Meta’s standalone AI chatbot app is no longer merely a plan. Meta launched the first version for iOS and Android on April 29, 2025. It began as a separate home for Meta AI’s text, voice and image features, then expanded during 2026 into a broader assistant for search, recommendations, shopping, research, planning and selected connected tasks.

The app is a genuine alternative to standalone services such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity—but it is not independent of Meta. Its main advantages come from the same ecosystem that creates its biggest privacy, availability and personalization trade-offs.

What was originally reported?

The original report described Meta’s intention to create a dedicated app for Meta AI instead of relying only on integrations inside Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. The Information reported that Meta wanted a direct consumer-AI destination that could compete more visibly with ChatGPT and other standalone assistants. A separate app also gave Meta more room for voice, image, recommendation and future assistant features than a chatbot embedded inside a social or messaging interface.

That report is now historical context. Meta confirmed the product launch in its April 29, 2025 announcement.

When did Meta launch the app?

  • April 29, 2025: Meta launched the first standalone Meta AI app for iOS and Android.
  • Initial experience: text and voice conversations, image generation and editing, a Discover feed, continuity with meta.ai and support for Meta’s AI glasses.
  • Initial voice markets: Meta listed the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand for voice-conversation availability.
  • 2026: Meta expanded the app with newer models, multimodal assistance, shopping, research, planning and task-oriented features.

Availability is not necessarily identical across countries, accounts, devices or rollout stages. “The app exists” and “every advertised feature is available to you” are separate claims.

What can Meta AI do?

The standalone app has developed beyond a basic question-and-answer chatbot. Meta has described the following capabilities, although individual features may be limited by market and timing.

Text and voice conversations

Users can chat with Meta AI by text or voice. Meta has emphasized conversational voice interaction and continuity between the phone app, website and compatible AI glasses.

Image creation and editing

Meta AI can generate and edit images, making the app relevant to users who want to create social posts, visual concepts, mood boards or other graphics without opening a separate image tool. Meta also announced its Muse Image model in July 2026. One feature involving references to public Instagram accounts was subsequently removed after user feedback, illustrating that product announcements can change after launch.

See Meta’s Muse Image announcement and update for the company’s description of that feature.

Web search, recommendations and research

Meta AI can search for information, summarize material and help with recommendations. Meta’s product direction is distinctive because recommendations may incorporate public content from its platforms, including posts, Reels, creators and community discussions.

That can be useful for discovering places, products or ideas that are actively discussed on Meta’s services. It also means the result may reflect the quality, popularity and biases of social content rather than a neutral database.

Shopping assistance

Meta has described shopping assistance involving Facebook Marketplace and web listings. This could help users compare products, identify options or plan purchases, but AI-generated shopping recommendations should not be treated as objective financial advice. Check the seller, price, availability, return policy and product details yourself before paying.

Planning and recurring tasks

In July 2026, Meta described features for research, planning, recurring briefings, slide creation, mood boards and selected connections to calendars and email. These capabilities move Meta AI toward an agentic assistant: a system that can use connected tools and handle parts of a multi-step task.

That does not mean Meta AI operates fully autonomously everywhere. Meta described staged rollouts in selected markets, and users should review permissions and confirm important actions—particularly for purchases, travel, health, financial decisions and calendar or email changes.

Which models power Meta AI?

Meta announced Muse Spark in April 2026 and said it powered the Meta AI app and website before expanding to other Meta surfaces. Meta later announced Muse Spark 1.1 for newer planning, research, scheduling and task-completion functions.

These are Meta’s own descriptions of its models and capabilities, not independent rankings. The available evidence does not justify declaring Meta AI universally better or worse than ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or another assistant.

Meta has also been integrating Muse Spark and related AI systems across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads. Its Muse Spark announcement describes the broader product strategy.

How is Meta AI different from ChatGPT and Gemini?

Factor Meta AI Other standalone assistants
Distribution Available through a dedicated app, website and Meta’s social and messaging products Usually centered on an AI-first app or website
Social context Can use public Meta content and recommendations in relevant experiences Typically built around the provider’s own search, software or knowledge ecosystem
Voice and camera Strong emphasis on voice, visual assistance and Meta AI glasses Capabilities vary by product and device
Hardware Acts as a companion for compatible Meta AI glasses Generally less tied to Meta hardware
Privacy trade-off More closely connected to a large social-account ecosystem May be preferable to users seeking a more platform-neutral assistant
Pricing Core access and premium plans may vary by feature and market Plans and limits differ by provider and require separate verification

ChatGPT is a major AI-first alternative at chatgpt.com. Gemini may be a natural choice for someone deeply invested in Google services, while Claude offers another separate assistant ecosystem for writing and analysis workflows. Perplexity may appeal to users whose priority is web-oriented answers with linked sources. Those are fit differences, not claims that one service wins every task.

Is Meta AI free?

The original standalone-app announcement did not describe a mandatory subscription for core access. However, 2026 reporting indicated that Meta was testing or selling paid consumer tiers.

