Microsoft’s commercial Copilot “monthly” options do not all mean month-to-month service. An annual commitment paid monthly costs about 5% more than annual payment. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business also has a genuine monthly-commitment option, listed at $25.20 per user per month in the United States—20% above its $21 annual-payment list price. The figures below reflect Microsoft’s US pricing displayed in September 2026; taxes, reseller discounts, currency and contract terms can change the invoice.
What Microsoft changed
On December 1, 2024, Microsoft began offering monthly billing for selected commercial Copilot subscriptions, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot for Sales and Copilot for Service. The change let customers spread payments across the year, but it did not remove the annual commitment. The monthly-payment option carried a 5% premium. Office Watch’s contemporary report describes the original terms and the availability through routes such as Buy Online, Cloud Solution Provider and Microsoft Customer Agreement for Enterprise.
The important distinction remains:
- Payment frequency: whether Microsoft invoices monthly or annually.
- Commitment term: whether the subscription lasts a year or can be renewed month by month.
A monthly invoice can therefore still represent a one-year contract.

Microsoft now presents a separate Microsoft 365 Copilot Business offer alongside the enterprise-oriented Microsoft 365 Copilot product. Business pricing includes all three structures: annual commitment with annual payment, annual commitment with monthly payment, and monthly commitment with monthly payment. The Business product is publicly positioned for organizations with up to 300 users.

Microsoft’s US pricing page also displays a promotional annual price of $18 per user per month for Copilot Business. The page identifies a July 1–September 30, 2026 offer period; eligibility, channels and terms should be confirmed at checkout because promotional prices are not necessarily permanent list prices.

Microsoft 365 Copilot versus Copilot Business
Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30 per user per month when paid yearly in the United States. The annual-commitment/monthly-payment figure shown in Microsoft business pricing material is $31.50. It is an add-on: a qualifying Microsoft 365 license is required, so the Copilot price is not the complete Microsoft 365 bill.
Microsoft positions this offering for enterprise customers and describes work-grounded Copilot across Microsoft 365 applications, with access to agents through Copilot Studio. Feature availability can depend on the tenant, administrator settings, geography, application version and the qualifying license.

Copilot Business
Copilot Business is the small and midsize organization route publicly limited to up to 300 users. Microsoft describes AI chat connected to work and web data; Copilot in Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel; agent creation and use through Copilot Studio; and enterprise-grade security, privacy and compliance capabilities. A qualifying Microsoft 365 Business subscription is required.

What is included—and what may cost extra
Paid work-grounded Copilot licenses add capabilities beyond the Copilot Chat experience that may be included with some eligible Microsoft 365 plans. Microsoft’s pricing pages distinguish consumer, Business, enterprise and Copilot Studio offerings; availability is not identical across every app, tenant or country.

Copilot Studio deserves separate budgeting. Microsoft’s June 2026 Copilot Studio Licensing Guide separates pay-as-you-go, credit-pack subscriptions and Microsoft Agent pre-purchase plans. Microsoft 365 Copilot includes Copilot Studio use rights subject to applicable fair-use or other limits, while separately purchased Studio capacity follows its own credit or consumption model.
- Routine Copilot use inside licensed Microsoft 365 apps is primarily seat-based.
- Building, publishing or running agents—especially through external channels, connectors or high-volume automation—may consume separately metered capacity.
- Access to agent-building tools does not mean unlimited external agent operation.
Estimate expected agent volume and channels before treating the seat price as the entire AI budget.

Choosing the right commitment
Annual commitment, annual payment
Choose this when adoption is predictable, procurement can pay upfront and the priority is the lowest listed recurring price. The trade-off is reduced flexibility during the committed term.

Annual commitment, monthly payment
This is the cash-flow compromise. You receive monthly invoices while accepting a one-year commitment and approximately a 5% premium. It suits organizations that expect to keep the seats but do not want to pay the full annual amount at once.
Monthly commitment, monthly payment
For Copilot Business, the listed $25.20 price buys genuine month-to-month commitment. It can make sense for a pilot, seasonal workforce or uncertain headcount when avoiding a year-long obligation is worth the 20% premium over the $21 annual/annual list price.
Business or enterprise
Copilot Business is the public route for organizations up to 300 users with qualifying Microsoft 365 Business licensing. Larger organizations, enterprise licensing, complex governance requirements or negotiated enterprise-agreement purchasing generally point toward Microsoft 365 Copilot instead. Confirm the available SKU with Microsoft or your reseller before assigning seats.

Contract and budgeting checks
- Identify the SKU. Confirm whether the quote is Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Business, Copilot Chat or Copilot Studio.
- Write both terms down. Record payment frequency and commitment length separately.
- Add the base license. Copilot is an add-on in the relevant commercial scenarios.
- Check seat-change rules. Cancellation and reductions can differ under a Microsoft Customer Agreement, Enterprise Agreement or CSP terms. An annual subscription billed monthly may continue through its committed term.
- Validate the promotion. Capture the offer dates, eligibility, seat count, channel and renewal price for any $18 Copilot Business quote.
- Model agent usage. Review Studio credits, pay-as-you-go rates and capacity requirements for planned agents.
- Allow for non-license costs. Data governance, permissions cleanup, rollout, training, administration and adoption can materially affect the project budget.
Common mistakes
- Calling annual commitment with monthly payments “month-to-month.”
- Using the $30 Microsoft 365 Copilot figure as the price for every Copilot product.
- Treating $18 Copilot Business as a permanent, unconditional list price.
- Ignoring the 300-user Business limit.
- Assuming Copilot Studio rights are unlimited in every scenario.
- Assuming a feature is available in every geography, tenant or app version.
- Forgetting that the quoted figures are US-dollar prices and may exclude tax or reseller adjustments.
