside ChatGPT. Honey helps move a recommendation toward a retailer; the PayPal-OpenAI initiative is intended to move supported products through discovery and payment within the AI conversation.

What PayPal Honey announced
PayPal said Honey would work alongside AI assistants during shopping research. If ChatGPT recommends a product, Honey is intended to identify that product and connect it with shopping information such as:
- Live or current product links
- Prices from multiple merchants
- Alternative retailers, including options an AI recommendation may have omitted
- Coupons, promotions and, where applicable, cashback or personalized offers
PayPal described the goal as turning an AI-generated recommendation into a more actionable shopping result. The announcement did not establish that Honey verifies every recommendation, covers every retailer or always finds the lowest final price. PayPal’s announcement used forward-looking language, so the capability should be treated as an announced and evolving rollout rather than a universally available feature.

How the planned Honey experience works
- You ask ChatGPT a shopping question, such as “Find highly rated coffee makers” or “Show me headphones under $200.”
- ChatGPT produces product recommendations.
- Honey detects the recommended products while you browse.
- The extension matches those products against Honey’s shopping catalog.
- Honey displays retailer links, prices, alternative sellers and available offers.
- You choose a seller and complete the purchase through the retailer’s checkout or an eligible PayPal or Honey checkout flow.
For example, a ChatGPT answer might recommend a particular headphone model. Honey’s intended role is to help identify where that model is sold, compare participating offers and test relevant coupon codes. You still need to confirm the model, seller, price and checkout terms before buying.
Is Honey’s ChatGPT integration available to everyone?
- Announcement: September 30, 2025.
- Initial plan: United States, Google Chrome on desktop.
- Expansion: PayPal said other major browsers and AI assistants could follow.
- Current qualification: Access may depend on your country, browser, device, account, merchant and product.
PayPal’s general Honey extension is described as free and is listed as working with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera. That broader extension support does not prove that the AI-specific experience works identically in every browser. PayPal’s consumer materials also describe related ChatGPT checkout functionality as rolling out gradually, with availability potentially limited by user, region or merchant.
Honey’s current product page says it tests available coupon codes on more than 30,000 popular sites, but that is a marketing claim about the general extension—not a guarantee that every site has a valid coupon or that every merchant appears in the AI-shopping experience. Honey versus PayPal checkout in ChatGPT
These are related parts of PayPal’s broader agentic-commerce strategy, but they are not the same launch.

On October 28, 2025, PayPal announced its separate partnership with OpenAI. That initiative involves PayPal’s merchant network, payment infrastructure and the Agentic Commerce Protocol. PayPal said it was intended to make millions of products discoverable and purchasable through ChatGPT, but rollout and merchant availability can vary.
What shoppers should check before buying
1. Verify the final price
A displayed “current” price can change before checkout. Shipping, tax, location, inventory, membership pricing, product variants and seller changes may alter the total. Always review the final cart total at the retailer or PayPal checkout.

2. Confirm the exact product
AI may describe a product family while a linked page features a different model, capacity, color or condition. Compare the model number, specifications, seller identity, new or refurbished status, warranty and return policy.
3. Treat coupon results as opportunities, not guarantees
A code can be expired, restricted to new customers, limited to certain products, subject to a minimum spend or excluded from sale items. PayPal says Honey will tell shoppers when it searches but does not find a code that beats the existing price.
4. Check the checkout route
A retailer checkout, Honey Checkout, PayPal checkout on a merchant site and PayPal checkout inside an AI assistant may have different terms. PayPal says eligible purchases through Honey Checkout using a PayPal account can receive PayPal Purchase Protection, while guest checkout may not qualify for the same protection. Review the applicable terms rather than assuming that every journey has identical coverage.

5. Consider privacy
PayPal’s support material says connecting Honey and PayPal Rewards can involve shopping history, transaction value, returns, preferred merchants or categories, IP address and inferred shopping preferences. Read the relevant account and privacy settings before linking services. Payment tokenization can protect payment details, but it does not make the entire shopping process risk-free.
Also look for clear labeling of sponsored, affiliate or partner links. Honey is a commercial shopping and rewards platform, not necessarily a complete neutral index of every available retailer. A merchant’s participation, offers or commercial relationship may influence what can be shown.

What this means for merchants
PayPal is also building merchant infrastructure for AI shopping. Its Store Sync documentation says eligible merchants can make catalogs available to AI shopping assistants, support carts and purchases, and receive orders through existing order-management systems.
The current documentation describes important limits: Store Sync is aimed at physical goods sold to U.S. customers in U.S. dollars and requires an existing PayPal merchant relationship plus Orders v2 support or a compatible Braintree setup. That is separate from an ordinary shopper installing Honey. Digital goods, subscriptions, non-U.S. sales and merchants without the required technical setup may not fit those requirements.

Merchants evaluating these tools should also examine attribution, commissions, customer ownership, returns, customer support and whether AI exposure creates incremental demand or simply redirects shoppers who would have found the store anyway. PayPal’s broader AI developer resources provide the relevant merchant-facing starting point.
Bottom line
PayPal Honey’s announced ChatGPT integration is best understood as an AI-assisted product-discovery and deal-comparison layer. It is intended to bridge the gap between “the AI recommended this item” and “where can I buy the exact item, at what price and with which offers?”
