Yes. Microsoft is restoring MSN as the umbrella brand for its consumer content services, a shift it began in 2024 after promoting Microsoft Start as the name for its personalized news feed. The change is mainly about branding and consolidation: it does not bring back MSN Messenger, dial-up internet, or the old MSN subscription service.
What Microsoft is bringing back
In November 2024, Microsoft said it was unifying its content services under the MSN brand to simplify the customer experience. The company said the change would not affect functionality. In other words, the announcement described a brand transition, not a newly built portal or a wholesale return to Microsoft’s early consumer internet business. Windows Central reported Microsoft’s statement.
MSN had not disappeared in the meantime: MSN.com and MSN-branded content continued. The 2024 move is better understood as restoring MSN as the main identity for a collection of consumer content experiences. The name and refreshed butterfly logo can change even when the underlying feed and features remain broadly familiar.

Microsoft introduced Microsoft Start in 2021 as a personalized news and interests service built from MSN and Microsoft News. It was presented across Windows, Edge, the web, and mobile, with recommendations informed by machine learning and AI-assisted systems alongside human moderation. Windows Central’s account of the launch describes that positioning.

Microsoft later began consolidating the consumer content experience under MSN again. That does not establish that every Start-branded app or interface has been renamed, that Microsoft Start has been technically shut down, or that every surface is identical. Microsoft’s 2024 statement specifically framed the change as unification under MSN and said functionality would not be affected.
What MSN offers now
Microsoft’s current MSN overview describes a personalized content hub that brings together news, entertainment and inspiration, weather, stock tracking, short videos, Copilot-related features, and newsletters. It also promotes Copilot Daily, a news and weather summary experience. Microsoft’s MSN page says recommendations can be personalized, including through a Microsoft account and feedback on content cards.

Microsoft describes AI-powered recommendations, but that does not mean every article or item on MSN is generated by AI. MSN is the consumer content brand; Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant family; and Copilot Daily is one specific summary feature associated with MSN. Availability varies by device, market, and browser version, so features and presentation may differ between users.
Where you can find MSN
Microsoft lists MSN.com, Microsoft Edge, Windows PCs, PC and Mac browsers, and mobile apps as ways to access the service. Edge’s new-tab experience and Windows feed or Widgets surfaces can connect users to MSN content, but they should not be assumed to use identical layouts or settings. Signing in with a Microsoft account can carry personalization across supported experiences; a signed-out feed may differ.

Why the brand matters to Microsoft
Microsoft’s stated reason for the 2024 consolidation was to simplify the customer experience. Beyond that stated rationale, MSN offers a recognizable identity that can span the web, Windows, Edge, and mobile rather than asking users to understand another consumer-service name. Its long history may also make the name familiar, though Microsoft has not established that brand recognition was the sole reason for the change.
There is also a commercial dimension. Microsoft Advertising identifies MSN among Microsoft’s consumer properties and describes advertising across a wider network that includes Bing, Edge, Outlook, Windows, LinkedIn, Xbox, and Copilot. That supports viewing MSN as part of Microsoft’s broader advertising ecosystem—not as a consumer subscription product created by the rebrand. Microsoft Advertising’s overview discusses that cross-property strategy. It does not establish that the MSN rebrand alone changes advertising performance, publisher traffic, or revenue.

Why MSN’s return does not mean more MSN in every Windows panel
Microsoft can restore MSN as a service brand while making some Windows placements less prominent. A report on Windows 11 preview builds in 2026 described a move to hide the MSN feed by default in the Widgets panel and make the experience quieter and more customizable. That report concerns preview-build behavior, not a guarantee that every Windows PC has the same setting or rollout. Windows Central covered the Widgets changes.
So the claim that “MSN is coming back to Windows” is too broad if it implies the feed will be more prominent everywhere. Microsoft still lists Windows among MSN’s access points, while the presentation of content inside Windows can vary by surface and rollout.

What is not coming back
- MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger: The brand consolidation does not announce the return of either messaging service.
- MSN dial-up internet: The current MSN offering is a content and information hub, not a revival of the 1990s subscription-based online service.
- The old MSN ecosystem in its historical form: MSN’s earlier services and portal changed over time; restoring the name does not restore every discontinued app or service.
Microsoft first launched MSN alongside Windows 95 in 1995 as The Microsoft Network, then moved toward the MSN.com portal model. In 2014, it described a redesigned MSN portal covering areas such as news, sports, money, travel, food, and health. That history helps explain the breadth of the name, but the current service is a modern content platform, not a recreation of those earlier products.
