In February 2022, Microsoft hired former Google Maps leaders Nicholas Lee and Russell Dicker as corporate vice presidents on its Maps and Local team, according to GeekWire. The report placed the team within Microsoft’s Web Experiences organization, or WebXT. This is a historical hiring story, not a new 2026 development.
Who joined Microsoft’s Maps and Local team?
GeekWire reported the appointments on February 16, 2022, citing an internal Microsoft memo and information from Dicker’s LinkedIn profile. It said both executives joined Microsoft as corporate vice presidents. GeekWire’s report did not describe them as founders or creators of Google Maps; their backgrounds were in senior engineering and product leadership.
Nicholas Lee: engineering leadership
Lee had been a senior director of engineering for Google Maps and had worked at Google for nearly 17 years, according to GeekWire. An internal memo viewed by the publication named him as the leader of Microsoft’s Maps and Local team.

Russell Dicker: mapping and mobility products
Dicker had been a senior director of product at Google. His LinkedIn profile, as described by GeekWire, listed Google Maps Routing + Navigation, Google Automotive Services, Transit, and Multimodal among his areas of responsibility.

Where the team fit inside Microsoft
The report placed Maps and Local within Web Experiences, commonly called WebXT. It described WebXT as encompassing Bing, Microsoft News, Maps, Microsoft’s advertising platform, and the Edge browser, and identified Mikhail Parakhin as the group’s president at the time.
That organizational placement put mapping alongside Microsoft’s search and web products rather than presenting it as a standalone effort. It does not establish the executives’ precise reporting lines or how Maps and Local worked with those other businesses.

Why the hires were notable
Lee’s reported engineering background and Dicker’s product experience covered complementary parts of mapping: the systems behind map services, and applications such as routing, navigation, automotive services, and transit. Together, those backgrounds could have been relevant to Microsoft’s mapping and local-information capabilities.
Maps and local information can also support discovery and search, where users look for places, services, and routes. Because WebXT included Bing and advertising, the organizational context makes those connections strategically relevant. But the report did not say that Microsoft hired Lee and Dicker to meet a specific advertising target, launch a named product, or take on Google Maps in consumer navigation. Those would go beyond what was reported.

What was—and was not—confirmed publicly
This was not reported as a Microsoft press release or public announcement. GeekWire said it had seen an internal memo concerning Lee’s appointment, used Dicker’s LinkedIn profile for his former Google responsibilities, and that Microsoft declined to comment when asked about the hires.

- Not established by the report: Their individual mandates, compensation, exact reporting lines, or the products they were expected to develop.

The available account therefore supports a conclusion about executive recruitment and organizational placement—not an acquisition, a disclosed product roadmap, or proof that Microsoft set out to replace Google Maps.
