By spring 2026, Fast Company reported that Elon Musk was the only xAI cofounder still at the company. That reported exodus unfolded as Grok faced scrutiny over sexualized images of real people and images appearing to depict minors. But the public record does not establish that the controversy caused the founders to leave.
The distinction matters: the departures are evidence of significant leadership turnover, not proof of a single cause. Some exits predated the imagery controversy; others were described as career moves or occurred amid a company reorganization. The documented timeline is clearer than the reasons behind it.
What “cofounders fleeing” means—and what it does not
xAI was founded in 2023 by Musk and a group of AI researchers. TechCrunch described the founding team as 12 people and reported that six had left by February 10, 2026. Later, Fast Company reported that every cofounder other than Musk had exited. Those are media-reported counts, not an official, current roster published by xAI.

Nor should departures by engineers or other employees be counted as cofounder exits. The available reporting does not support treating every departure as a voluntary resignation—or every exit as a protest over Grok.

These milestones do not amount to one clean wave. Some exits occurred before the imagery controversy; the later ones overlapped with scrutiny, restructuring and changes in company priorities. A separate report from The Information described more than 50 researchers and engineers leaving after the SpaceX acquisition through a mix of layoffs, firings and voluntary departures. Fast Company reported more than 80 departures across a different group and period. The figures describe different populations and must not be added together.
What the Grok controversy involved
Grok was accused of generating sexually explicit manipulated images of real people, including public figures. Reports also described images that appeared to depict minors. The issue involved Grok both as a standalone service and through its integration with X, where users could encounter, post or circulate material.
Terms matter here. Non-consensual intimate imagery describes sexual imagery shared or created without a person’s consent, often involving adults. An explicit synthetic image is not automatically legally classified as child sexual abuse material (CSAM); classification depends on the image and the applicable law. Unless an authority has made a definitive classification, it is more accurate to refer to images appearing to depict minors or alleged AI-generated CSAM.
Generation, hosting, distribution, reposting and failure to remove material are distinct actions. Evidence that material appeared on a service does not by itself establish who generated it, how it circulated, what controls applied at the time or whether a particular legal violation occurred.

What regulators said—and what safeguards remain unclear
California’s January 16 letter
California Attorney General Rob Bonta sent xAI and X a letter addressing explicit material produced using Grok and concerns related to CSAM. The letter demanded action; it was not a court ruling or a final finding that the companies had violated the law. Read the letter itself for the state’s claims and requests.
Canada’s privacy investigation
Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner said it initiated complaints on January 15, 2026, concerning X Corp. and xAI under the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). Its findings say CSAM and non-consensual intimate imagery had been present on the services, while declining to endorse a precise volume estimate. The regulator also identified shortcomings or delays in handling privacy-impact assessments and noted difficulty obtaining a reliable breakdown for standalone Grok. Those conclusions provide a more formal record than online allegations alone, but they should not be stretched into claims the regulator did not make. The findings are available from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Safeguards and their limits
X reportedly said it had introduced safeguards against generating CSAM-like material. That statement does not establish how effective the safeguards were, when they became active, or whether they applied consistently across Grok on X, the standalone website, mobile apps, paid accounts and APIs. Nor does a claim about blocking generation answer whether distribution, search, uploads or reposts were controlled. The supplied regulatory record does not settle those scope-and-timing questions.
Did the controversy cause the founders to leave?
The best-supported answer is: it may have contributed to the environment in which later departures occurred, but direct causation has not been demonstrated. It helps to separate three levels of evidence:

- Documented: A founder publicly gives a reason for leaving. The cited reporting does not identify a departing founder who said they left because of the CSAM controversy.
- Reported: A news outlet attributes an internal explanation to sources, such as dissatisfaction with a product direction or changes in organizational priorities. Such accounts should be attributed and should not be treated as a universal explanation.
- Inferred: Departures occur during a safety controversy, making a connection plausible. Timing alone cannot establish motive.
There are reasons the controversy could have mattered. Product decisions, moderation controls, model behavior and deployment pace can create friction among research, engineering and leadership teams. The exodus overlapped with criticism of Grok and regulatory scrutiny, so questions about internal safety escalation and executive oversight are legitimate.
There are also strong reasons not to claim the scandal drove the whole exodus. Some departures predated the controversy; reported reasons included new ventures, health issues and ordinary career transitions; and Musk described a reorganization and differences in organizational fit. The available reporting does not show which founders objected to which safety or product decisions, or whether compensation, management, strategy or other factors mattered more.
A lawsuit reported in June 2026 alleges that xAI fired an engineer who raised concerns about Grok safety. That allegation could be relevant context for assessing how safety dissent was handled, but it is not an adjudicated finding and does not establish why a cofounder left. What losing the founding team could mean for xAI
Founders often carry institutional knowledge: why a system was built a certain way, which research bets were tried, and how technical trade-offs were made. Losing many of them can make it harder to preserve continuity across pretraining, reasoning, coding, multimodal work and safety. It can also leave more decisions concentrated among a smaller group of leaders, increasing the importance of clear accountability and reliable channels for escalating risk.

That does not prove xAI’s research has stopped or that the company is failing. New leaders may be better suited to managing a larger organization, while departing founders may take valuable experience with them. The practical question is whether xAI can retain the teams and decision-making processes needed to build, evaluate and govern its products—not simply how many founders remain.
There are reasons the company may remain formidable. xAI announced a $20 billion Series E financing round on January 6, 2026, a company-reported figure, and described expansion of its compute infrastructure and model program. Funding and compute can support hiring and product development, but they do not substitute for experienced leadership, a stable research strategy or effective safety oversight. The wider corporate structure also shifted: reporting described a SpaceX acquisition or merger and subsequent restructuring. Because the available accounts use changing labels and do not establish every legal or governance detail, it is safer not to treat “xAI,” “SpaceXAI,” X and Grok as interchangeable names for one entity. The practical implications for reporting lines, authority and incentives depend on the exact transaction and organizational arrangements in force at a given time.

- Whether any cofounder resigned specifically over Grok’s image-generation safeguards.
- Which departures were voluntary, which resulted from restructuring or dismissal, and whether those circumstances differed by person.
- What safeguards were active on each Grok product surface when the images circulated, and how consistently they blocked generation or distribution.
- Whether xAI’s post-founder leadership has changed its safety oversight, escalation process or willingness to slow deployment.
- How the corporate restructuring changed decision-making authority and employee incentives.
Those questions require evidence beyond the fact that departures and a public-safety controversy occurred during the same broad period. For now, the defensible conclusion is narrower: xAI lost most or all of its original non-Musk founding team, according to media reports, while Grok faced serious scrutiny; the public record does not prove that the controversy directly drove each departure.
