OpenAI’s late-December 2025 search for a Head of Preparedness was real, and the reported compensation was $555,000 a year plus equity. The job was not simply to “worry” about AI: it was a senior role intended to assess serious risks, test safeguards and advise leadership about deploying powerful models. Public materials do not establish that the role had unilateral authority to stop a release.
What was Sam Altman hiring for?
OpenAI was seeking a Head of Preparedness, a senior leader for the company’s work on preparing for and mitigating risks from increasingly capable AI systems. CEO Sam Altman described the position as stressful and said the successful candidate would need to get up to speed quickly. His comments named concerns including cybersecurity, biological capabilities and systems that might help improve AI itself. Those were Altman’s stated concerns, not proof that a specific catastrophe was imminent. TechCrunch reported the announcement and its context.
“Preparedness” is broader than abstract AI alignment or a public-facing ethics role. It combines technical risk assessment, safety engineering, threat analysis and deployment governance. The head would coordinate work across teams and advise decision-makers; the remit should not be read as one person personally controlling every AI risk or every product launch.

Which risks would the role assess?
OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework tracks high-risk capabilities and sets out processes for evaluating them. Its named areas are capability categories, not evidence that a particular model has crossed a catastrophic threshold.
Cybersecurity
AI can support defensive security work, but increasingly capable systems could also help discover vulnerabilities or automate parts of cyber operations. Preparedness work asks what a model can do, how reliably it can do it, and what controls are needed before and after deployment.
Biological and chemical capabilities
Scientific assistance can be beneficial, while some capabilities could lower barriers to misuse. OpenAI says its approach includes evaluating relevant capabilities and using safeguards such as red teaming and monitoring. Its discussion of this area is available in Preparing for future AI capabilities in biology.

AI self-improvement and autonomy
Models that can contribute to AI development raise questions about the pace of progress and the adequacy of human oversight. The framework also identifies research areas including long-range autonomy, sandbagging (intentional underperformance), autonomous replication and adaptation, and undermining safeguards. It lists nuclear and radiological risks among research categories as well. These are areas for evaluation, not claims that current systems can carry out every scenario.
Other harms
Altman’s public description also referred to mental-health concerns. More broadly, preparedness for frontier risks is not a substitute for addressing immediate product harms such as fraud, privacy violations, unsafe advice, misinformation or emotional dependency. The existence of a specialized role does not show that every risk receives equal attention or has been solved.
OpenAI’s April 15, 2025 Preparedness Framework update describes its tracked categories, evaluation process and safeguards. The framework is a company policy; its descriptions of intended controls are not independent proof that those controls work in every real-world setting.

How preparedness is supposed to work
The practical task is a cycle of evaluation and decision-making, not simply writing a list of dangers:

Test models for relevant high-risk abilities before deployment, using evaluations and scenario analysis.
- Document findings. Prepare capability reports and assess whether safeguards are adequate for the system’s risks.
- Challenge the results. Use red teams and external expertise to look for weaknesses that internal testing may miss.
- Apply mitigations. OpenAI describes defense-in-depth measures such as access controls, monitoring, safeguards and incident response.
- Inform deployment decisions. The framework says sufficiently minimized severe risks are a condition for deploying a high-capability system, with reviews and recommendations feeding into leadership decisions.
- Monitor after release. Deployed models can encounter users, tools and combinations of prompts that pre-release tests did not cover, so monitoring and response remain necessary.
OpenAI’s Frontier Governance Framework, published May 28, 2026, presents the Preparedness Framework as a foundation for managing serious frontier-model risks and connects it to reporting, incident response and evolving legal requirements. The two frameworks are related but distinct: preparedness describes risk assessment and safeguards; frontier governance sets out a broader public governance and compliance layer.
Could the Head of Preparedness stop a model release?
The public descriptions establish a role in assessing risks and advising leadership, but they do not establish that the Head of Preparedness had a unilateral veto over product launches. Technical evaluation, a safety recommendation and the final executive decision are different forms of authority. Board oversight and legal or regulatory obligations are separate again.
To judge how much power such a role has, the important questions are institutional: Does the safety leader report independently? Can they require further testing or delay a release? Do they have early access to development decisions, adequate staff and a testing budget? Are disagreements recorded or disclosed to a board, regulators or the public? The public materials cited here do not answer all of those questions for the original position.

The hire fit into an existing safety function rather than establishing preparedness work from scratch. OpenAI already had Preparedness and Safety Systems work; contemporary coverage also reported that Aleksander Madry, previously associated with preparedness, had moved to work focused on AI reasoning. That reported reassignment indicates an organizational change, not proof that the company abandoned its preparedness effort. TechCrunch reported the change.
A dedicated senior role can give evaluations and mitigations a clearer owner as models become more capable and deployment decisions more consequential. It can also help coordinate technical teams, security work and leadership review. But safety functions inside a commercial company operate alongside incentives to ship products and compete. The role’s significance depends on access, authority, resources and accountability—not the title or salary alone.
Is OpenAI still hiring for this job?
The Head of Preparedness search was announced in December 2025; it should not be described as an open vacancy without confirmation of the original listing. As of August 16, 2026, the official OpenAI careers page identified in the available materials listed a related but differently titled Frontier AI Risks Lead role in San Francisco, within Intelligence & Investigations. Its remit includes analyzing frontier-AI misuse, abuse, strategic risks and scenarios over the next 6–24 months. The available information does not establish whether the original Head of Preparedness role was filled, renamed or closed.
What the hire does—and does not—tell us
The announcement shows that OpenAI considered frontier-risk management important enough to recruit a highly paid senior leader. It does not prove that a dangerous model was imminent, that the person could independently block deployment, or that the company’s safeguards were effective. Nor does it settle disagreements over which AI risks deserve priority: catastrophic frontier risks and harms already experienced by users differ in evidence, time horizon and remedy.
Preparedness work also faces structural trade-offs. More testing can slow deployment; publishing detailed findings can aid accountability but expose information useful to attackers; and a centralized leader can coordinate decisions while becoming a bottleneck. Internal evaluations may be limited by access or incentives, while outside reviewers may not control the final decision. Even a mitigation that works in testing can fail when a deployed system meets new users, tools or abuse strategies.

It is whether the person can obtain the evidence, resources and authority needed to act when an evaluation identifies a risk—and whether anyone outside the company can scrutinize that decision.
