Micron and G.Skill did not issue a joint announcement. G.Skill’s December 16, 2025 notice warned that DRAM supply constraints, shortages, AI-industry demand and higher procurement costs were making prices volatile. Micron’s December 17 earnings report and subsequent comments showed why: data-center and AI customers were absorbing investment and production capacity, while its CEO expected tight conditions to continue beyond calendar 2026.
The late-2025 shock appears to have moderated in parts of the DDR5 market during 2026, but that does not guarantee a return to old lows. For anyone budgeting a PC build or upgrade, the practical answer is to buy only the capacity and compatibility you need, compare several sellers, and treat waiting as a calculated risk—not a promise of cheaper RAM.
What G.Skill actually announced
In its December 16, 2025 statement, G.Skill said DRAM prices were experiencing “significant industry-wide volatility.” It cited severe supply constraints, shortages and unprecedented AI demand. The company also said its procurement costs had risen substantially and that retail prices could change without notice.
That was a warning about G.Skill’s costs and pricing conditions, not a universal percentage increase or an industry-wide price list. It is also why a price seen on one day—or from one marketplace seller—may not represent the market as a whole.

What Micron reported
Micron’s fiscal first-quarter 2026 release, covering the quarter ended November 27, 2025, reported:
- Revenue of $13.643 billion, versus $8.709 billion a year earlier.
- GAAP net income of $5.240 billion.
- Operating cash flow of $8.41 billion.
- Capital expenditure of $4.5 billion.
- Cloud Memory Business Unit revenue of $5.284 billion.
- Mobile and Client Business Unit revenue of $4.255 billion.
- Fiscal-second-quarter revenue guidance of $18.70 billion, plus or minus $400 million.
Micron described itself as an essential AI enabler and emphasized investment to meet memory and storage demand. HotHardware’s report of CEO Sanjay Mehrotra’s comments said Micron expected tight market conditions to persist beyond calendar 2026. That is management guidance, not a guaranteed end date or a promise about the price of a particular 32GB kit.
Why AI affects ordinary desktop memory
AI accelerators use high-bandwidth memory (HBM), while data centers also consume conventional server DRAM, high-capacity modules and storage. These are not the same products as a desktop DDR5 DIMM. It is inaccurate to say that AI companies simply bought all of the RAM intended for gaming PCs.
The connection is the broader manufacturing ecosystem. Memory suppliers allocate cleanroom capacity, advanced packaging, engineering attention and new capital spending toward products with the strongest demand and margins. When data-center demand accelerates, consumer products can receive less priority or face tighter component availability. Existing DRAM cycles—alternating between oversupply and shortage—can amplify that effect.
Retail prices can move especially sharply because retailers and marketplace sellers reprice available inventory quickly, while large OEM customers may be covered by longer contracts. DDR4, standard DDR5, high-capacity DDR5, server RDIMMs, HBM and mobile memory therefore do not have identical price curves.
How extreme was the consumer impact?
HotHardware reported a specific Amazon listing on December 18, 2025: a 32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5-6400 kit priced at $388.99, compared with an approximate historical low of $109.99. That was more than 250% above the cited low.

This is a dated, single-listing example—not a current universal price. Seller, region, stock and promotions can change the result, and a historical low is not the same as an average retail price. Do not use $388.99 as an August 2026 quotation without checking live listings.

What Micron’s Crucial withdrawal means
Micron said it would wind down Crucial-branded consumer memory and storage sales after nearly three decades. The move removes a familiar consumer-facing supplier, but it does not mean Micron stopped making memory or storage, nor that every Crucial product vanished immediately.
Existing retailer inventory, warranties and support obligations should be considered separately from future availability. The withdrawal is best understood as a visible consequence of Micron’s strategic emphasis on higher-value data-center opportunities—not the event that created the global shortage. It suggests the economics of serving broad retail channels became less attractive than serving enterprise demand.
Has the crisis ended in 2026?
No definitive “all clear” is supported by the evidence. Later 2026 coverage on HotHardware’s DDR5 topic page described prices moving in a more favorable direction by March, but not necessarily returning to previous lows. That can coexist with Micron’s earlier expectation that tightness would last beyond 2026.
The most defensible assessment is that the late-2025 shock moderated in some DDR5 segments, while structural pressure from AI-related demand and constrained supply remained. Conditions differ by country, capacity, speed, generation and seller, so a current buying decision requires current local prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould you buy RAM now or wait?
Buy now when capacity is an immediate need
If your computer is paging to storage, crashing under a workload or blocking a time-sensitive build, buy a sensibly priced compatible kit rather than gambling on a perfect bottom. Prioritize capacity and platform stability over RGB lighting or a small frequency premium. For many gaming systems, a reasonably priced 32GB matched kit is more sensible than an extreme-speed kit that costs substantially more.

Check the motherboard manual and CPU support list. Confirm the memory generation, maximum capacity and DIMM count. AMD systems commonly use EXPO profiles; Intel systems commonly use XMP. A board’s qualified vendor list (QVL) can reduce compatibility risk, although absence from a QVL does not automatically mean a kit will fail.
Wait or monitor prices when the purchase is discretionary
Waiting is reasonable if your current capacity is adequate, the desired kit is inflated by a temporary shortage, or you expect to change platforms soon. Track multiple retailers and set a target price. Waiting is not guaranteed to save money: Micron’s forecast implied prolonged tightness, while later reporting suggested only partial improvement.
For a new PC, compare the whole platform
A DDR4 platform may cost less in a particular market, but it can limit upgrade paths and newer CPU features. DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically incompatible; a DDR5 module cannot be installed in a DDR4 motherboard. If the system is intended to last several years, compare the total CPU, motherboard and memory cost rather than choosing a generation solely on a temporary module-price difference.
Do not pay for the highest advertised MT/s rating unless your workload and platform can use it. Fast DDR5 may require a BIOS update, manual tuning or a lower setting for stability. Mixing separately purchased kits can also cause problems even when labels appear identical.
For laptops, verify the form factor first
Desktop DIMMs are not interchangeable with SO-DIMMs, LPCAMM2 or soldered memory. Many modern laptops cannot be upgraded. Check the exact model’s service manual before ordering; G.Skill lists separate laptop/notebook products from desktop memory on its official site.

- Compare the complete specification: capacity, module count, speed, timings and voltage.
- Prefer a matched kit when dual-channel operation is intended.
- Check seller identity, return terms and warranty coverage.
- Be cautious of used modules, counterfeit labels and listings with incorrect generation or capacity.
- Do not assume a premium brand is the cheapest; Corsair, Kingston and TeamGroup are alternatives, not guaranteed bargains.
- For remaining Crucial stock, confirm who handles warranty and support.
For a business or workstation, capacity can matter more than peak speed. A stable 64GB kit may deliver more value than an ultra-fast 32GB kit if your applications routinely exceed 32GB.

The financial takeaway
AI infrastructure changed the opportunity cost of memory manufacturing. HBM and server demand are not identical to desktop RAM demand, but they compete for investment, capacity and attention within the same industry. G.Skill’s warning captured the immediate retail effect; Micron’s results and forecast explained why the pressure could persist.
Consumers should budget for volatility, not assume either a permanent shortage or an imminent collapse in prices. Buy when the performance or capacity benefit is real, delay when the purchase is optional, and make the decision using a current, compatible listing rather than a viral historical price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Micron and G.Skill make a joint announcement about RAM prices?
No. G.Skill issued its own December 16, 2025 pricing statement. Micron’s information came through its December 17 earnings release and CEO comments; the available evidence does not show a coordinated joint statement.
