Meizu has not been proven to have ended smartphone production worldwide overnight. The more accurate picture is that Meizu/DreamSmart reportedly paused new, self-developed smartphone hardware projects in China in February 2026 and is redirecting resources toward AI, Flyme software, and automotive technology. A later agreement would transfer the entire Flyme software business—including Flyme Auto and cross-device Flyme OS—to ECARX if the transaction closes.
For buyers and existing owners, that means Meizu phones may remain available in selected markets, but future hardware, updates, repairs, and resale value deserve more caution than they did before.
What Meizu actually changed
February 2026 reports described a suspension of new domestic smartphone hardware development at Meizu. That is materially different from a confirmed, immediate worldwide shutdown of every Meizu phone operation.
Some coverage reported that the smartphone business was expected to formally exit the market in March 2026, but that timing came from people familiar with the matter rather than a clearly identified public announcement confirming a global end to production. Several facts complicate the simple headline:
- Meizu announced an “All in AI” strategy on February 29, 2024.
- It still launched five smartphones and new wearables internationally on May 20, 2025.
- Existing inventory and already planned international distribution may continue even if new domestic phone development has stopped.
- The strongest evidence concerns new hardware research and development, not a confirmed global cancellation of all sales or support.
So the practical conclusion is that Meizu is stepping back from its traditional phone business, especially in China, while trying to make Flyme a broader software platform.
Meizu’s 2025 global launch included the Mblu 22, Mblu 22 Pro, Note 22, Note 22 5G, and Note 22 Pro 5G, with initial availability planned for markets including Russia, Spain, Malaysia, and Vietnam before expansion to more than 30 countries and regions. Why Meizu is moving toward AI and automotive software
Competing in smartphones requires a costly and continuous hardware cycle: new designs, processors, cameras, displays, carrier certification, distribution, marketing, repairs, and software support. In China, Meizu faces established rivals including Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Honor.

Automotive software offers a different commercial model. A vehicle manufacturer can license, customize, integrate, and support cockpit software across multiple models over a longer product cycle. A successful platform can also reach drivers through several vehicle brands without requiring its owner to sell a new phone to every customer each year.
That strategy fits Geely’s broader automotive interests and ECARX’s focus on vehicle computing, digital cockpits, and intelligent-car systems. It also explains why Flyme Auto has become more important than the number of Meizu phones sold in a single quarter.

DreamSmart describes Flyme AIOS as a connective layer linking smartphones, smart glasses, and intelligent cars. What is included in the Flyme ecosystem?
- Flyme OS and Flyme AIOS: Mobile and cross-device software associated with Meizu phones, wearables, and other devices.
- Flyme Auto: Automotive cockpit and infotainment software used in supported vehicles.
- Flyme Link: Phone-to-car and cross-device connectivity.
- Flyme XR and Flyme AR: Software associated with smart-glasses and augmented-reality experiences.
- AI services: Features such as voice interaction, translation, recommendations, and context-aware cross-device functions.
These names describe related parts of a platform strategy, not interchangeable products. Flyme Auto is not simply a phone operating system installed in a car, and it is not generally a universal aftermarket app that any driver can add to any vehicle.

ECARX said in June 2026 that Flyme Auto had been deployed in more than 2 million production vehicles across multiple original-equipment manufacturers. That is a company-reported deployment figure; it should not automatically be read as 2 million active users or independently audited market share.
Earlier Meizu material reported Flyme Auto across 22 vehicle models and more than 600,000 users as of March 2025. Those earlier and later figures measure different points in time and should not be combined as though they were the same metric. Meizu’s 2025 Flyme Auto material.
ECARX also said the Flyme software business had achieved profitability on 2026 management accounts, supported by licensing, custom development, and intelligent-cockpit deliveries. Again, this is a company statement rather than an independent financial audit presented in the announcement.

The potential advantages of automotive software include:
- Longer relationships with automakers than a typical annual phone upgrade cycle.
- Licensing and integration revenue from multiple vehicle programs.
- Customization and support contracts.
- Deployment across several brands and vehicle models.
- A closer fit with Geely’s connected-mobility strategy.
The risks are also different. Automotive contracts can be concentrated among a small number of customers, vehicle launches take time, and software revenue depends on successful integrations and production volumes.
What ECARX agreed to buy
On June 22, 2026, ECARX announced a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of a newly carved-out entity containing the entire Flyme software portfolio. The included platforms are Flyme Auto and the cross-device Flyme OS business.
- Buyer: ECARX, through an acquisition entity.
- Sellers: Wuhan Xingji Meizu Technology, Zhuhai Meizu Technology, and Hubei Xingji Meizu Group.
- Equity acquisition consideration: RMB1.8 billion, approximately US$266 million according to ECARX.
- Planned post-closing capital injection: RMB200 million.
- Proposed total when both amounts are included: RMB2 billion.
- Expected structure: Flyme would operate as an independent ECARX software division.
The RMB1.8 billion purchase consideration and the additional RMB200 million capital increase are separate figures. The transaction agreement describes RMB2 billion when both are included. Read the filed acquisition agreement.
The acquisition was announced as a definitive agreement, not as a completed transaction. Closing remained subject to conditions including due diligence, intellectual-property transfer, talent-retention arrangements, and other customary requirements. It is therefore more accurate to say that Flyme is expected to move to ECARX if the deal closes, rather than that ECARX already owns the business.

