Short version: Newegg briefly replied “Yeah, tariffs” when asked why GeForce RTX 5080 prices had risen, according to contemporary reporting. The retailer also reportedly said its Blackwell cards came from China. Both social-media replies were later deleted. That makes tariffs a plausible contributor, not a documented explanation for every increase: launch shortages, board-partner pricing, marketplace sellers, demand and reseller markups also mattered.
The launch-price baseline
NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 on January 6, 2025, with both cards scheduled to go on sale January 30. NVIDIA’s U.S. starting prices were $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080 (NVIDIA announcement). Those were starting prices, generally associated with reference or Founders Edition-level products—not a promise that every factory-overclocked or premium add-in-board model would sell for the same amount.

What Newegg reportedly said
In early February 2025, after buyers noticed higher RTX 5080 prices, a user asked Newegg on X whether tariffs were responsible. Newegg reportedly answered, “Yeah, tariffs.” Contemporary reports also said the retailer stated that its Blackwell GPUs came from China. The replies were subsequently removed (Tom’s Hardware; HotHardware).

That distinction matters. This was a deleted social-media exchange, not a published tariff schedule, cost breakdown or formal statement identifying the duty paid on each model. Newegg’s later handling of the posts complicated the original explanation. There is no public Newegg document showing an import value, tariff classification, duty rate and exact amount passed through to a particular RTX 5090 or RTX 5080.

How much did prices rise?
Reported examples were model-specific. A Gigabyte Aorus Master RTX 5080 was cited as moving from $1,299.99 to $1,479.99. The arithmetic is:
($1,479.99 − $1,299.99) ÷ $1,299.99 × 100 ≈ 13.8%

Reports also described roughly 10% increases on some ASUS RTX 5090 models. Other RTX 5090 cards were already far above NVIDIA’s $1,999 reference price because supply was exceptionally limited and premium designs commanded more. For example, a documented $2,799.99 listing would be about 40.1% above the $1,999 starting price—but that comparison does not prove that 40.1% was a tariff charge.

How tariffs could affect a graphics card
A tariff is generally collected on imported goods at the border and paid by the importer of record. Depending on contracts and market conditions, the importer, distributor, manufacturer or retailer can absorb that cost, pass some of it on, or reprice inventory in anticipation of higher replacement costs.

A retailer may therefore raise a price before newly tariffed inventory arrives if it expects its next shipment to cost more. The final shelf price can also include freight, insurance, distributor margins, foreign-exchange changes, inventory risk and expected future policy—not just the duty itself.
Newegg’s later regulatory filing discusses tariff uncertainty and the possibility that tariffs could raise costs for products and supply-chain components (SEC-hosted filing). That supports tariffs as a genuine business risk. It still does not establish the tariff amount embedded in any individual GPU listing.

Why tariffs were not the whole explanation
Severe launch scarcity
Both cards were difficult to find immediately after launch. When supply is thin and demand is strong, premium cards and third-party sellers can charge more independently of import duties. Scarcity is particularly important when comparing a $1,999 starting price with a premium RTX 5090 that has a larger cooler, higher power limit or factory overclock.
Board-partner pricing
ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and other add-in-board manufacturers set prices for their own designs. A more elaborate cooler, reinforced power delivery, white finish, bundled software or factory overclock can raise the price without the entire difference being attributable to tariffs.

Marketplace sellers and intermediaries
Newegg lists products sold directly by Newegg as well as third-party marketplace merchants. Seller margin, fulfillment, warranty handling and inventory position can produce materially different prices for the same GPU family. Always check the “Sold by” field and the exact SKU before comparing offers (Newegg GPU category).
Demand and expectations
The RTX 5090 launched as NVIDIA’s flagship consumer GPU, while the RTX 5080 targeted high-end 4K gaming. Strong willingness to pay can lift prices. Retailers may also price around expected future tariff changes rather than duties already paid; that is an economic inference, not a documented Newegg calculation.

If a specific card was already in U.S. inventory before a tariff took effect, that unit may not have incurred the new duty. A retailer could still reprice it because replacement inventory is expected to cost more, but that is different from saying the tariff had already been paid on the card in the warehouse. Without customs-entry or inventory data, the timing cannot be determined for each listing.

Newegg listings observed in an August 2026 market snapshot included a Gigabyte RTX 5090 at $3,899.99 and an MSI RTX 5080 at $1,695.99 (Newegg promotion page). These are model- and seller-specific prices that can change quickly; they should not be treated as universal Newegg prices or as proof that tariffs caused the February 2025 increases. NVIDIA’s own RTX 5080 marketplace showed a $999 reference listing that was marked out of stock when crawled (NVIDIA marketplace).
How to evaluate an RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 listing
- Match the exact SKU. Compare the same board-partner model, memory configuration and cooler—not just “RTX 5090” or “RTX 5080.”
- Identify the seller. Confirm whether it is sold by Newegg, NVIDIA, the manufacturer or a marketplace merchant.
- Check condition and protection. Verify new, open-box or refurbished status, warranty coverage and return terms.
- Use the right reference price. Treat $1,999 and $999 as NVIDIA launch starting points, not guaranteed prices for every premium card.
- Include the full cost. Add shipping and sales tax, and check whether bundles contain products you actually need.
- Verify stock language. “Add to cart” does not guarantee durable availability or immediate fulfillment.
- Compare alternatives. A prebuilt, previous-generation card, another GPU tier or a protected used-market purchase may offer better value than a heavily marked-up standalone card.
Common mistakes when discussing the price hikes
- Calling every price above MSRP a tariff surcharge.
- Treating a deleted reply as a formal corporate cost breakdown.
- Assuming every RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 was made in the same country.
- Assuming a 10% tariff must create exactly a 10% retail increase.
- Comparing a Founders Edition reference price with a premium factory-overclocked model without labeling the difference.
- Using a 2026 listing to prove what caused a February 2025 change.
- Failing to separate Newegg’s own inventory from marketplace inventory.
Bottom line
Newegg did briefly point to tariffs in a reply that was later deleted, and its filings acknowledge tariff-related supply-chain risk. But the public evidence does not quantify a tariff charge for any particular RTX 5090 or RTX 5080, nor show that tariffs alone caused the price increases. The January 2025 launch shortage, board-partner tiers, demand, marketplace sellers and intermediary markups were substantial competing explanations. Treat current prices as volatile, seller-specific offers—not as proof of the original tariff claim.
