Microsoft was reportedly testing a cryptocurrency wallet built into Edge, but the evidence does not confirm that it became a publicly released feature. A March 21, 2023 report described screenshots attributed to software researcher Albacore that appeared to show a non-custodial wallet for crypto payments, tokens, NFTs and Web3 services. That is evidence of a reported experiment—not proof that today’s stable Edge browser includes a supported wallet.
What the Edge wallet report showed
The March 2023 report described a wallet interface inside Microsoft Edge rather than a separate browser extension. Screenshots and reported onboarding material appeared to show crypto payments, a decentralized-application (dApp) explorer, access to Web3 and decentralized-finance services, token management, NFT browsing and marketplace access. Coinbase and MoonPay appeared as options for buying cryptocurrency, and users could reportedly add custom tokens. The report’s screenshots and descriptions are the basis for these details; they are not a Microsoft product specification or confirmation that any of the functions shipped.
“Silently under development” is a description of how the experiment surfaced, not evidence of a finished product hidden from the public. A feature discovered in testing may be limited to an internal or experimental build, may change, or may never launch. The report said the wallet had not been officially released at the time.

The available evidence does not establish that Microsoft released the wallet broadly or that it remains available in Edge. The report is historical, from March 2023. It does not confirm current availability, supported versions or operating systems, or whether Microsoft later canceled, shelved, or released the feature in a limited form. Do not treat the screenshots as instructions to find or use a wallet in the current stable browser.

Before trusting a feature presented as an Edge wallet, look for confirmation in Microsoft’s own Edge product information or support documentation, starting with Microsoft’s Edge site. Avoid unofficial downloads or extensions promoted as the wallet based only on search results or social-media posts.
What “non-custodial” would mean
The reported onboarding language described the wallet as non-custodial and said Microsoft would not have access to the user’s password and recovery key. That is a claim reproduced in the report, not a current Microsoft security guarantee.

In general, a non-custodial wallet leaves control of the private keys or recovery phrase with the user. A custodial service, such as an exchange holding assets on a customer’s behalf, administers access for the customer. Self-custody can reduce reliance on a third party to authorize transactions, but it shifts the recovery burden: if you lose the recovery phrase or otherwise lose access to the keys, there may be no company able to restore your wallet. A recovery phrase should never be entered into a website, support form or chat.
Non-custodial does not mean risk-free, anonymous, insured or protected from malware. Phishing sites, malicious dApps, compromised browser profiles, harmful extensions, clipboard-replacement malware and mistaken transactions can all put assets at risk. A browser’s account-sync feature should not be assumed to back up wallet keys.

What the report did not establish
- Supported coins and networks: The report did not identify a supported-asset list. A wallet may support a blockchain without supporting every token on it. A reported option to add a custom token is not evidence that every token or network is supported—or that a token is genuine.
- Security design: The available report does not explain where keys would be stored, whether hardware wallets would work, or whether the wallet received independent security testing.
- Current status: It does not confirm a general release, ongoing development or the experiment’s eventual fate.
- Purchase terms: Coinbase and MoonPay appeared as purchase options in the reported interface. That does not establish that Microsoft operated the services or had a current partnership with either provider. On-ramp availability, identity checks, payment methods, fees, limits and supported assets can vary by provider and location.
Network choice matters: sending an asset over the wrong network can make it difficult or impossible to recover. Token names and symbols can be copied by scam assets, and adding one to a wallet does not authenticate it.
Why put a wallet in a browser?
Microsoft’s motives were not confirmed in the report. Plausible reasons for testing a built-in wallet include making Web3 services easier to access, reducing the need for a separate extension, and keeping more of the user’s browsing and transaction activity within Edge. An integrated interface might lower setup friction and bring dApps, tokens and NFTs together in one place. Those are potential advantages of the design, not verified results from testing.

The trade-off is that a browser wallet would put the ability to hold and transact digital assets inside a widely used browsing environment. That may be convenient, but it does not make a transaction safe simply because the wallet is built in. Users still need to understand what a dApp is asking them to sign, protect their recovery credentials and judge whether a token or website is legitimate.

“Built in” is not, on its own, a security rating. An integrated wallet might avoid the need to install a wallet extension, while an established extension may offer broader compatibility with networks and dApps. Either can expose users to phishing, malicious transaction requests and mistakes. Compare wallets using verifiable details: how keys are stored and recovered, whether keys can be exported, hardware-wallet compatibility, transaction warnings, phishing protections, supported networks, independent audits and the provider’s record of updates and incident response.

For orientation, MetaMask is an extension and mobile-wallet option, Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody product distinct from a Coinbase exchange account, and Brave Wallet is another browser-integrated option. A hardware wallet such as Ledger may suit someone prioritizing offline key protection, but it adds hardware and backup responsibilities. These are examples to compare, not endorsements or evidence that any one option is safest for every user.
If you are considering any browser wallet
- Confirm its availability and support in official documentation before depositing funds.
- Check how recovery works after a browser reset, device loss or reinstall, and whether keys can be exported securely. Do not assume browser sync protects them.
- Keep the recovery phrase offline and never share it with anyone claiming to be Microsoft, a wallet provider, Coinbase or MoonPay.
- Verify the recipient address and network before sending. For a new wallet or destination, consider testing with a small amount first.
- Inspect dApp connection and transaction requests carefully. A connection or signature can have consequences beyond simply viewing a site.
- For substantial holdings, consider whether hardware-based key protection fits your needs and whether you can safely manage its backup.
- Remember that an experimental feature can be withdrawn. Do not place funds somewhere without understanding how you would recover or move them if support ended.
The Edge wallet story is credible as a report of a Microsoft experiment in 2023. It is not, on the available evidence, confirmation that Edge currently offers a supported built-in cryptocurrency wallet.
