OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership on May 16, 2024. The agreement gives OpenAI access to Reddit’s Data API and is intended to bring enhanced Reddit content to ChatGPT and future OpenAI products. Reddit also said it would use OpenAI technology for features aimed at users and moderators, while OpenAI would become a Reddit advertising partner.
That is narrower—and less specific—than saying “all Reddit posts are now in ChatGPT.” The public announcement did not disclose the deal’s value, exact training permissions, affected models, user opt-out process, treatment of deleted posts, or a detailed launch schedule.
What OpenAI and Reddit actually announced
The companies described a commercial data and product partnership with four main parts:

- Reddit content in ChatGPT and other products. The stated goal was to help users discover and engage with Reddit communities, particularly around recent topics.
- AI features for Reddit users and moderators. Reddit said it would build features using OpenAI’s models, but did not publish a detailed feature list or launch timetable.
- An advertising relationship. OpenAI became a Reddit advertising partner. This is a separate commercial arrangement and does not prove that Reddit ads would appear inside ChatGPT.

Does this mean ChatGPT was trained on Reddit posts?
The safest answer is: OpenAI received authorized access to Reddit data, while the precise technical use of that data was not publicly explained.
Contemporary reports characterized the agreement as allowing OpenAI to train AI models on Reddit data. For example, TechCrunch and Ars Technica emphasized model training in their coverage.
However, the companies’ own announcement primarily confirms access to Reddit’s Data API and planned product integration. It does not specify:
- Whether the data is used for pretraining, fine-tuning, evaluation, retrieval, product search, or several of these;
- Which historical posts and comments are covered;
- Whether deleted or edited material is excluded from every system;
- Which OpenAI models or products receive the data; or
- Whether ChatGPT directly searches Reddit for every answer involving a Reddit topic.
Training and retrieval are different operations. A model might learn statistical patterns from a dataset without quoting a particular post. A product might also retrieve or display current Reddit content without permanently incorporating that content into model weights. The public announcement does not provide enough detail to say exactly which combination applies.
What “access to the Data API” means
Reddit’s Data API is a structured, programmatic way for an authorized application to access Reddit material. It is different from a person manually browsing a subreddit in a web browser.
API access can give an AI company a more organized and potentially fresher stream of posts, comments, communities and related information. That could be useful for questions about fast-changing subjects, product problems, niche hobbies and ongoing discussions.
It does not mean OpenAI received a publicly documented, unrestricted copy of Reddit’s entire database. API access also does not reveal the private licensing price or all permitted uses under the commercial agreement. Reddit’s current Data API Terms govern general API use and were revised July 20, 2026, but they do not disclose the private terms of this partnership.
What the deal means for Reddit users
Your posts may be part of a commercial data arrangement
Reddit is built largely from user-generated posts and comments, including personal experiences, technical discussions, opinions and questions. The partnership confirms that Reddit content can be made available to OpenAI through an authorized commercial route.
The public announcements do not explain whether individual contributors receive payment, whether revenue is shared with authors, or whether a user can opt out specifically of this OpenAI partnership. Those points should be treated as undisclosed, not assumed.
Deleting a post is not automatically the same as removing every prior copy
Reddit’s live page, an API response, a cached copy, a transformed dataset and a model trained on data are technically different things. In general, deleting or editing material on a website does not by itself prove that every previously accessed, cached or processed copy disappears from all downstream systems.
The OpenAI-Reddit announcement does not explain how deletions, edits, corrections or removal requests propagate through the partnership. That is an implementation and policy question that the public material does not answer.

