Yes—but the precise claim is that OnePlus said it shipped 11 million smartphones worldwide during calendar 2021. The company’s separate “more than 10 million sold” milestone referred to the Nord product line cumulatively from its July 2020 launch through February 2022, not to 10 million Nord phones sold during 2021 alone.
What OnePlus actually announced
In a February 28, 2022 community announcement, OnePlus reported three different milestones:

- 11 million OnePlus smartphones shipped globally in 2021, which the company described as its highest annual shipment total at that time.
- More than 10 million Nord devices sold cumulatively since the Nord line launched in July 2020.
- 20 million Red Cable Club members worldwide, a separate ecosystem-membership figure rather than a sales number.
Those figures are often compressed into the headline “OnePlus sold over 10 million smartphones in 2021,” but they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Sold versus shipped: why the wording matters
OnePlus used the word shipped for the 11-million company-wide figure. Shipments generally measure phones sent to retailers, carriers and other distribution channels. They are not necessarily the same as phones purchased by consumers during that exact period.
“Sell-through” is the more precise term for retail purchases by end customers. OnePlus did not provide an independently audited, OnePlus-only global sell-through figure in the cited announcement. Therefore, the most defensible wording is: OnePlus said it shipped 11 million smartphones globally in 2021.
The two 10-million-plus claims are different

The available evidence does not show that OnePlus sold 10 million Nord phones during 2021, nor that Nord represented 10 million of the company’s 11 million annual shipments.
What drove OnePlus’s growth?
OnePlus did not publish a model-by-model breakdown of the 11 million shipments. Third-party research nevertheless points to several contributors:

- Nord expansion: The Nord family moved OnePlus beyond its traditional premium-flagship focus into mid-range and lower-priced phones.
- Nord N models: Counterpoint said these models were particularly important to OnePlus growth in North America and Western Europe during the second quarter of 2021.
- OnePlus 9 series: Counterpoint identified the flagship series alongside Nord as a contributor to OnePlus-related growth in 2021.
- Affordable 5G demand: Lower-priced 5G devices broadened the potential customer base as buyers became more price-sensitive.
- U.S. distribution opportunities: The withdrawal of LG from the smartphone market created room for brands such as OnePlus, Motorola and Nokia HMD, according to Counterpoint’s U.S. market analysis.
These factors help explain the momentum, but they do not establish how many units each product contributed.
How fast was OnePlus growing?
Counterpoint’s regional and quarterly data shows strong momentum, although none of these percentages should be mistaken for a full-year global unit-growth rate:
- OnePlus growth reached 170% year over year in Q2 2021, with Nord N models cited as a major contributor in North America and Western Europe (Counterpoint).
- OnePlus grew 55% year over year in India in Q3 2021, with the Nord series identified as a driver (Counterpoint).
- Reporting on OnePlus’s 2021 update cited 257% year-over-year global shipment growth in the first half of 2021 and 428% growth in the United States. Those are first-half comparisons, not full-year results.
The wider 2021 smartphone market
Counterpoint estimated that global smartphone shipments reached roughly 1.39 billion units in 2021, up about 4% year over year. The market was still dealing with COVID-19 disruption and component shortages.
OnePlus benefited from demand for affordable 5G phones and from openings in the U.S. market after LG’s exit. However, independent brand comparisons require caution because corporate reporting changed during the year.

OnePlus and Oppo became increasingly integrated operationally. Counterpoint’s 2021 global market reporting said its Oppo figures included OnePlus beginning in the third quarter. Canalys made a similar inclusion in its worldwide shipment data.
That means:
- Oppo’s reported annual total cannot be used to calculate OnePlus’s standalone shipments.
- Some market-share tables may not list OnePlus separately in late 2021.
- OnePlus’s own 11-million statement remains the clearest company-specific figure in the cited material.
- It is not methodologically sound to compare the 11 million directly with standalone annual figures from other vendors unless the definitions and reporting periods match.
What the milestone proves—and what it does not
The announcement supports the conclusion that OnePlus had its strongest shipment year to that point and that its broadened product strategy was gaining traction. It does not provide:
- an audited global retail sell-through total;
- a model-by-model split of the 11 million smartphones;
- proof that Nord alone accounted for most of the annual shipments; or
- a reliable standalone OnePlus global market share for all of 2021.
Counterpoint also discussed a 33% OnePlus-related revenue increase in the context of Oppo’s reporting. That figure should be attributed to Counterpoint’s analysis, not presented as an audited standalone OnePlus revenue statement.
The most accurate way to state the result
OnePlus said it shipped 11 million smartphones globally in calendar 2021. Separately, it said the Nord line had sold more than 10 million units cumulatively since launching in July 2020. “Sold over 10 million smartphones in 2021” is therefore a broadly understandable headline, but it needs the shipment, product-scope and time-period qualifications above.
