Netflix is not buying HBO Max. Netflix proposed acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max, HBO and film-and-television studios in December 2025, and argued that a combined offering could cost less than two separate subscriptions. Warner Bros. Discovery terminated that agreement on February 27, 2026. No Netflix–HBO Max bundle exists, and no bundle price was ever announced.
What Netflix actually proposed
The original transaction covered Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and studios businesses: HBO Max, HBO, and Warner Bros. film and television studios. Netflix’s announcement described an enterprise value of approximately $82.7 billion and an equity value of about $72 billion. This was not necessarily a purchase of every Warner Bros. Discovery business. The company had planned to separate its Global Linear Networks business, referred to as Discovery Global, from the streaming-and-studios assets covered by Netflix’s proposal.

Netflix’s argument was about a possible bundle discount: customers could buy Netflix and HBO Max together for less than the two standalone plans. That was presented during merger discussions as a potential consumer benefit, including in the regulatory debate over Netflix acquiring a major streaming competitor. A bundle discount is different from a permanent price cut, a single merged app or guaranteed savings for every household. The companies did not announce a final product name, monthly price, launch date, billing system or promise that existing subscribers would pay less.
Why a cheaper bundle was never guaranteed

- One higher-priced premium service with a larger catalog.
- Separate services with optional bundling.
- An introductory discount followed by higher regular pricing.
Your actual spending would also depend on whether you canceled duplicate subscriptions, chose ad-supported or ad-free plans, used annual billing, and needed features such as 4K video, downloads, simultaneous streams, household sharing, sports or live television. A bundle can reduce the combined price while still costing more than keeping only the one service you use most.

What happened to Netflix’s offer

What the Paramount transaction means for HBO Max
As of August 16–18, 2026, HBO Max’s proposed corporate future is tied to Paramount Skydance, not Netflix. The Paramount transaction had shareholder approval and the Justice Department’s investigation had closed, but the closing remained delayed by litigation.
Paramount has not established a final consumer structure for HBO Max and Paramount+. They could remain separate, offer an optional bundle or eventually become one product. Any such arrangement, including its price, billing terms, branding and catalog access, remains unconfirmed until Paramount publishes definitive terms. The Justice Department’s statement discussed possible effects in streaming video, linear television and film production and distribution; it did not announce a consumer bundle price or require a particular product design.

What subscribers should do now
- Do not change services because of the old headline. Netflix’s proposal is no longer active, and accounts were never automatically combined.
- Check each bill separately. Review your current plan, renewal date, taxes and any promotional expiration in the official Netflix and Max account pages.
- Compare what you actually watch. Consider ad-supported versus ad-free tiers, annual versus monthly billing, downloads, 4K access, simultaneous streams, household rules, sports and regional availability.
- Cancel unused subscriptions. Waiting for a hypothetical merger discount is not a savings strategy. If you rarely use a service, cancel it or switch to a less expensive available tier through the provider’s official site.
- Recheck any future Paramount announcement carefully. A new bundle may have temporary pricing, different content rights or new account terms. Do not assume it preserves today’s price or features.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the proposal a completed acquisition.
- Confusing HBO Max with all of Warner Bros. Discovery.
- Treating a potential bundle discount as a guaranteed reduction in every subscriber’s bill.
- Using the original $82.7 billion valuation as though it describes Paramount’s later proposal.
- Saying Netflix owns HBO or that Netflix and HBO Max accounts have merged.
- Publishing an exact bundle price without an official announcement.
- Ignoring the litigation that delayed Paramount’s closing.
Bottom line
The headline was based on a genuine December 2025 proposal, but it is no longer current. Netflix abandoned its bid in February 2026, so there is no Netflix–HBO Max bundle to join and no announced discount to claim. HBO Max’s proposed owner is Paramount Skydance, whose transaction was still delayed by litigation in late July 2026. Base your subscription choices on what you use and pay today, not on the canceled Netflix promise.
