On March 1, 2019, Newark element14 adopted the name Newark, An Avnet Company, while Europe’s Farnell element14 became Farnell, An Avnet Company. The announcement made Avnet’s ownership more visible; it was a brand change, not a newly announced merger or a notice that customers had to move to a different distributor.

The change took effect on March 1, 2019, according to Electronic Design’s report and Control Design’s coverage. It is easy to misread headlines focused on Newark as a global name change, but Farnell changed its European branding at the same time, and Asia-Pacific was described separately.
Why Avnet changed the branding
Avnet acquired Premier Farnell in 2016. In 2019, the group presented the Newark and Farnell names more explicitly as part of Avnet, aiming to make the relationship clearer to customers and suppliers. The company’s stated rationale also included a more unified proposition spanning product development, procurement, fulfillment, and supply-chain support, so customers would not need to identify a different partner at each stage.
Those were strategic aims, not proof that the rebrand itself reduced costs or changed service performance. The announcement described a corporate identity and positioning change; it did not announce that a new operating merger was taking place on March 1.

How the names got there
Newark’s history predates element14 by decades: it was established in 1934. The company later became part of the broader Premier Farnell organization. Beginning around 2008, Premier Farnell used the element14 brand across its distribution operations. After Avnet acquired Premier Farnell in 2016, the 2019 move put the established Newark and Farnell names back in the foreground, now paired with Avnet. What it meant for customers
The announcement coverage presents the change as a rebrand, not a product-catalog or customer-account migration. It does not identify a requirement to create a new account, change credentials, replace part numbers, or switch suppliers. Accordingly, no customer action was identified in the coverage—but that is not a guarantee about every legal entity, invoice, tax registration, website address, or account system. Those details can depend on region and transaction, so customers with an active procurement question should check the applicable current regional site or their own account and purchasing documents.

The same distinction applies to suppliers. Avnet’s stated goal was a more cohesive relationship across its distribution and supply-chain businesses. The reports do not establish that supplier contracts, pricing, reseller agreements, or logistics terms automatically changed.

What the rebrand did—and did not—mean
- Newark was not discontinued. The Newark name became the main customer-facing identity again, with the Avnet designation.
- Farnell was not absorbed into Newark worldwide. Farnell received its own Avnet-linked name in Europe.
- element14 did not vanish globally. The cited regional description said Asia-Pacific continued trading as element14; coverage also described element14 as an engineering community and digital identity.
- The announcement does not prove universal operational changes. It does not by itself establish changes to contracts, prices, accounts, order procedures, or legal entities.
For readers searching this announcement today, the key point is its date: this was a 2019 branding update, not a new 2026 change. Regional names and current operational details may evolve, so verify current terms with the relevant regional distributor before making purchasing or compliance decisions.
