Yes, Patreon can be more expensive on an iPhone—but not for every subscriber. The difference applies when an eligible membership or digital purchase uses Apple’s in-app payment system. Creators may pass Apple’s fee to iOS customers or absorb it themselves. In the U.S., Patreon says members can generally use mobile web checkout instead.

Patreon began rolling out Apple in-app purchases for new memberships in November 2024. Patreon says new members joining through iOS after November 4, 2024, may be affected. This is not a single platform-wide Patreon price increase announced for August 2026; the price depends on the creator, purchase channel, membership history and location. Why a 30% fee can mean a 42.86% price increase
Apple’s standard commission for eligible new subscriptions is generally 30%. But Apple deducts that percentage from the final transaction, rather than adding 30% to the original price.
If a creator wants to receive the same $10 gross amount from an iOS transaction, the calculation is:

$10 ÷ 0.70 = $14.2857That means the iOS price would need to be about $14.29—an increase of approximately 42.86%—for Apple to take 30% and leave $10. Saying that Apple simply “adds 30%” is therefore misleading.

These are mathematical examples, not guaranteed displayed prices. Taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing and price-point rounding can change the final amount.
Who actually pays more?
New iOS members
A new member who joins through Patreon’s iOS app may see a higher price if the creator chooses to preserve earnings after Apple’s commission. Another creator may keep the same customer price and absorb the deduction.

Existing members
A membership established before the relevant November 2024 rollout is generally not placed into Apple’s new fee structure merely because the member later opens Patreon’s iOS app. However, canceling and restarting a membership can create a different billing arrangement, so check the checkout screen before confirming a new subscription.
U.S. members
Patreon says U.S. fans can choose its mobile web checkout for eligible memberships. That can avoid Apple’s in-app-purchase fee while leaving the membership linked to the same Patreon account.
Members outside the U.S.
Patreon says Apple’s in-app system is generally mandatory for eligible digital purchases made inside the iOS app outside the U.S. Do not assume that the U.S. browser-checkout option is available in every country.

How U.S. fans can compare prices
- Open the creator’s Patreon page in Safari or another mobile browser.
- Sign in to the correct Patreon account.
- Select the desired membership.
- Choose Patreon’s web checkout instead of Apple’s in-app option, if it is presented.
- Review the final total, including any taxes, before paying.
- Return to the Patreon app afterward. The membership should remain associated with the account used for checkout.
The fee is determined by the checkout channel—not simply by whether the Patreon app is installed. Deleting the app does not avoid the charge, and continuing to use the app after paying on the web does not by itself route the membership through Apple.

What changes after one year?
Apple’s standard subscription terms generally reduce its commission from 30% to 15% after a subscriber has accumulated one year of continuous paid service in the relevant subscription group. Apple’s subscription documentation describes the underlying revenue split.

Patreon says it passes the savings from Apple’s lower rate to creators. That does not guarantee that the subscriber’s displayed price automatically falls after the first year. The creator’s pricing configuration and Patreon’s treatment of the transaction determine what the customer sees.
There is also a China-specific exception: Patreon says Apple’s rate for relevant members based in China changed to 25% during the first year and 12% afterward, with the new rates applying to new memberships beginning in April 2026. Those rates should not be generalized to other countries.
Memberships are not the only affected purchases
One-time digital products purchased inside Patreon’s iOS app can also be subject to Apple’s in-app-purchase rules. A membership started and renewed through Apple follows a different billing path from a membership originally purchased on the web. Accessing content in the app is not the same as purchasing through the app.

What creators need to decide
- Pass through the cost: Increasing the iOS price can preserve approximately the same gross earnings, but a large visible price difference may reduce conversions and confuse fans.
- Absorb the cost: Keeping the same customer-facing price is simpler for fans but reduces the creator’s proceeds from eligible iOS transactions.
- Direct U.S. fans to web checkout: This can avoid Apple’s fee for eligible U.S. memberships, but it adds checkout friction and is not a universal solution for international fans.
Apple’s commission is also not the creator’s entire fee burden. Patreon says its platform fee still applies; the standard platform fee is 10% for creators on the standard plan, while legacy creators may have different rates. Payment processing, taxes, payouts and currency conversion can also affect proceeds. See Patreon’s creator-fees FAQ and fee overview.
How to tell whether a price difference applies to you
- Where did you sign up? A web membership and an Apple-billed membership can follow different rules.
- Where are you paying? The app’s Apple checkout is different from Patreon’s website checkout opened on an iPhone.
- Where do you live? U.S. fans may have a web alternative that is not broadly available elsewhere.
- What does the final checkout screen show? Compare the actual total rather than assuming every creator uses the same markup.
The practical conclusion is simple: Patreon is not universally becoming 43% more expensive for all iPhone users. Eligible purchases made through Apple’s in-app system can cost more when a creator passes on Apple’s commission, while some creators absorb it and U.S. members may be able to pay through Patreon’s web checkout instead.
