Money in Excel launched in the United States on June 15, 2020, as a Microsoft 365 Personal and Family feature. It combined an Excel template and add-in with Plaid account connections to import supported bank, card, investment and loan data. Microsoft’s announcement now says support ended on June 30, 2023, so the headline “Money in Excel goes public” describes a historical launch—not a service you can newly activate in 2026.

What Microsoft launched

Money in Excel was a spreadsheet-based personal-finance tool, not a revival of Microsoft Money, the older standalone finance program. Microsoft presented it as a way to bring financial accounts into a workbook, then use Excel tables, categories, charts and summaries to analyze household money.

The launch announcement appeared on June 15, 2020. Contemporary coverage of the public release followed on June 18, 2020, including Office Watch’s launch review. Microsoft described the feature for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in the United States.

How Money in Excel worked

The historical setup flow

  1. Download the Money in Excel template.
  2. Open it in Excel and sign in with the Microsoft 365 account associated with the subscription.
  3. Use the setup pane, commonly called the Money Pane, to choose financial institutions and accounts.
  4. Authenticate the connection through Plaid.
  5. Refresh the workbook to bring in account information and transactions.
  6. Review categories and the Snapshot sheet, then save a working copy rather than treating the downloaded template as the only file.

These are historical steps. Because Microsoft ended support, readers should not expect the connection, add-in or refresh controls to work as a maintained service today.

What the workbook displayed

Microsoft said the service could import balances and transaction history from supported bank accounts, credit cards, investments and loans. The workbook could organize spending by category and show month-to-month trends, recurring expenses, large purchases, subscription-fee changes, and bank or overdraft charges. Users could also create custom categories, charts and tables using ordinary Excel features.

What it could—and could not—replace

Money in Excel could do It was not a reliable replacement for
Import data from participating connected accounts Full accounting, reconciliation or professional financial reporting
Classify transactions and summarize spending Perfect automatic categorization
Show trends, recurring charges and snapshot metrics A guaranteed-current ledger or complete net-worth record
Support custom Excel formulas, charts and tables A permanently maintained bank-aggregation service
Accept manually entered transactions Automatic balances and updates without a working account connection

Transfers between accounts and credit-card payments still required judgment. A payment could be counted as spending if categorized incorrectly, and imported records still needed checking for duplicates, missing transactions and stale balances. A dashboard is not automatically a reconciled accounting book.

Who could use it at launch

  • Subscription: Microsoft 365 Personal or Family was required; it was not a separate universally free banking app.
  • Region: the launch was focused on the United States.
  • Computers and browser: launch-era descriptions covered Excel for Windows and Mac desktop and Excel Online.
  • Mobile: Excel mobile apps could view and edit the workbook, but did not provide the same transaction-update and Money Pane functions.
  • Institutions: connectivity depended on Plaid and participating financial institutions, so a U.S. bank or credit union was not automatically supported.

These describe the 2020 product, not current eligibility rules.

Plaid, permissions and privacy

Plaid supplied the account-connection layer. Microsoft said that, after permission was granted, Plaid could access balances, transaction history and associated account information such as the account owner’s name and address. Microsoft also said Plaid would not receive the Microsoft 365 subscription login and would not share financial-institution login credentials with Microsoft.

That division did not make the arrangement risk-free. Plaid handled financial data under its own policies, institutions used different authentication experiences, and a linked account did not guarantee complete or current data. Anyone evaluating a surviving connection should review Plaid’s current privacy and data-management terms separately rather than relying only on the 2020 description.

Security precautions for the workbook

A Money in Excel file could contain account identifiers, balances, transaction descriptions and information about a household’s spending. The following safeguards applied then and remain sensible for any finance spreadsheet:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a strong Microsoft account password and multifactor authentication.
  • Keep the file in a trusted, access-controlled location.
  • Use file-level encryption or password protection where appropriate. Worksheet or cell protection alone is not the same as encrypting the file.
  • Do not email unprotected copies or leave them in shared folders without checking permissions.
  • Delete old exports, downloaded statements and duplicate copies that are no longer needed.
  • Inspect a workbook before sharing it; hidden sheets, account numbers and transaction history may still be present.

Why Money in Excel is no longer available

Microsoft updated its launch article with a decisive notice: “Effective June 30, 2023, Money in Excel will no longer be supported.” New users should therefore not expect Microsoft to maintain the add-in, provide account aggregation or deliver automatic transaction refresh.

An old workbook may still open as an ordinary Excel file. Its formulas, tables, categories and manually maintained records can remain useful if they calculate correctly. That does not mean the Money in Excel service is operating. Do not enter current banking credentials into an old file or an unofficial template mirror, and do not rely on an unrefreshed balance for tax, budgeting or net-worth decisions.

If you find an old Money in Excel file

  1. Make a copy and preserve the original unchanged.
  2. Open the copy without accepting unexpected external-data refreshes or unfamiliar prompts.
  3. Check formulas, tables, categories and date ranges for calculation errors.
  4. Reconcile important records against statements before using them for decisions.
  5. Export historical information to a neutral format such as CSV or PDF.
  6. Redact account numbers and other sensitive fields before sharing.
  7. Move ongoing tracking to a currently supported workflow.

Practical replacements in 2026

No product is an official successor to Money in Excel. Choose based on whether spreadsheet control, automatic synchronization or budgeting behavior matters most.

Excel-first, manual workflow

Microsoft 365 remains useful for a normal budget workbook, downloaded CSV statements and custom analysis. A Power Query process can standardize recurring CSV imports, but duplicate detection, transfer handling and categorization remain your responsibility. This approach minimizes third-party account access while increasing maintenance work. See Microsoft 365.

Automatic aggregation and budgeting

Services such as Quicken Simplifi, Monarch Money and YNAB emphasize connected accounts, dashboards or active budgeting rather than a workbook-first workflow. Compare supported institutions, refresh frequency, exports, deletion policies, household access, subscription terms and support.

Structured finance and investing records

Quicken Classic offers a more structured personal-finance and investment environment, but it can be more complex than a basic spending spreadsheet. Plain Google Sheets is another manual option for users who prefer cloud spreadsheets and CSV imports.

Buying Microsoft 365 can provide Excel for these manual workflows; it does not restore Money in Excel’s discontinued bank-sync service.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a downloadable historical template with a supported online service.
  • Assuming every bank or credit union worked with Plaid.
  • Treating a failed connection as conclusive proof that an institution was incompatible.
  • Expecting mobile Excel to offer desktop-level refresh controls.
  • Counting transfers or credit-card payments as new spending.
  • Relying on stale imported balances after June 30, 2023.
  • Downloading a purported replacement template from an unofficial mirror.

The Bottom Line

Money in Excel was a useful 2020 experiment in bringing Plaid-connected financial data into Excel, but it is now discontinued. Treat old files as ordinary spreadsheets, protect the sensitive data they contain, and choose a supported manual or automated workflow for current finances.
