Microsoft raised Canadian starting prices for several Surface Pro and Surface Laptop configurations by as much as CAD $700 in April 2026. Microsoft attributed the change to higher memory and component costs. The news is now partly historical: Microsoft’s Canadian store has since introduced newer editions and changed the prices shoppers see. This guide separates the April increase from the current lineup and shows how to budget for accessories, tax, trade-ins and refurbished hardware.

What changed in April 2026?
MobileSyrup reported the following Canadian starting-price increases on April 14, 2026. The previous-price figures below are that publication’s reported comparisons, not a current Microsoft price list.

“Up to $700” does not mean every Surface became $700 more expensive, and it is not a 700-percent increase. It describes the largest change among the listed base configurations. A higher-memory or larger-SSD version costs more than the advertised starting price.
Why did Microsoft raise prices?
Microsoft told Windows Central that it was updating Surface pricing because of “recent increases in memory and component costs.” The increases arrived amid wider reporting of pressure on memory supply and demand associated with artificial-intelligence infrastructure, but “AI caused this specific hike” is stronger than Microsoft’s public explanation supports.
The lineup has already moved on
The April story covered the then-current portfolio. Microsoft’s Canadian store now labels products by newer generations, so comparing an April price with a current listing can produce a misleading result unless the processor, RAM, storage, display and generation match.

Those are snapshots, not guarantees of today’s price. Always open the exact SKU before ordering.
Budget for the Surface Pro as a complete setup
The Surface Pro is a detachable Windows tablet rather than a conventional laptop. Microsoft lists the power supply in the box, but the keyboard and pen are sold separately on the product page. A realistic budget therefore has three layers:
- Tablet only: the advertised starting price, useful for tablet-first buyers.
- Tablet plus keyboard: the relevant total for most laptop-style work.
- Tablet plus keyboard and pen: the full setup for handwriting, drawing or annotation.
Add Canadian sales tax, delivery, optional storage or RAM upgrades and any protection plan. Microsoft’s August 18 listing showed Microsoft Complete at CAD $189 for two years, $286 for three years and $397 for four years. These are optional plans, not part of the base price. Product pages also showed 15-month introductory Microsoft 365 offers of CAD $115 for Personal and $145 for Family; each renews at the regular annual rate unless cancelled.

What Microsoft offers now
Microsoft advertises 60-day returns and 60-day price protection, subject to exclusions and terms. Its Canadian store also advertised a limited trade-in promotion worth up to an extra CAD $540 on eligible purchases. “Up to” is important: the device must meet the program’s condition and eligibility rules.
Trade-in terms require the old device to power on, hold a charge without being plugged in, work properly, have no prohibited damage or modification, be free of password protection and include required accessories and storage components. Inspection can reduce the value or make a device ineligible.
Can a retailer or refurbished unit save money?
In April, some Canadian retailers reportedly still had older inventory at pre-increase prices while Microsoft’s store updated first. That was a launch-window observation, not a promise that old-price stock remains. By August, inventory may have sold out, been repriced or been replaced by a newer generation.

Compare the exact model number and generation, processor platform, RAM, SSD, keyboard inclusion, warranty source, return window and whether the unit is new, open-box or refurbished. A low headline price for an 8GB/256GB model is not a fair comparison with a higher-spec Microsoft configuration.
Microsoft currently advertises Certified Refurbished Surface devices as cleaned, repaired and tested, with savings of up to 30% versus new. Availability varies, and the saving may disappear after buying a keyboard. Check battery coverage, warranty length and return rights before paying.

Who should buy, wait or switch?
Buy now if…
- You specifically need the Pro’s detachable tablet, kickstand, touch input or pen workflow.
- You need a particular RAM, storage or processor configuration and can accept its total cost.
- A current Microsoft promotion, trade-in value or price-protection term materially improves the deal.
Wait or buy refurbished if…
- Your current computer works and a refresh or sale could change the comparison.
- You do not need the newest processor generation.
- A certified refurbished configuration has enough RAM and storage and a clear battery and warranty policy.
Choose another computer if…
A conventional Windows laptop includes the keyboard, usually offers more ports and may deliver better value. Business-class Lenovo, Dell or HP systems can be preferable for serviceability, enterprise deployment and support. A MacBook Air suits buyers without Windows-only software; an iPad with keyboard suits tablet-first use but is not a replacement for every desktop Windows workflow.

Surface Pro models listed on Microsoft’s current pages use Snapdragon processors and Windows 11 Home. Most Windows applications may work through native support or emulation, but verify compatibility for specialized software, older drivers, enterprise VPN tools, virtualization, plug-ins and unusual peripherals before buying an ARM-based model.
Canadian Surface buying checklist
- Confirm the generation and exact Canadian model number.
- Match processor, RAM, SSD and screen size when comparing prices.
- Check whether the keyboard and pen are included.
- Calculate the after-tax total, not just “starting at” pricing.
- Read the warranty, return and price-protection terms.
- For refurbished or open-box units, check battery condition and inspection coverage.
- Confirm trade-in condition rules and submission deadlines; do not assume the maximum credit.
- Test compatibility with your Windows applications, drivers and peripherals.
Bottom line
The April 2026 increase made Surface harder to recommend on price alone, with reported increases of up to CAD $700 on base configurations. Surface can still make sense when its tablet form factor, touch, pen support, kickstand and Windows environment are the reason you are buying it. For a conventional laptop buyer, the higher total cost makes refurbished hardware, retailer clearance and non-Surface Windows laptops more compelling.
