Short answer: The reported price reduction was broadly accurate. In August 2025, reports said Meta had lowered the expected price of its display-equipped smart glasses, then codenamed “Hypernova,” to about $800. Meta later launched the product in the United States as Meta Ray-Ban Display for a $799 starting price, including the Meta Neural Band wrist controller.
The product launched on September 30, 2025, so it is no longer an upcoming device. However, $799 is a starting price—not confirmation that every configuration, prescription option, or market will cost the same.
What happened to the reported $800 price?
The original $800 figure came from pre-launch reporting, not a Meta announcement. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported in August 2025 that Meta had reduced the expected price of its first display-equipped smart glasses from an earlier rumored range of roughly $1,000 to $1,400 to about $800. The reported strategy involved accepting lower margins to encourage early adoption.

Those earlier figures were reported expectations, not an official Meta MSRP. For that reason, it would be inaccurate to say Meta formally cut a confirmed $1,400 product to $800.

Hypernova became Meta Ray-Ban Display
Hypernova was a reported internal codename. Celeste was another name associated with the project in pre-launch coverage. The commercial product launched under the name Meta Ray-Ban Display, not Hypernova.
It is also distinct from Meta’s displayless products, including Ray-Ban Meta camera-and-audio glasses and the lower-priced Meta Glasses line.

What can the display do?
Meta positions the glasses as display-equipped AI glasses, not as a full augmented-reality headset. The display can support short, glanceable interactions such as:
- Viewing Meta AI answers and visual information
- Reading or replying to messages
- Seeing live captions and translations
- Previewing photos
- Following walking directions
- Checking music information and playback controls
- Receiving notifications without taking out a phone
- Supporting hands-free communications
The right-lens display is monocular and relatively narrow. It is therefore better understood as a small information panel than as the broad, spatially anchored holographic field associated with full AR glasses such as Meta’s Orion prototype.

How the Neural Band works
The Neural Band uses electromyography, or EMG, to detect electrical signals associated with muscle activity at the wrist. It translates subtle finger and hand movements into commands, including gestures such as swiping and pinching. Meta has also promoted neural handwriting for messaging features.
This is not mind-reading or direct brain-computer control. The band senses muscle activity and provides haptic feedback. It comes in three sizes and adds another device that must be fitted, charged, paired, and worn.

The glasses are not a completely standalone computer. Setup and many features require a supported phone, a Meta account, the Meta AI app, and wireless internet. Current Ray-Ban support materials list Android and iOS requirements, but the exact supported operating-system versions should be checked in the current Meta Ray-Ban Display FAQ.

Is Meta Ray-Ban Display worth $799?
The answer depends on whether the display and wrist-control system are the reason you want smart glasses.
Reasons to consider it
- It is Meta’s only listed product with a built-in visual display.
- It can surface directions, captions, translations, notifications, and other information without requiring a phone to be held in front of you.
- The Neural Band offers a gesture-based alternative to voice commands and physical controls.
- The Neural Band is included in the $799 starting package.
Reasons to choose a cheaper model or wait
- The display is monocular and not a full-field AR system.
- Battery life is limited compared with ordinary glasses, and official materials report different total case-runtime figures.
- At roughly 68g to 70g, the glasses are heavier than displayless Ray-Ban Meta models.
- The Neural Band adds charging, sizing, pairing, and another wearable to the system.
- Users who mainly want photos, calls, music, and voice AI may get better value from displayless models.
- Prescription lenses, lens choices, regional pricing, taxes, and insurance treatment can raise the final cost above the advertised starting price.
Bottom line on the “price cut”
The original headline was directionally right but is now outdated. The $800 figure began as a reported expected price for a product known internally as Hypernova or Celeste. Meta later launched that product as Meta Ray-Ban Display at $799 in the United States, including the Neural Band.
That confirms the approximate launch price, but not a formal discount from a previously announced $1,400 MSRP. The $799 premium pays for a new display-and-wristband interaction model—not simply better cameras or speakers. For buyers who want glanceable directions, captions, visual AI, and gesture control, it is a materially different product. For everyone else, Meta’s displayless glasses are likely the more economical choice.
