Yes—Apple says a majority of iPhones sold in the United States now have India as their country of origin. But that does not mean most iPhones worldwide are made in India, or that China has disappeared from Apple’s supply chain.
The shift accelerated during the 2025 US tariff confrontation with China. It built on a longer-running effort by Apple and its suppliers to diversify production, with India becoming an increasingly important final-assembly and export base.
What the headline really means
“Most US iPhones are now made in India” is broadly accurate only if it is read carefully. The claim refers to iPhones sold in the US and their declared country of origin. Apple does not publish a complete, current percentage breakdown of US iPhone sales by assembly country, so “most” should be attributed to Apple rather than treated as a precise independently audited figure.
It does not mean:
- Most iPhones sold worldwide are assembled in India.
- Every iPhone sold in the US comes from India.
- Every component in an India-origin iPhone was made in India.
- Apple operates all the factories itself.
In practical terms, India is primarily becoming a major final-assembly and export location. The iPhone is designed by Apple, assembled by contract manufacturers, and built from components sourced through a multinational supply chain.

What Apple has said
On its fiscal second-quarter 2025 earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company expected the majority of iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter to have India as their country of origin. In later remarks reported in Apple’s fiscal third-quarter 2025 earnings-call transcript, Apple said most US-sold iPhones continued to originate from India, while many other markets remained primarily supplied from China.
That is stronger evidence than an early production target, but it still does not establish that 100% of US iPhones—or every iPhone model—comes from India. Inventory, model, factory allocation and quarter can all affect the mix.
India’s global share is much smaller
The most important correction is the difference between the US market and Apple’s worldwide production.

That represented roughly one-quarter of Apple’s global iPhone assembly, based on estimates from people familiar with production. Apple’s total annual iPhone production was estimated at approximately 220 million to 230 million units.

So the accurate summary is: India now supplies most iPhones for the US market, but China remains essential to Apple’s global iPhone operation.

How tariffs accelerated the move
Apple had reasons to expand in India before the 2025 tariff conflict. China concentration created exposure to factory disruptions, geopolitical tension and logistics problems. India also offered production incentives, a growing electronics-export ecosystem and a potential second major manufacturing hub.

- A China-origin iPhone can be exposed to additional US duties associated with China trade policy.
- Final assembly in India can give a device India as its declared country of origin, subject to applicable trade rules.
- Apple can then direct more India-origin units specifically to the US market.
- The company may accept higher manufacturing costs in exchange for reduced exposure to China-related tariff risk.
In an April 2025 report carried by Yahoo Finance, Reuters said Apple was working with Foxconn and Tata to make most US-bound iPhones in India by the end of 2026. The report said roughly 80% of iPhones sold in the US had previously been made in China. Those figures were estimates from reporting and sources, not a complete Apple production disclosure.
Tariffs were therefore an accelerant, not necessarily the sole cause. Apple’s longer-term diversification strategy was already underway.
India is not necessarily the cheaper option
Moving production does not automatically reduce costs. Reuters reporting estimated that manufacturing iPhones in India was about 5% to 8% more expensive than in China, with the difference reaching approximately 10% in some cases.

That estimate does not mean retail iPhones must become 5% to 10% more expensive. Apple could absorb some of the difference, change logistics, adjust the production mix or alter prices for reasons unrelated to assembly location. Nor does it prove that India-made iPhones are lower quality.

The economic calculation is broader than factory wages. Apple is weighing assembly costs against tariff exposure, supply-chain resilience, geopolitical flexibility and the value of maintaining production capacity outside China.
Who assembles iPhones in India?
“Apple makes iPhones in India” generally means that Apple-designed devices are assembled by contract manufacturers.
- Foxconn operates major facilities in Tamil Nadu and has expanded iPhone production there.
- Tata Electronics acquired Wistron’s India iPhone business and is expanding its manufacturing role.
- Additional Indian facilities and capacity have been developed or were under construction as suppliers scaled production.
Reuters-based reporting published by India Today described Foxconn and Tata as central to the expansion. Apple remains responsible for product design, specifications, software and supply-chain coordination, while suppliers perform much of the physical manufacturing and assembly.
“Made in India” does not mean every part came from India
Country of origin usually identifies where enough manufacturing or transformation occurred to assign the finished product its origin under applicable customs rules. It is not a parts passport.

An India-origin iPhone can still contain components or subassemblies made in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, the United States and other locations. Semiconductors, displays, camera components, batteries, mechanical parts and other inputs move through a global supplier network before final assembly and export.
It is also useful to distinguish these terms:
- Final assembly: The stage where the device is put together and tested as a finished product.
- Country of origin: The country assigned under trade and customs rules for the finished device.
- Component origin: Where individual parts were manufactured.
- Designed by Apple in California: A design and engineering statement, not a claim that the phone was assembled in the US.
What this means for US buyers
Quality
There is no reason to assume an India-assembled iPhone provides a different everyday experience solely because of its assembly location. Apple’s specifications and manufacturing controls apply across its supplier network. Country of final assembly alone is not evidence of inferior quality.
Price
The shift does not establish that US iPhones will become cheaper or more expensive. Factory cost is only one part of retail pricing, and tariff treatment can change. Do not assume that avoiding China-related duties automatically produces a discount, or that higher Indian assembly costs automatically appear dollar-for-dollar at checkout.
Availability
Production allocation can vary by model, season and factory. Some US inventory may still be China-origin, particularly when older stock is being sold or when a specific model is allocated differently. Buyers generally cannot choose an assembly country when ordering an iPhone.

Warranty and service normally depend more on the sales region, model number and applicable Apple policies than on whether final assembly occurred in India or China. Regional differences in cellular bands, SIM configuration or service eligibility can matter more than the assembly label, especially when importing a phone.

Why Apple has not simply moved everything to the US
Complete US iPhone assembly would face substantial practical obstacles:
- Higher labor and operating costs.
- Limited domestic infrastructure for assembling tens of millions of smartphones.
- A smaller local supplier ecosystem for the complete iPhone bill of materials.
- Continued dependence on imported components even if final assembly moved domestically.
- The difficulty of scaling factories and trained labor quickly enough for global product launches.
Apple has made US investments in areas such as chips, materials, components and advanced manufacturing. Those investments are not the same as relocating complete iPhone assembly to the United States. Political pressure may encourage more domestic production, but a policy demand is not evidence of a near-term US iPhone factory plan.
Has Apple left China?
No. China still offers a dense supplier network, experienced manufacturing labor, tooling expertise and enormous final-assembly capacity. It also continues to support production for non-US markets and may remain important during high-volume launches.
The better description is market-specific diversification. Apple is directing more India-assembled iPhones to the US while preserving substantial Chinese capacity for the rest of its worldwide operation. A single month of exports, or shipments from one supplier, cannot establish the entire annual global production mix.
Is the India shift permanent?
Parts of it are likely to endure because Apple and its suppliers have invested in Indian factories, skills and export infrastructure. Reducing dependence on one country also has strategic value even when tariffs are not the immediate issue.
But production allocation is not fixed. It could change if:
- US tariff policy changes.
- India faces new duties or trade restrictions.
- China-related tariffs are reduced.
- Factory yields, labor costs or logistics differ from expectations.
- Apple reallocates production by model, season or destination market.
- Future trade rules focus more heavily on components rather than final assembly.
Apple’s statements support the conclusion that a majority of US-sold iPhones originated in India during particular quarters. They do not justify a precise current percentage or a claim that India has replaced China globally.
