Reported Micro Center listings briefly put the Radeon RX 9070 XT at $699.99 and the Radeon RX 9070 at $649.99 before AMD announced official pricing. Those numbers were alarming, but they were not AMD’s final U.S. prices. On February 28, 2025, AMD announced a $599 suggested price for the RX 9070 XT and $549 for the RX 9070.
For buyers, the episode is a useful reminder: a retailer’s pre-launch product page can show provisional data, not a confirmed MSRP.
What Micro Center reportedly listed
The early Micro Center listings were reported by secondary outlets and were later removed. They should not be treated as an AMD announcement.

The reported range itself was a warning sign. A premium partner card can legitimately cost more than a reference-style model, but prices above $1,000—and cases in which a non-XT card appeared more expensive than an RX 9070 XT—were difficult to interpret as normal launch pricing. Tom’s Hardware reported the early listings and their inconsistencies.

Why the starting prices caused concern
A $699.99 RX 9070 XT would have been only about $49 below Nvidia’s announced $749 RTX 5070 Ti. The reported $649.99 RX 9070 would also have been approximately $100 more expensive than the $549 RTX 5070.
That mattered because AMD’s appeal in this segment was expected to depend heavily on value. Pricing the XT near Nvidia’s higher-tier model would have reduced that advantage, while pricing the regular RX 9070 above the RTX 5070 would have made its position harder to explain.
The comparison was not a promise that AMD had to match older products. AMD had positioned the new cards against previous Radeon models such as the RX 7900 GRE and RX 7800 XT, but newer architecture, performance, memory, and manufacturing costs can justify a higher price. The issue was that the reported numbers would have changed the cards’ market position and raised the performance-per-dollar standard buyers should demand.
Why the listings looked provisional
Several details made the numbers weak evidence of final pricing:
- AMD had not yet announced prices. The retailer pages appeared before the manufacturer’s official launch information.
- The listings were removed. A pulled pre-launch page is not the same as a confirmed price announcement.
- The spread was unusually broad. A range from roughly $650 to $1,100 suggested that different types of data may have been mixed together.
- Some model relationships looked illogical. Brand, cooler, and factory-overclock differences can explain some variation, but they do not automatically explain every extreme price.
Retailers commonly create product records before launch. Those records may contain provisional prices, incomplete distributor information, or internal placeholders. That is an informed interpretation of the evidence—not a confirmed explanation of Micro Center’s internal system.
The safest rule is to distinguish a genuine product record from a verified price. A page can have the correct GPU name and specifications while still carrying a temporary value.
AMD’s official prices were lower
AMD announced its U.S. suggested pricing on February 28, 2025:

AMD’s official launch material is available in its February 28, 2025 announcement.
The $599 RX 9070 XT was therefore $100 below the reported $699.99 starting placeholder. It also restored a meaningful gap versus the $749 RTX 5070 Ti. The RX 9070’s $549 price matched the announced RTX 5070 MSRP, rather than exceeding it by the roughly $100 implied by the early listing.
MSRP is not the same as the price you can buy
AMD’s announced price is a reference point, not a guarantee that every model will be available at that amount. Buyers should separate three different figures:
- AMD’s suggested launch price: the manufacturer’s U.S. pricing reference.
- A board partner’s advertised price: the amount charged for a specific card with its own cooler, clock speeds, power limits, size, and warranty terms.
- The real purchase price: what is actually in stock for the buyer’s store, location, shipping method, and date.
Premium cards with larger coolers, factory overclocks, or upgraded components can cost more than $599 without proving that AMD raised its MSRP. Conversely, a $599 listing is not useful if it is out of stock or restricted to a particular store.
Later retail reporting found RX 9070 XT models selling above AMD’s launch price, including examples around $799 and reported markups of roughly $70 to $130 during one period. That supports the broader concern about street pricing, but it does not validate the original Micro Center placeholders. A later markup and an early provisional listing are separate pieces of evidence.

1. Confirm the exact card
Do not compare only the words “RX 9070 XT.” Check the manufacturer, cooler design, card length and thickness, factory overclock, power limit, included warranty, and connector placement. A premium model may justify some additional cost, but the difference should be visible in the specifications and ownership experience.
2. Check local availability and purchase conditions
Micro Center pricing can depend on the selected store and whether the item is available for in-store pickup. “Original price,” “sale price,” “online price,” and “in-store price” are not interchangeable. A product page may also remain indexed after inventory or pricing changes.

Before traveling or budgeting for the purchase, verify the exact branch, stock status, pickup restrictions, taxes, and expiration of any promotion.

3. Budget for the rest of the system
AMD’s reference specifications for the RX 9070 XT include 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a 256-bit memory interface, up to 640GB/s of memory bandwidth, 64MB of Infinity Cache, 304W total board power, PCIe 5 support, DisplayPort 2.1a, HDMI 2.1b, two 8-pin power connectors, and a recommended 750W power supply. AMD’s reference specification sheet notes that partner cards can differ.
That means the card’s advertised price may not be the complete upgrade cost. Check whether your current power supply is suitable, whether the card fits your case, and whether you need a new display cable or other hardware. Partner-board requirements can exceed the reference configuration.
4. Compare based on your use case
The launch-price frame was:

That price table is useful for positioning, not for declaring a universal performance winner. Real results depend on the game, resolution, ray-tracing settings, upscaling, frame generation, power limits, and driver version. Buyers who prioritize ray tracing, Nvidia-specific software, CUDA-dependent applications, or particular creator workloads may value Nvidia differently even when the Radeon card is cheaper.
What the episode means for GPU buyers
The reported $699.99 RX 9070 XT price was a legitimate reason to question AMD’s value positioning. The reported $649.99 RX 9070 price was arguably even more troubling against the $549 RTX 5070 and the final $549 AMD price.

The inconsistent range, removed pages, and missing official announcement made the figures provisional. AMD’s final $599 XT price materially changed the value calculation.
When evaluating a future launch, wait for three confirmations before treating a price as real: the manufacturer’s official MSRP or SEP, a specific board-partner model, and an actual in-stock listing at the retailer and location where you intend to buy. That approach prevents an alarming placeholder—or an unusually expensive premium card—from becoming your assumption about the whole product family.
