OpenAI launched the GPT Store on January 10, 2024, letting builders publish custom versions of ChatGPT for public discovery. But the launch did not include a generally available payment system: OpenAI said U.S. builders would eventually be paid based on engagement, without publishing rates or a payment formula. It later described a limited test with selected U.S. builders. For anyone weighing the Store as an income source, the key distinction is simple: publishing a GPT can bring visibility, but it is not the same as having a reliable way to earn money from it.
What OpenAI launched
The GPT Store was a discovery directory inside ChatGPT for custom GPTs: specialized versions of ChatGPT configured with instructions, knowledge files, and, in some cases, external actions. Users could browse categories including productivity, education, programming, research, and lifestyle, and find featured or trending GPTs. OpenAI said more than three million custom GPTs had been created by launch day. OpenAI’s January 10, 2024 announcement initially described access for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users.
This was marketplace-like, but not an app store in the usual financial sense. GPTs did not launch with individual prices, a standard checkout, a published commission, or a public earnings dashboard. They ran within ChatGPT rather than as independently installed apps with their own customer accounts and payment relationships.
Access has since changed. OpenAI’s current GPT documentation says signed-in ChatGPT users can use GPTs, while creating or editing them requires a paid subscription. Managed workspaces may have additional restrictions, so access and publishing rights depend on the account and its administrator settings.

What builders could do at launch
Builders could create a GPT and publish it for public discovery, subject to OpenAI’s review and requirements. The launch instructions called for saving it for “Everyone,” verifying the Builder Profile, and meeting OpenAI’s usage policies and GPT brand guidelines. A link-only GPT was not the same as listing it in the public Store.
Current publishing requirements are more detailed. OpenAI’s publishing guidance covers builder profile completion, verification where required, workspace permissions, and other eligibility checks. Public GPTs that use actions must include a valid Privacy Policy URL. GPTs may also be blocked from publication or need changes if they do not meet policy or product requirements.
Publishing is not a guarantee of prominent placement or traffic. OpenAI controls review, discovery, and ranking, and workspace administrators can limit what their members create or share.

What “revenue sharing” meant—and what it did not mean
OpenAI’s launch announcement said it would begin a GPT builder revenue program in the first quarter of 2024. It said U.S. builders would be paid based on user engagement with their GPTs. That was an announcement of a planned program, not a disclosed universal payout promise or a conventional store commission.
The announcement did not define an engagement formula, a rate, a minimum threshold, a payout schedule, or how usage would be verified. It also did not say whether payment would come from ChatGPT subscription revenue, a separate pool, or another source; whether free-user or enterprise usage would count; or whether a builder would receive a percentage of revenue. There was no published direct-purchase price for GPTs. In short, “revenue sharing” did not tell creators how much they might earn—or whether they would qualify.
What happened after the launch
OpenAI later described monetization as an experiment involving a small group of selected U.S.-based builders whose GPTs were popular and engaging. A Developer Community discussion reproducing the program FAQ said additional builders were not being accepted at that point. That is evidence of a limited pilot, not a generally open enrollment program.

The current OpenAI publishing and GPT overview materials explain how to create, share, and use GPTs, but do not set out public, generally available builder-payment terms. The careful conclusion is therefore that OpenAI announced an engagement-based program, later tested earnings with selected U.S. builders, and has not publicly documented a broad payment structure or open enrollment path in the cited current materials. That does not establish that the program has been cancelled.
Why paying GPT builders is complicated
A payment system based on engagement sounds straightforward, but raw activity is a weak measure of economic value. One GPT might help a user solve a costly problem in one interaction; another might generate many low-value messages. Counting messages could reward volume rather than usefulness.
OpenAI would also need to decide what created the value: the builder’s instructions, uploaded knowledge, the underlying model, an external action, or ChatGPT’s distribution. Any usage-linked reward risks automated or repetitive traffic, copied GPTs, deceptive descriptions, and other attempts to inflate engagement. A robust program would need clear rules, quality controls, and ways to detect abuse.

There is also a platform incentive question. A useful GPT could make ChatGPT more valuable and encourage subscription retention, benefiting OpenAI without necessarily generating a direct payment for its builder. Meanwhile, creators depend on OpenAI for ranking, user access, platform policies, model availability, and analytics. A successful listing does not give its creator control over those levers.

Yes, but it is safer to treat the Store as a channel for experimentation, reach, or demonstration—not as a dependable income stream. A GPT can help a creator test whether people want a workflow, showcase expertise, educate an audience, or introduce users to a separate service. A listing alone does not automatically create a customer list, recurring billing, portable user data, or guaranteed traffic.

A GPT operates inside ChatGPT; the API is the route for building an assistant into an external website or service. That gives a business more control over its product and pricing, but also makes it responsible for development, hosting, support, customer acquisition, compliance, and payment processing. API usage costs must be accounted for when setting margins.
Before investing heavily, a creator should be able to answer three practical questions: Is there a repeat problem worth solving? Can the product reach customers without relying entirely on Store ranking? And does the expected revenue cover model, software, support, and acquisition costs? A paid ChatGPT subscription may be needed to create or edit a GPT, but publishing should not be assumed to repay that cost.
Privacy and durability matter, too
A GPT can use external actions to connect to third-party services. When it does, information may be sent to those services; OpenAI says it does not audit or control how external services use or store data. Builders should explain data handling clearly and provide the required privacy-policy link for public actions. Users should not assume a Store listing is automatically safe simply because it appears in OpenAI’s directory.
Builders should also expect platform changes. OpenAI’s GPT documentation says a GPT may be switched to a similar current model if its original model is no longer available. That can preserve access while changing behavior or output quality. For a business built on precise instructions or predictable results, model changes are a product risk, not just a technical detail.
