Mint Kids is a real wireless plan, but it is not new: Mint announced it on October 30, 2024. Its current entry offer is advertised as $15 per month, yet that is a prepaid monthly equivalent—not a standard monthly bill—and the plan does not appear to include built-in social-media monitoring or comprehensive parental controls. Parents should check the upfront cost, renewal price, coverage and phone settings before signing up.
What Mint Kids is—and what changed since launch
Mint Kids is a full-size Mint Mobile wireless line intended for a child. It includes unlimited talk and text with a selectable data allowance, so the child needs a compatible phone; the plan is not itself a child-safe handset, emergency-only service or cellular watch plan.
Mint announced the product on October 30, 2024. The launch announcement described unlimited talk and text with 5GB of data for $15 a month. Mint’s current Kids pages list 6GB, 17GB, 23GB and Unlimited options. In other words, the launch configuration and the current choices are not identical; check Mint’s current plan page before buying.
The $15 price means paying upfront
Mint advertises the entry offer as a $15 monthly equivalent, but the service is prepaid. The listed term payments are:

Taxes and fees are extra, so these are not necessarily the checkout total. Mint describes the offer as an introductory rate for the initial term; do not assume the line will renew at $15 per month. The renewal price depends on the plan and term available when the prepaid period ends. Before purchasing, review the current plan terms and set a reminder to check the renewal amount before the term expires.
A year at the advertised rate has the same monthly equivalent as the shorter options, but it requires $180 upfront and commits the family for longer. Consider Mint’s Kids plan help information and applicable cancellation or refund terms before prepaying.

What the wireless service includes
Mint says Kids lines use T-Mobile’s network. Whether that works well depends on coverage where the child actually goes—not just at home, but also at school, sports and common travel destinations. Check those places before moving an existing number.

For Unlimited customers, Mint says use above 50GB in a monthly cycle may lead to reduced speeds in congested locations for the rest of that cycle. “Unlimited” therefore should not be read as a promise of unlimited high-priority or unrestricted-speed data. Mint Kids is not a complete parental-control service
The distinction that matters most to parents is between a phone line and controls over what a child can do with a phone. Mint provides connectivity; its materials point parents toward tools such as Google Family Link and mention Bark as a more feature-rich alternative. The available Mint plan materials do not promise that the $15 line itself includes social-media or message monitoring, app approval, screen-time enforcement or content monitoring.
- App and screen-time limits: Set these in the phone’s operating-system controls, such as Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link, or use a separate service.
- Location sharing: Configure it through the phone’s operating system or an app; do not assume an ordinary carrier line supplies a family location service.
- Content and messaging oversight: Carrier account management is not the same as monitoring a child’s apps or messages. Check exactly what any third-party service monitors and how it works.
- Data use: Use the phone’s settings to manage mobile-data use and app downloads, and encourage Wi-Fi where appropriate.
For a young child, a smartphone line may create access to browsers, social networks and messaging unless the phone is configured first. A parent seeking a managed device or monitoring ecosystem should compare services built around those features rather than treating a low-cost SIM as a substitute.

Activation: a parent’s checklist
- Check coverage. Confirm T-Mobile service is suitable in the places the child regularly visits.
- Check the phone. Use a compatible unlocked phone or review the terms for a phone bought through Mint. Confirm compatibility and unlock status before starting a number transfer.
- Choose the data tier and payment term. Compare the child’s likely use with the current 6GB, 17GB, 23GB and Unlimited options, and budget for the full prepaid payment plus taxes and fees.
- Complete adult verification. Mint’s help page says adult consent is required and describes a $0.01 verification charge followed by a refund.
- Decide whether to use Mint Family. To add a child to a Mint Family, the parent must have a Mint Mobile account and be the primary account holder who sends the invitation to the child’s account. That documented requirement applies to adding the child to Mint Family; it does not establish that every standalone child-line purchase requires the parent to move their own number to Mint.
- Configure controls before handing over the phone. Set app, content, screen-time, location and data settings appropriate to the child’s age and device.
- Keep the old service active during a number transfer. Do not cancel it until porting is complete. Record the prepaid term’s end date and check the renewal price ahead of time.
A plan does not appear to include a special child-device replacement program. If a phone is lost or damaged, the family may need to arrange a replacement, insurance or a more rugged device separately.

Who is Mint Kids a good fit for?
Mint can suit a family that wants ordinary talk, text and smartphone data at a low advertised entry price, has good T-Mobile coverage, is comfortable setting up device controls independently and is willing to prepay. It may also be convenient for parents who already use Mint, though families should compare the total cost and terms for every line rather than assuming Mint Family is equivalent to a discounted postpaid family plan.
It is a weaker fit if the main need is built-in monitoring, a locked-down phone for a young child, a monthly payment without a multi-month prepayment, or dependable service in an area where T-Mobile coverage is poor. For emergency-only contact, a limited-use device or cellular watch may fit better than a full smartphone plan.
How it compares with alternatives

These options solve different problems. Compare the cost of the line, the device and any control or monitoring service separately. A lower connectivity price is not automatically the better value if a family needs a managed device ecosystem.
