The OneDrive photo-storage change in this headline is not new. Microsoft was reported to have announced it in September 2023, with a gradual rollout scheduled to begin October 16, 2023. The reported change would make photo data in OneDrive Gallery and albums count separately toward an account’s storage quota. The available reporting does not verify the exact calculation or whether the policy is still applied the same way in 2026, so check your own account before deleting files or paying for more storage.
What Microsoft was reported to change
According to contemporary reporting on a Microsoft email, photo data saved in a user’s OneDrive Gallery and in albums would count separately toward Microsoft storage. In practical terms, a photo already backed up to OneDrive could use more quota when it was also included in an album.
That is not enough detail to conclude that OneDrive made a full-resolution copy every time a photo appeared in an album. The report does not specify whether the separately counted data was the original file, an album representation, or other data. It also does not establish whether a photo in several albums would be counted repeatedly. Avoid treating every repeated thumbnail or album appearance as proof of duplicate files.

- One year later: The reported temporary storage bonus would ordinarily have expired for recipients in 2024, unless Microsoft extended or replaced it.
As of August 2026, “will soon change” is stale wording. The source establishes the announced plan and intended rollout, not that every account received it, that the rollout completed worldwide, or that the policy and bonus remain unchanged today.

Who might have noticed a difference?
The users most likely to be affected were those who backed up photos to OneDrive, organized them into OneDrive albums, and had limited free space left. Someone who only stored camera-roll photos and did not use albums might have seen little or no effect, according to the contemporary report.
There is no verified account-by-account eligibility guide in the available evidence. It does not settle whether the change covered work or school tenants, family accounts, legacy plans, all regions, or every OneDrive app. Your own storage page and Microsoft account notices are more useful than assuming the old report applies identically to everyone.

What was the one-year storage bonus?
The report said users who reached their storage limit because of the change would receive a storage bonus lasting one year. It did not establish the bonus size, precisely who qualified, whether it was automatic or available in every region, or what happened when it ended. It is not safe to assume a bonus issued in late 2023 is still active in 2026.
Search the email account associated with Microsoft for phrases such as “OneDrive storage,” “photo storage,” “album,” and “storage bonus.” If your account is currently over quota, rely on the storage status shown in that account and current Microsoft support or billing information—not on an assumption that the historical bonus remains.

How to check your OneDrive before making changes
- Note the current quota. Open OneDrive on the web and check the account’s storage indicator. Also check the Microsoft account’s subscription and storage page.
- Review what is using space. Compare the reported usage with large photo, video, and other file folders. Look for actual duplicate files rather than relying on repeated album appearances.
- Inspect albums. Review the Photos or Gallery area and identify albums or memberships you no longer need. The exact menu names may vary by app and account.
- Check the recycle bin. Deleted files may remain recoverable and may not free quota until they are removed from the recycle bin; confirm the effect in your account before emptying it.
- Look for Microsoft notices. Search account email for the terms above, especially if you remember receiving a storage bonus or warning.
- Recheck after cleanup. Storage figures may take time to update. Confirm the quota has changed before relying on the freed space.
These are practical audit suggestions, not a Microsoft-published fix for the historical album accounting change. The available evidence does not give a verified cleanup procedure or say that removing album memberships will necessarily reduce quota.
Be careful not to delete the original photo
An album is a way to organize or present photos; an album appearance is not, by itself, proof that a second full-size file exists. If you want to stop using an album, remove the photo from that album rather than deleting the original file from OneDrive. Before deleting any original, make sure you have another safe copy and understand how deletion will affect synced devices and offline access.

If you do find genuine duplicate files, compare names, dates, sizes, and contents before removing one. Back up important originals first. If you use camera-roll backup, confirm that the photo is safely stored in the cloud before deleting a local phone copy.

First decide whether you need more capacity or simply have files you no longer need in OneDrive. Remove unnecessary large files, redundant originals, or old videos; review synced and shared folders; and check the recycle bin. Stopping album use may avoid the reported trigger, but it may not undo any storage accounting that has already occurred.

Should you move your photos elsewhere?
A dedicated photo service may suit someone who values photo discovery and library tools more than using OneDrive as general file storage. Google One and Google Photos may appeal to users already invested in Google services; iCloud+ is a natural option for people who organize their library in Apple Photos across Apple devices. Compare current prices, storage terms, and platform support directly before switching.
Migration takes effort: you may need to move originals, preserve dates and other metadata, identify duplicates, and account for video storage and future subscription costs. Keep a separate copy of important files until you have verified the new library. Do not switch solely on the assumption that OneDrive’s historical policy still causes a particular charge on your account.
What remains uncertain
The original report does not answer how many quota units one photo in one or several albums consumes, whether shared-album participants are affected, whether thumbnails or full-resolution copies are counted, or whether removing an album entry frees space. It also does not verify the current 2026 treatment, the end or extension of bonuses, or coverage across business, education, and regional accounts. For those questions, use the storage details and notices in your own Microsoft account, and consult Microsoft support if the displayed usage does not make sense.
