Yes—but not as one single, fully itemized “Redmond plan.” Microsoft made several confirmed workforce reductions in 2025. The major May and July rounds eliminated about 15,000 jobs globally, while Washington state recorded more than 3,200 reported cuts from May through September. Additional smaller Redmond reductions followed, so “more cuts this year” described an ongoing sequence rather than one later announcement.
This is a retrospective of the 2025 events. Global figures and Washington WARN filings are not interchangeable, and WARN notices do not capture every small, international, performance-related or voluntary reduction.

The May, June, July and September Washington figures add up to more than 3,200 reported jobs. The May and July global rounds add up to approximately 15,000 jobs, but that is not a complete annual total: it excludes the January reduction and smaller or unreported cuts.
What “Redmond layoffs” means in the filings
News reports often use “Redmond” as shorthand for Microsoft’s Washington operations. The filings can include headquarters employees, remote workers assigned to the Washington operation and other Puget Sound positions. Therefore, saying that “Redmond lost 3,200 jobs” overstates what the evidence shows. The more precise statement is that Washington state recorded more than 3,200 reported Microsoft job cuts between May and September 2025.

The May announcement date and July 12 effective date also illustrate why totals and dates can appear inconsistent. Employee notification, a public announcement, a WARN filing and the last day of employment can all occur at different times.
Which teams and roles were affected?
The reductions were broad rather than confined to one department. Reporting identified software engineering and product-management positions in the May round, while the July cuts included sales and gaming. LinkedIn and other Microsoft organizations were also affected, and the company said the changes spanned levels, teams and geographies. Management and supervisory layers were a particular focus.
WARN data is useful but incomplete. Smaller reductions, performance-based terminations, voluntary departures, international cuts and layoffs below reporting thresholds may not appear in a state filing.

Why cut jobs while Microsoft was profitable?
Microsoft described the reductions as organizational changes designed to build high-performing, more agile teams and reduce management layers. The company was reporting strong results, so the layoffs were not evidence by themselves that Microsoft was near collapse.
Large profitable companies can reduce staff while reallocating money to higher-priority businesses. In Microsoft’s case, plausible overlapping objectives included correcting pandemic-era hiring growth, simplifying reporting structures, shifting people toward cloud and AI priorities, and funding expensive data-center infrastructure. A stable overall headcount also would not contradict layoffs: Microsoft can eliminate roles in one group while hiring in another, moving employees internally or using contractors.
Did AI cause the layoffs?
AI was important context, but “AI replaced 15,000 Microsoft workers” is not a verified explanation. Microsoft publicly emphasized efficiency, organizational design and management layers. At the same time, it was making exceptionally large AI infrastructure investments, discussing AI-assisted coding and cutting some engineering and other roles. Those facts support a strategic connection, not a one-for-one causal finding.

Microsoft said affected workers received severance benefits, outplacement support, career counseling, résumé assistance, job-search help and assistance seeking other internal Microsoft roles. Individual terms can differ by country, employment category and separation agreement. News reports do not establish a universal formula for severance, equity, bonus treatment, healthcare continuation or immigration support.
Anyone affected should rely on the formal separation documents, confirm the final employment and benefits dates, and ask specifically about equity, healthcare and immigration matters. Washington workers can consult the state unemployment program; federal information about continuing employer health coverage is available from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Was another mass layoff officially planned?
The evidence supports continuing reductions, including the 42-job September filing, but not a single publicly disclosed future headcount target. Microsoft characterized workforce and organizational changes as a regular part of managing the business. The safest conclusion is that additional smaller cuts continued after the major May and July rounds; it is not accurate to claim that Microsoft announced one specific later mass layoff without a contemporaneous company announcement or filing.

- About 15,000: combined major May and July global rounds, before January and later smaller cuts.