What happens to existing Meizu phones?
There is no confirmed evidence that existing Flyme phones will suddenly stop working. ECARX said existing Flyme OS operators would continue receiving updates “for the foreseeable future,” subject to the transaction completing. That is a company commitment, not a defined lifetime-support period or a promise of a specific number of Android upgrades.
Owners should distinguish among:
- Security updates: Patches addressing known vulnerabilities.
- Major system upgrades: New Android or Flyme versions, which may be less predictable after hardware development slows.
- App compatibility: Banking, streaming, messaging, and Google-certified apps may have separate requirements.
- Cloud services: Account, backup, synchronization, and device-finding services could have different policies from firmware updates.
- Warranty and repairs: Local service networks, batteries, screens, and other parts may become harder to obtain.
- Regional firmware: China-market and international ROMs may receive different software, services, and support.
“Updates for the foreseeable future” should not be interpreted as a guaranteed support schedule. The end of new phone development could eventually reduce update frequency, accessory availability, repair inventory, and regional customer service even if current devices continue operating normally.

Possibly, depending on the country, model, and remaining inventory. Existing stock may continue to be sold, and products already in international distribution channels may reach selected markets. That does not mean a new generation of Meizu phones will arrive on a predictable schedule.
Before buying, check all of the following:
- Official regional availability: Confirm that the model is sold through an authorized channel in your country.
- ROM and Google services: Verify Google Play, notifications, banking apps, and other services on the exact regional version.
- Network compatibility: Check carrier bands, 5G support, VoLTE, eSIM availability, and Android Auto if relevant.
- Warranty and returns: Imported phones may have no local warranty or may require international shipping for repairs.
- Parts and service: Check whether batteries, screens, cases, and repair centers are available.
- Software expectations: Buy only if the current software experience is acceptable without assuming several future major upgrades.
- Price versus alternatives: A low import price may not compensate for weaker support, difficult repairs, or poor resale value.
Flyme’s automotive and wearable advantages matter most to buyers already invested in compatible vehicles or devices. They are not, by themselves, a reason to overlook carrier, warranty, or software-support limitations.

- Back up photos, contacts, messages, documents, and authenticator codes.
- Record the exact model, region, ROM, and Flyme version.
- Save legitimate locally available firmware and recovery information.
- Check whether essential apps depend on Google certification or regional services.
- Confirm warranty terms and local repair options while they remain available.
- Avoid unofficial firmware unless you understand the risks of data loss, failed updates, security problems, and device bricking.
- Do not assume that Flyme Auto’s continued expansion guarantees equivalent long-term support for phone hardware.
Should you buy a Meizu phone now?
It can make sense for an enthusiast who values Flyme’s interface, accepts support uncertainty, and has verified local compatibility. It is a weaker choice for anyone seeking predictable multi-year updates, broad carrier support, easy repairs, strong resale value, or a clear domestic warranty.

For a US buyer in particular, an imported Meizu phone should be treated as a specialist purchase rather than a normal mainstream handset. Confirm Google services, carrier bands, eSIM requirements, banking-app compatibility, Android Auto, returns, and warranty coverage before paying. Apple, Samsung, and Google generally offer a more predictable officially supported ecosystem in the United States, although they will not replicate Meizu’s Flyme experience.
Flyme Auto also should not be treated as a universal aftermarket product. Availability depends on the automaker, model, country, hardware configuration, and software deployment. Buyers interested in it should evaluate a specific supported vehicle rather than assuming any Geely-family car can receive every Flyme feature.
What this means for Meizu fans
Potential benefits
- More resources devoted to Flyme software and AI features.
- Broader integration among phones, cars, glasses, and other devices.
- Greater automotive scale through ECARX and multiple vehicle partners.
- Potentially more durable software revenue than a small standalone phone business could generate.
Potential drawbacks
- Fewer or no new Meizu phones in some markets.
- Less choice for buyers who valued Meizu hardware design.
- Uncertainty over update frequency, accessories, repairs, and resale value.
- Greater dependence on automaker partnerships and licensing.
- A shift in product priorities from phone users toward vehicle manufacturers.
Bottom line
Meizu’s phone identity is being reduced, but its technology is not simply disappearing. The company reportedly paused new domestic smartphone hardware development while making AI, Flyme, and automotive software more central. The later ECARX agreement makes the story bigger than a phone shutdown: it is also a proposed transfer of Flyme into an automotive-software business.
Existing phones should continue to work, and ECARX said updates would continue for the foreseeable future if the deal closes. But no fixed support period has been promised, and a global end to all Meizu smartphone sales has not been conclusively established. Buyers should purchase only after checking regional compatibility, warranty coverage, repairs, and their tolerance for long-term support risk.