Bloomberg reported on May 27, 2026 that Meta One Plus was priced at $7.99 per month and Meta One Premium at $19.99 per month. The reported tiers were associated with greater capacity or more advanced functions, including image and video generation or extended reasoning. These prices and names should be treated as reported, market-specific information—not a universal, permanent Meta price list.

The Information also reported that Meta was working on a paid version of its assistant and noted that plans could change. Meta’s business rationale is straightforward: more capable models and agentic features require substantial computing resources. A paid tier could help offset those costs while allowing Meta to keep a basic version widely available.

The strategic tension is that Meta benefits from broad adoption. Charging for too much functionality could weaken the distribution advantage created by placing Meta AI across products used by billions of people.

Why does Meta want a standalone app?

The app gives Meta a direct relationship with consumers who may not use Meta AI inside a message or social feed. Mark Zuckerberg indicated during Meta’s Q1 2025 earnings call that the standalone experience was particularly important in the United States, where WhatsApp is not the dominant messaging platform it is in many other regions. The earnings-call transcript provides that strategic context.

A standalone app also lets Meta combine several experiences in one destination:

  • AI chat and voice interaction;
  • image creation and editing;
  • public-content recommendations;
  • shopping and Marketplace assistance;
  • continuity across web, phone and glasses; and
  • planning or task-oriented workflows.

Meta’s advantage is therefore less about offering only another text box and more about connecting an assistant to its distribution, social content and hardware.

Privacy and trust considerations

Standalone does not mean independent

The app is separate as an interface, but it remains a Meta product. Its value can increase when it connects to Meta accounts, social content, devices and other services. Users who want a platform-neutral assistant may regard that integration as a disadvantage rather than a benefit.

Public content is not the same as private chat

Meta has described using public posts, Reels, creators and community discussions to help with recommendations. That is different from saying that every private message or conversation is used in the same way. Do not collapse public social content, information you choose to share with Meta products and private chats into one category.

Incognito chats have a specific meaning

Meta says Incognito chats are available for conversations users want to keep separate from their broader Meta context. That is a useful control, but it should not be interpreted as a blanket guarantee about every form of data processing. Read the current in-app explanations, privacy controls and account settings before sharing sensitive information.

Connected accounts increase the stakes

If calendar or email connections are offered in your market, inspect the permissions carefully. Review what the assistant can read, whether it can create or modify items, how long access lasts and how to revoke it. AI-generated plans and summaries can contain mistakes even when the underlying data is accurate.

Who should try Meta AI?

  • Meta-heavy users: People who already spend time on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger or Threads may benefit from continuity.
  • AI-glasses owners: The app is the companion hub for compatible Meta AI glasses, making it more useful than a generic chatbot for hands-free and camera-based interaction.
  • Marketplace shoppers: Users who want help browsing social listings may value the connection to Facebook Marketplace.
  • Voice- and image-focused users: Meta’s product direction emphasizes spoken interaction, visual assistance and image creation.
  • Users seeking a neutral assistant: People uncomfortable with Meta-linked personalization may prefer ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or another provider.
  • Privacy-sensitive users: Anyone unwilling to connect social accounts, email, calendars or wearable devices should keep those integrations disabled.

What readers should not assume

  1. “Standalone” means separate from Meta. It means a separate destination, not an independent company or data ecosystem.
  2. Every feature is available worldwide. Meta’s announcements describe selected-market and staged rollouts.
  3. Announced features are permanent. Meta removed one Muse Image feature after feedback.
  4. The app is only a text chatbot. Voice, images, shopping, research and planning are now part of the product direction.
  5. Reported subscription prices apply everywhere. The $7.99 and $19.99 figures came from Bloomberg reporting dated May 27, 2026.
  6. Agentic means fully autonomous. Task-oriented features still require permissions, availability checks and human review.
  7. Recommendations are objective. Social posts, creators, Reels and Marketplace listings can influence what Meta AI presents.

Meta AI timeline

Date Development

April 8, 2026 Meta announced Muse Spark and said it powered the Meta AI app and website.
May 12, 2026 Meta described expanded voice, live visual assistance and shopping features.
June 15, 2026 Meta announced Facebook AI Mode using Meta AI and public content across its services.
July 7, 2026 Meta announced Muse Image for Meta AI.
July 24, 2026 Meta announced planning, recurring tasks, research, slides and connected-app functions, with rollout limits.
May 27, 2026 Bloomberg reported the $7.99 and $19.99 consumer subscription tiers.

Bottom line

Meta is no longer merely planning a standalone AI chatbot app. It launched one in April 2025 and is using it as a central hub for a broader consumer assistant strategy spanning conversation, voice, images, social recommendations, shopping, AI glasses and selected task execution.

It is most compelling for people already invested in Meta’s ecosystem or its AI glasses. Users who want a platform-neutral assistant, clearer enterprise controls or less social-data integration may be better served by another provider. In every market, check the features and price shown in your own app, and review AI-generated recommendations before acting on them.
