There is no official consumer “lifetime Microsoft 365” subscription. Microsoft 365 is subscription software. The legitimate non-subscription alternative is a separate product, Office 2024, which licenses a fixed release and does not promise free upgrades to every future version. A cheap listing for “Office 365 lifetime,” “Office Professional Plus lifetime,” or “Office 2024 Pro Plus lifetime” may be unauthorized, mislicensed, counterfeit, or tied to an account the seller controls.

Does Microsoft sell a lifetime Microsoft 365 plan?
No—not as an official consumer product. Microsoft’s current consumer offers are Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, and Premium, all subscription plans. Its store lists Office Home 2024 separately as a one-time purchase: Microsoft’s consumer plans and pricing.
“Office 365” is also outdated branding for many consumer and business subscriptions. Sellers may retain the phrase because people search for it, but combining it with “lifetime subscription,” “lifetime cloud storage,” or “all future upgrades” conflicts with Microsoft’s product structure.

What “lifetime” can legitimately mean
In a genuine one-time Office sale, “lifetime” generally means a perpetual license for one particular release. It does not mean the buyer’s lifetime, unlimited installations, permanent security support, free future major versions, or bundled Microsoft 365 services.
- Office 2024 one-time purchases do not include an upgrade option to future major releases.
- Support and compatibility eventually have limits.
- Device, transfer, and account rules depend on the product terms.
- One-time Office does not automatically include OneDrive storage, premium collaboration features, or subscription AI benefits.

What a legitimate Office 2024 purchase includes
A genuine one-time purchase gives you the classic desktop applications for the licensed computer or computers allowed by the product terms. Office 2024 requires internet access initially for installation and activation, and for updates. It receives applicable security updates, but not the continuous feature updates supplied with Microsoft 365.
“Perpetual” is therefore a licensing description, not a promise that the software will work with every future operating system or remain supported forever. Microsoft states that Office LTSC 2024 reaches end of support on October 9, 2029; that date should not automatically be applied to every consumer Office 2024 edition.
Why “Professional Plus lifetime” deserves extra scrutiny
Office Professional Plus is commonly associated with volume licensing and organizational deployment. Microsoft describes Office LTSC as a device-based perpetual product obtained through commercial licensing channels. A consumer marketplace listing for “Office Professional Plus 2024 lifetime” at a few dollars may involve a volume key used outside its terms, an entitlement connected to another organization, an unauthorized or counterfeit key, a shared account, or an activator.

That does not prove every third-party Professional Plus sale is counterfeit. It does mean the buyer must establish the edition, licensing channel, transfer rights, and account ownership rather than relying on the product name.

A key or account can activate today and still be unauthorized. Activation shows only that Microsoft’s system accepted the credential at that moment. It does not prove that the seller had the right to resell it, that the buyer owns the entitlement, or that it will remain valid.

Microsoft warns that counterfeit installations can later display “Get genuine Office” messages and recommends removing them and obtaining software through Microsoft or a credible source: Microsoft’s genuine Office guidance.
Red flags in a “lifetime” listing
- It calls Microsoft 365 or Office 365 a “lifetime subscription.”
- It promises every future Office version for one payment.
- It does not identify the exact edition and license type.
- It markets Professional Plus to ordinary consumers without explaining commercial licensing.
- The price is dramatically below Microsoft’s price without a credible explanation.
- The seller supplies a username and password instead of redeeming a license to your account.
- You are told to change account details, provide remote access, disable antivirus, or run an activator, crack, KMS emulator, or command script.
- The license appears under another person’s Microsoft account or organization.
- The offer includes “free lifetime OneDrive” or “unlimited Copilot” with a supposedly one-time Office purchase.
- There is no receipt identifying the product, seller, and refund terms.
How to verify before paying
- Name the exact product. Microsoft 365, Office Home 2024, Office Home & Business 2024, and Office LTSC 2024 are different products.
- Confirm the payment model. Ask whether it is a subscription or one-time purchase and what “lifetime” specifically covers.
- Use your own Microsoft account. A seller-created account can remain under the seller’s recovery email, phone number, or administrator control.
- Check Services & subscriptions. Sign in directly at Microsoft and verify that the entitlement is associated with your account. This helps confirm account association, not the seller’s authorization: Microsoft account verification guidance.
- Check the intended market and use. Ask about consumer versus organizational licensing, device limits, transfer rights, support, and refunds.
- Compare the price and paperwork. Microsoft’s U.S. store showed these prices on August 18, 2026: Personal $99.99/year or $9.99/month; Family $129.99/year or $12.99/month; Premium $199.99/year or $19.99/month; Office Home 2024 $179.99. Prices can change by date, country, tax, promotion, and channel.
If you already bought one
Before installation
- Do not run an activator, script, or installer supplied by an unknown seller.
- Save the receipt, messages, screenshots, and listing.
- Sign in directly to your own Microsoft account and inspect Services & subscriptions.
- Request a refund if the product or licensing terms differ from the listing.
If suspicious software is installed
- Remove activators and suspicious installers; do not give the seller remote access.
- Run a reputable security scan.
- Change Microsoft account passwords and review security activity if credentials were shared.
- Request a seller or payment-provider refund.
- Uninstall counterfeit Office before installing a genuine copy. Microsoft’s guidance includes an uninstall troubleshooter for Microsoft 365, Office 2021, 2019, and 2016; it currently does not uninstall Office 2024: uninstall and genuine-license guidance.
If the key fails
Check whether it was mistyped, already redeemed, intended for another region or edition, blocked, or never authorized for resale. Microsoft’s product-key support page covers invalid-key errors: invalid Office product key support. Do not keep trying random activation tools.
What happens when Microsoft 365 ends
Microsoft 365 apps can remain installed, but the account must keep an active entitlement and connect regularly for validation. Microsoft says that if users do not connect at least once a month, apps may enter reduced-functionality mode or show an unlicensed-product error: Microsoft 365 connectivity and activation information. Editing and creation may be restricted, while OneDrive storage and other premium services are affected by the plan’s status.

To identify the installed edition, Microsoft says Windows users can open an Office app and choose File > Account; Mac users can use the application menu’s About option. That identifies what is installed, not whether the seller was authorized.
The Bottom Line
Decision rule: choose Microsoft 365 for ongoing updates and cloud services; choose Office Home 2024 for a legitimate one-time purchase of a fixed release; choose Home & Business 2024 when Outlook and business use matter. Treat any unknown seller’s “Microsoft 365 lifetime” or “Office Professional Plus lifetime” offer as unverified until the exact license, account ownership, and resale authorization are documented.
