Newark Electronics began in 1934 as a radio-parts business. Today it is the Americas brand in Avnet’s broader electronics-distribution business, supplying components, development platforms, industrial products, and procurement tools. Its history tracks a larger shift: distributors moved from helping customers find parts in printed catalogs to supporting digital purchasing and, increasingly, the path from prototype to production.
What Newark Electronics is today

Why catalogs mattered
A distributor’s catalog did more than list goods. It connected product discovery to technical identification and purchasing: a customer could locate a component, compare available options, and place an order through one channel. Premier Farnell, 1996
In 1996, Farnell purchased Premier Electronics, creating the Premier Farnell structure that included Newark Electronics, MCM, and Akron Brass. Newark remained a recognizable brand, but it was now part of a larger multi-brand distribution portfolio. Avnet, 2016
Avnet acquired Premier Farnell in 2016 through Avnet Bidco Limited, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary, and Premier Farnell was delisted from the London Stock Exchange. Newark’s own explanation presents the combination as a way to serve customers from prototype through production, manufacturing, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO). The potential strategic advantage is access to a wider distribution and engineering ecosystem; the trade-off is that Newark-specific performance can be difficult to separate from the larger group’s results. Available company materials do not establish whether the acquisition improved prices, delivery, availability, or customer satisfaction. Regional brand architecture
The wider group’s brand structure reflects regional operations rather than the disappearance of Newark. The heritage timeline records a 2019 rebrand from Newark element14 to Newark, an Avnet company. That was a change in brand presentation, not evidence of a newly formed independent Newark business.
From printed catalogs to digital procurement
Digital tools altered more than the storefront. Online search and filtering made large catalogs easier to navigate; stock visibility, BOM purchasing, quotes, and approval workflows made parts buying more compatible with engineering and corporate procurement. The group’s heritage timeline records eProcurement capabilities in the 1990s and the 2008 launch of iBuy, described as a tool for purchasing and budget visibility.

Newark’s current site lists Quick Buy, BOM Upload, Request a Quote, and order-approval workflows. These features are especially relevant to teams buying repeatedly or managing a bill of materials; they are less central to a one-off order by an individual hobbyist. The company also offers technical articles, white papers, videos, tutorials, and training material. Such resources can support product discovery, but company-produced content is not an independent product evaluation.

The Farnell timeline records the launch of the element14 Community in 2009 and Raspberry Pi’s launch in 2012 as milestones in the broader group’s history. These developments widened the distributor audience beyond established industrial buyers to include students, makers, educators, software developers, and startups working with development boards and embedded systems. They do not mean Newark alone created or drove Raspberry Pi’s success.
Newark’s current assortment and publications include development kits, single-board computers, sensors, reference designs, test equipment, and edge-AI platforms. Its edge-focused publication names suppliers such as AMD, Analog Devices, STMicroelectronics, NXP, Microchip, Infineon, Renesas, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino. The publication shows the company’s present product and engineering-content emphasis; it is a supplier-facing resource, not a neutral comparison of those products.

Newark’s authorized-distributor policy says it normally sources from original manufacturers or authorized distributors and maintains documented distribution agreements. The policy, dated February 20, 2021, describes a narrow exception requiring senior approval and written customer consent for non-authorized sourcing. That can matter when authenticity and traceability are important, particularly for production or safety-sensitive designs. How to decide whether Newark fits a project
There is no universal best distributor. Compare the exact part, quantity, packaging, destination, and timing rather than relying on brand reputation alone.
- Check the exact stock position. A catalog listing or global stock claim does not guarantee local warehouse availability or immediate shipment.
- Compare landed cost. Include unit price, packaging format, minimum order, shipping, taxes, duties, and any account-specific terms.
- Match packaging to use. Cut tape, reels, tubes, or trays can affect cost, handling, and suitability for automated assembly.
- Confirm lifecycle and lead time. A searchable product is not a guarantee of long-term availability or manufacturer-backed longevity.
- Assess sourcing needs. For high-risk parts, check authorization, traceability, packaging, and date codes; independent brokers may help with obsolete or allocated items but require greater diligence.
- Use workflow tools where they help. BOM upload, quoting, and approvals are useful for repeat business purchasing, while a small personal order may be better judged on total cost and convenience.
Newark may suit buyers who want authorized components, electronic and industrial supplies in one channel, procurement tools, or a route from prototype toward production and MRO. It may not be the best choice when another distributor has the exact item at a better landed cost, when shipping dominates a very small order, or when an obsolete component requires a broker.
Comparing Newark with other distributors
DigiKey, Mouser, Arrow, RS, TTI, and independent brokers serve overlapping but not identical purchasing needs. The categories below are useful starting points, not verified rankings of price, fill rate, delivery speed, or service quality.
