Rico Mariani’s Microsoft departure happened in 2017, not 2026. He announced that his last day would be March 24, 2017, after more than 28 years at the company, then joined Facebook’s Seattle engineering organization. Microsoft’s 2026 Security Blog identifies him as a Distinguished Engineer, Vice President and Deputy CISO, so the old headline describes a historical job change—not a current resignation.
What happened in March 2017
Mariani announced his departure on his Performance Tidbits blog. His final day at Microsoft was March 24, 2017. The announcement was about moving to another technology company, not retiring. At the time, he also questioned whether he should continue using a blog associated with Microsoft after leaving. VentureBeat’s contemporaneous report covered the announcement and final date.
The “29 years” in the headline is a rounded figure. Mariani joined Microsoft in 1988 and left in March 2017, a tenure of more than 28 years—roughly 28 and a half years, rather than a precise 29. “Nearly three decades” is the clearest shorthand.

Mariani’s Microsoft career crossed several generations of products and engineering work. Accounts of his career describe early language and compiler work, Visual C++ and the Programmers Workbench, work involving MSN, and a development-management role with Microsoft Sidewalk. Later, he was chief architect for Visual Studio 2010, worked on the Midori project, and led performance, power and reliability work associated with Microsoft Edge. Performance was more than one item on that project list: it was the technical specialty for which colleagues and readers knew him. A Microsoft Research profile from 2006 described him as a software architect and performance expert whose writing and teaching helped establish his reputation. His blog, Rico Mariani’s Performance Tidbits, shared practical thinking about performance and programming tools, often grounded in problems from his Microsoft work.
The engineering idea behind the “pit of success”
Mariani is closely associated with the phrase “pit of success,” a way of describing software design that makes the successful path easier to follow than the failure-prone one. For a developer platform, that means APIs, frameworks and defaults should guide users toward correct, reliable outcomes instead of making them fight the tools or avoid hidden traps. The phrase is best treated as an idea he helped popularize and explain, not as a claim that he definitively invented it. In GeekWire’s interview, Mariani described the goal as making success easy rather than forcing developers down a hard path.

That philosophy helps explain why his influence was not limited to code shipped under his own name. Performance guidance, technical communication and engineering practices can affect many teams and products over time. In that sense, the 2017 news was about the departure of a long-serving technical voice as well as an individual contributor.

Facebook confirmed that Mariani was joining its Seattle engineering organization. In comments reported by GeekWire, he described the move as a new adventure and spoke about applying his performance experience while taking on work beyond the narrow label of “the performance guy.” The exact responsibilities of his initial Facebook role had not yet been finalized when the hiring was reported, so a specific title or project should not be inferred.

The move also fit the broader growth of major technology companies’ engineering presence in the Seattle area, but its significance for Mariani was personal and professional: after decades at one company, he was taking on a new challenge and expanding the scope of how he might contribute.
He later returned to Microsoft
The 2017 departure was not the end of Mariani’s Microsoft career. His public LinkedIn profile lists a Microsoft role beginning January 17, 2023; that date is self-reported profile information, rather than a company announcement. More recent first-party evidence is clearer about his later affiliation: a Microsoft Security Blog article published in April 2026 identifies him as a Distinguished Engineer, Vice President and Deputy CISO. The article’s author biography shows that his work at Microsoft now includes security leadership, in addition to the performance expertise associated with his earlier career.

That later role should not be projected backward onto 2017. At the time he left, coverage focused on his long engineering career and performance work. The current title reflects a subsequent chapter.
