Meta reportedly invested about €3 billion—roughly $3.5 billion at the time—in EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear group that owns Ray-Ban, deepening a partnership behind Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Bloomberg reported on July 8, 2025, that the investment represented a stake of nearly 3%; Reuters reported that Meta could eventually raise its holding to about 5%. The reports describe a minority investment, not a purchase of Ray-Ban or control of its parent. The financial terms and any governance rights were not fully detailed in a public transaction announcement cited in those reports.
What did Meta reportedly buy?

| Stake | Nearly 3%, according to Bloomberg and Reuters |
| Reported value | About €3 billion, or approximately $3.5 billion at the time, according to Bloomberg |
| Possible future holding | Reuters reported Meta could increase its stake to about 5%; that was a possibility, not a confirmed completed purchase |
| Disclosure status | The initial reports cited people familiar with the matter and did not set out every purchase, voting, or governance term in a detailed public transaction filing |
Bloomberg’s July 8, 2025 report put the value at roughly €3 billion, equivalent to $3.5 billion at the time. Reuters reporting republished by Sahm Capital described the stake as nearly 3% and said Meta might eventually increase it to about 5%. Those reported figures should not be mistaken for a disclosed final ownership structure or evidence that Meta controls the company.
Why invest in an eyewear group?
Meta brings software, AI services, and consumer-device engineering; EssilorLuxottica brings capabilities that are difficult for a technology company to reproduce quickly: eyewear design, manufacturing, prescription expertise, established brands, and extensive retail and optical channels. The partnership gives Meta a way to put cameras, audio, and AI into frames consumers may already recognize and want to wear.
- Brands and social acceptance: Ray-Ban offers familiar styling, making the device less visibly experimental than purpose-built electronics.
- Manufacturing and optics: Glasses must fit comfortably, accommodate lenses, withstand daily use, and meet optical requirements. An experienced eyewear partner can help solve these problems.
- Retail and prescription reach: Established optical and retail channels can support fitting and prescription options as well as ordinary sunglass sales.
- A wider product pipeline: Working across brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley lets the companies target distinct styles and use cases, rather than relying on one Meta-branded frame.
The strategic inference is that Meta is seeking more durable alignment with a hardware and brand partner, not simply financing a supplier. The reported stake could give Meta a stronger financial interest in the relationship and a closer position in discussions about product development and scale. The initial reporting does not establish that the stake comes with specific production guarantees, design authority, or other contractual rights.

The partnership predates the investment
Meta and EssilorLuxottica were already working together on Ray-Ban Meta glasses before the reported share purchase. The screenless glasses pair conventional frames with cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers, smartphone connectivity, and Meta AI functions. The companies’ SEC-filed materials and Ray-Ban’s product information describe that collaboration.
The product range later expanded beyond Ray-Ban Meta to include sport-oriented Oakley Meta glasses and Meta Ray-Ban Display, which adds an in-lens display and is paired with a wrist-worn Meta Neural Band. EssilorLuxottica and Meta described their expanded portfolio in a September 2025 announcement. The companies have called Ray-Ban Meta the world’s best-selling AI glasses; that is their characterization, not an independently audited market ranking.
What the products show—and what they still depend on
Ray-Ban Meta: camera and audio without a lens display
Ray-Ban Meta is designed for hands-free photography and video, calls, audio, and voice interaction with Meta AI. It is not a standalone computer: Ray-Ban says setup and use require a compatible Android or iOS phone, the Meta AI app, a Meta account, and wireless internet access. Exact requirements and AI features vary by market and may change; check the Ray-Ban support FAQ for current regional details. Prescription options depend on model and market.

