MainStreet Bancshares disclosed a 2025 third-party vendor incident that affected about 4.65% of its customer base. A customer notice described payment-card data—including cardholder names, card numbers, and expiration dates—in a merchant payment-card environment. MainStreet said its own IT systems and networks were not compromised and that it had found no unauthorized transactions or transfers when it reported the incident. Those statements describe the company’s findings at the time; they are not a guarantee against later card misuse.
What happened?
MainStreet Bancshares said it learned in March 2025 that an outside vendor connected to the bank’s core operations had been compromised. The company said it began an incident response, investigated, and stopped activity with the vendor. A customer notification filed with Massachusetts authorities identified the affected environment as a merchant’s payment-card environment. The bank’s SEC filing said MainStreet’s own IT systems and networks were not compromised.
A vendor incident can expose information relating to a bank’s customers without the bank’s online-banking systems or core network being breached. Here, the available disclosures describe payment-card information in a third-party merchant environment—not a reported compromise of MainStreet online-banking passwords or bank-account balances.

The available disclosures do not describe an exposure of online-banking passwords or PINs.
How many customers were affected?
MainStreet said its investigation identified personally identifiable information belonging to approximately 4.65% of its customer base on the vendor’s system. Its SEC filing did not give a precise number of affected people, so the percentage should not be converted into a customer count without a verified total and matching scope.

Were MainStreet accounts or bank systems breached?
According to the company’s SEC filing, MainStreet’s own IT systems and networks were not compromised or affected. The bank also reported that, as of its disclosure, no unauthorized transactions had been executed and no money had been transferred to unknown or unauthorized individuals. It said customers could continue transacting with the company.
These are MainStreet’s reported findings, not a separately published forensic conclusion from a regulator. They also describe the status reported at the time: payment-card details can potentially be misused later, so affected customers should still watch transactions and act on anything unfamiliar.

What affected customers should do
- Follow the bank’s card-replacement instructions. SecurityWeek reported that MainStreet advised potentially affected customers to visit a branch for a replacement card or request that one be mailed. If you received a notice, use its instructions or contact the bank through an official channel. If you think your card may be affected but received no notice, ask MainStreet to check rather than assuming either way.
- Block or replace a card if needed. If you see suspicious activity, or cannot promptly confirm whether your card remains at risk, contact the bank using its verified lost-card or fraud channel and ask whether the card should be blocked or replaced. If a replacement has not arrived, ask the bank how to secure the existing card in the meantime.
- Activate the replacement and handle the old card as directed. Follow the bank’s activation instructions and destroy or disable the old card only as instructed. Do not assume receiving a new card automatically updates every payment service.
- Update recurring payments and wallets. Check subscriptions, utilities, online merchants, and digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal. A changed card number may cause a recurring bill to be declined; update the payment method through each service’s official app or website.
- Review card and checking-account activity. Look for unfamiliar purchases, including small transactions that may be used to test a card. Continue monitoring after replacement because a new card reduces the usefulness of old details but cannot guarantee that exposed data will not be attempted.
- Report suspicious transactions promptly. Contact MainStreet through an official number or branch and follow the issuer’s dispute process. Keep records of the transaction, date, and any case or confirmation number.
- Treat unexpected calls and messages cautiously. Do not give a caller or texter your password, PIN, one-time verification code, or full card details. Do not use links or phone numbers in unsolicited messages; contact the bank using a number on its official site or card.
How to contact MainStreet Bank
MainStreet’s official customer-service page lists 888-297-3416 for lost or stolen debit cards, 800-237-8990 for its fraud-department callback function, and 800-290-7893 for card activation or PIN updates. Phone numbers and procedures can change, so verify the current details on that page before calling. For an unfamiliar transaction or suspected fraud, use the bank’s official customer-service channels rather than replying to an unsolicited message.
Is a credit freeze or credit monitoring necessary?
The disclosures reviewed describe payment-card information and say MainStreet had no evidence that Social Security numbers or MainStreet account numbers were involved. For that reported exposure, replacing or blocking a card and monitoring transactions are the most directly relevant steps. A credit freeze may be reasonable if you receive a separate notice involving identity data, see signs of identity theft, or want the additional protection; the available disclosures do not establish that every affected customer needs credit monitoring.

What remains unknown?
The SEC filing does not name the outside vendor. The available records also do not establish the attacker’s identity, the attack technique, whether ransomware was involved, whether data was posted or sold, or whether the card data was actually used fraudulently. The reviewed disclosures give a percentage rather than an exact affected-customer count. They also do not establish whether every replacement card was issued automatically or only after a customer requested one. Avoid treating any of these unanswered points as confirmed.