Reddit can provide fast-moving discussions and specialized community knowledge, but its content is not uniformly fact-checked. Posts may contain errors, jokes, spam, personal data, medical anecdotes, partisan claims or coordinated activity. Upvotes and moderator activity can provide useful signals, but popularity is not proof of expertise or truth.
An AI-generated summary can also strip away important context, such as whether a comment was speculative, heavily disputed or later corrected. Readers should check the original thread when the source, timing or surrounding discussion matters.
What users should not assume
- Not every Reddit post is necessarily available to ChatGPT.
- ChatGPT is not confirmed to search the complete Reddit archive.
- A Reddit-like answer does not prove that ChatGPT retrieved a Reddit post.
- A Reddit citation does not guarantee that the information is current, representative or correct.
- The announcement does not establish that deleted posts are removed from every OpenAI system.
- The announcement does not establish an individual compensation or opt-out program.
- Paying for ChatGPT Plus does not guarantee special access to a Reddit database.
Why Reddit made the agreement
The partnership fits Reddit’s broader effort to treat large-scale commercial access to its data as a negotiated business activity rather than an unrestricted free resource.
Licensing revenue is one motivation. AI companies want large, current and varied datasets, while platforms increasingly seek compensation when their content is used commercially.

Distribution is another. If ChatGPT helps people discover Reddit communities, Reddit could gain new users and attention. The trade-off is that an AI summary could also substitute for a direct visit, reducing traffic to the original thread.
Product development gives Reddit a way to use OpenAI models for tools serving users and moderators. The announcement, however, did not specify whether those tools would handle moderation, search, recommendations or another function.
Advertising adds a separate source of commercial value. OpenAI’s status as a Reddit advertising partner should not be conflated with data licensing or interpreted as a promise that ChatGPT will display Reddit advertising.

Why Reddit data is valuable to AI companies
Reddit combines several characteristics that are attractive for AI development:

- Large volumes of human-written conversation;
- Topic-specific communities organized around specialized interests;
- Questions, answers, disagreements and first-person experiences;
- Rapidly changing discussion about products, events and emerging issues; and
- Voting and moderation signals that can help indicate relevance.
These characteristics can make Reddit useful for understanding how people discuss a subject. They do not make Reddit a neutral or authoritative factual database. Community norms, demographics, moderation decisions and popularity patterns all shape what becomes visible.
How the deal compares with Reddit’s Google partnership
Reddit had already announced an expanded partnership with Google in February 2024 involving structured access to fresher Reddit content and AI capabilities. The Google announcement described the technical and product relationship.
Contemporary Associated Press reporting put the Google arrangement at approximately $60 million per year. That figure belongs to the Google deal. It should not be used as the value of the OpenAI agreement.
OpenAI and Reddit did not disclose a dollar value for their May 2024 partnership in the announcements reviewed. The public materials also do not disclose its duration, payment structure or any revenue-sharing terms.

- The financial value and duration of the agreement;
- The exact categories of posts, comments and metadata covered;
- Whether the data is used for training, retrieval, evaluation, or multiple purposes;
- Which OpenAI models and products are affected;
- Whether Reddit users have a partnership-specific opt-out mechanism;
- Whether individual authors receive compensation;
- How deletions, edits and corrections are handled downstream; and
- When the promised user-facing features launched and how they work.
Does ChatGPT currently have a dedicated Reddit search?
OpenAI’s general ChatGPT Search help page says the search feature is available to Free, Plus, Team, Edu and Enterprise users, including logged-out Free users. That establishes general search availability, not a dedicated Reddit integration or guaranteed Reddit access.

Readers who need complete threads, vote totals, moderator context or the original wording should use Reddit directly. Readers using ChatGPT should treat any Reddit-derived summary as an aid to discovery rather than a replacement for checking the source.
Conflict-of-interest disclosure
OpenAI’s announcement disclosed that Sam Altman was a shareholder in Reddit. It also said the partnership was led by OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap and approved by OpenAI’s independent board.
Those disclosures are material context, but they do not by themselves establish wrongdoing. The relevant point is that the financial interest and governance information were disclosed in the announcement.
What this means for ChatGPT customers
The partnership does not create a separate consumer subscription or a disclosed Reddit-specific entitlement. ChatGPT Free may be sufficient for readers who simply want to test general ChatGPT Search. Paid plans can provide different usage limits and features, but purchasing Plus or another plan does not guarantee special Reddit functionality.
Developers should also distinguish ChatGPT subscriptions from the OpenAI API: API usage is billed separately. Reddit developers likewise need to follow Reddit’s applicable registration, use and commercial restrictions rather than assuming that ordinary browsing permits automated commercial access.