Oakley Meta: a different audience
Oakley Meta extends the collaboration toward sport-oriented styling, illustrating how the companies can use different eyewear brands to address different consumers. Axios reported U.S. launch-period pricing of $399 for Oakley Meta HSTN and $499 for an initial special edition; those are historical launch figures, not guaranteed current prices or universal prices for the line. See Axios’s launch coverage.
Meta Ray-Ban Display: a more ambitious, more complex device
The U.S. Ray-Ban product page lists a 600-by-600-pixel full-color display in one lens, a 12-megapixel camera, five microphones, open-ear speakers, and wrist-based controls through the Meta Neural Band. Ray-Ban lists a U.S. starting price of $799 and claims up to six hours of battery life for the glasses, or up to 24 hours with the charging case. These are manufacturer specifications and battery claims, not independent test results; price and availability can change. Details are on the official product page.
Why glasses are a different platform bet from VR
Virtual- and mixed-reality headsets can offer immersive displays, but their bulk and isolating nature make them better suited to particular settings than all-day wear for many people. AI glasses pursue a different role: quick, hands-free tasks while walking, commuting, shopping, traveling, taking photos, or making calls. A device worn on the face throughout the day could put an assistant closer to the user than a phone or headset does.

That opportunity is not the same as a smartphone replacement. Many glasses still rely on a paired phone, wireless connectivity, cloud services, and regular charging. Screenless models offer limited visual interaction; display models add weight, cost, and technical complexity. Meta’s filings discuss AI, wearables, privacy, data use, competition, and product liability among the company’s risks, and describe Meta Ray-Ban Display as a 2025 product with an integrated lens display (Meta’s 2025 annual filing).

Meta said in its second-quarter 2025 filing that Reality Labs revenue growth was driven in part by higher sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses. EssilorLuxottica executives also discussed sales of roughly two million pairs since launch and ambitions to increase annual production, figures that should be treated as company or executive statements rather than independently audited market totals. Meta’s filing provides the revenue-growth attribution; Cinco Días coverage reported the executive sales comments.
Sales growth does not yet make smart glasses a large part of EssilorLuxottica’s overall business. Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com said the category remained a small share of group sales even as it contributed to recent growth (Reuters coverage). For Meta, a popular device line is useful evidence that consumers will try AI glasses, but it does not prove that the category can deliver smartphone-scale adoption or profits.

What could go wrong for the strategy?
Privacy and public acceptance
Cameras and microphones on ordinary-looking glasses can unsettle bystanders and create disputes over recording in homes, workplaces, schools, or private venues. A recording indicator does not settle questions about consent, data use, or where recording is permitted. Meta identifies privacy, data protection, biometrics, AI, and product liability as risks in its annual filing; laws and expectations can differ by jurisdiction.
Battery, connectivity, and AI limits
Frequent camera use, calls, AI interactions, and weak connectivity can affect real-world battery life. Cloud-connected features may also depend on a phone, internet access, supported languages, and regional availability. A glasses interface is convenient only if its software works reliably in the user’s circumstances.

Fit, prescription options, and fashion risk
Eyewear has to fit faces and prescriptions, not just carry electronics. Lens thickness, frame weight, heat, camera placement, and comfort can constrain design. The partnership also ties technology to valuable consumer brands: a product seen as intrusive or awkward could create reputational risks for both partners.

- Discreet open-ear speakers let you enjoy rich audio quality, music and calls without losing the ambient sounds of your surroundings.
Competition and economics
Other companies are pursuing smart glasses and adjacent wearables, including Google’s work with Warby Parker, as reported by Reuters (Reuters coverage). A minority investment does not ensure that Meta wins against competitors, that the partnership produces cheaper devices, or that AI glasses become a profitable mass market. It is a substantial strategic commitment, not proof of an inevitable platform transition.
What the investment means for consumers and investors
For consumers, the investment is a signal that Meta intends to keep building glasses with an established eyewear partner; it is not a reason by itself to buy a model or expect a near-term phone replacement. Someone interested in camera, audio, calls, or hands-free AI should check whether the specific frame supports their prescription and is available in their country, then confirm phone, app, account, language, and network requirements. Someone primarily seeking an in-lens display should weigh the added cost and complexity against the value of visual information.
For investors, the stake links Meta more closely to a partner with brands, manufacturing, and optical and retail infrastructure. EssilorLuxottica may benefit if the category grows, but smart glasses remain small relative to its broader eyewear business, and the reported transaction terms do not disclose all governance or commercial arrangements. Meta’s investment therefore strengthens its position in AI eyewear without resolving the key questions of consumer acceptance, privacy, technical performance, competitive pressure, or long-term economics.
