What the $899 Mac Studio deal included
AppleInsider reported the offer on August 21, 2025. The listed computer was an Amazon Renewed Premium Mac Studio with an Apple M2 Max chip: a 12-core CPU, 30-core GPU, 32GB unified memory and 512GB SSD. The article described the unit as $899 against a $1,999 original retail price and cited a one-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee.
That is a historical price, not confirmation that the same unit, seller, condition or protection is available now. The linked Amazon listing should be checked directly. Renewed is not the same as new or Apple Certified Refurbished, and listing details can change.

There was a separate M4 Max deal
The same 2025 article also reported $400 off a different Mac Studio sold through B&H: an M4 Max configuration with a 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 64GB memory and 1TB SSD. It was not the $899 model. The B&H product page most recently showed $2,899 and temporarily out of stock in the available research; that is not confirmation of current inventory or the past promotion.

Is an M2 Max Mac Studio still worth buying?
An M2 Max is not automatically obsolete. For many 4K video-editing projects, photo work, software development, music production, productivity and compatible local AI workloads, it can still be a capable desktop. Whether it suits a particular workload depends on the software, project size and memory demands.
The trade-off is age and configuration. The 2025 Mac Studio generation includes M4 Max and M3 Ultra options, according to Apple’s technical specifications. The M4 Max configuration starts with a 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB memory and 512GB SSD; higher configurations offer up to 128GB memory and 8TB storage. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 among the current model’s features. The M4 Max model supports up to five displays and includes HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, USB-A, an SDXC card slot, Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, according to Apple’s specifications.

For the renewed M2 Max, 32GB memory may be sufficient for many professional workflows, but 512GB of internal storage can be limiting if you keep video footage, photo libraries, sample libraries, virtual machines or local AI models on the computer. Plan for external storage if needed; do not assume the internal SSD is a routine user-upgrade. A Mac Studio is also just the computer: budget separately for a display, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, cables and any external drives.

- Match the configuration. Confirm M2 Max, 12-core CPU, 30-core GPU, 32GB memory and 512GB SSD. Retail listings can combine multiple configurations or conditions.
- Read the condition and seller information. Check who sells and fulfills the unit, the cosmetic description and what is included. Do not treat Renewed Premium as Apple Certified Refurbished.
- Review return and guarantee terms. Confirm the actual return deadline and written coverage on the live listing. The one-year guarantee was cited in the 2025 report; verify whether it applies to the offer you are viewing.
- Check total cost. Confirm the price at checkout, applicable tax, shipping charges and delivery estimate. The advertised price may depend on a particular seller, inventory, condition selection or promotion.
- Ask about account and device restrictions. Make sure the computer has been erased and is not linked to another owner’s Apple Account or subject to organization management. Confirm that you can return it if activation or setup is blocked.
- Check what arrives. Verify the power cord and other listed accessories. A keyboard and mouse are generally not included with Mac Studio.
- Keep the purchase record. Save the listing and order details, including condition, seller, price and guarantee, in case the delivered item differs from what was advertised.
When to buy—and when to skip
Consider it at $899 only if the live offer really is the specified M2 Max configuration, the seller and return protection are acceptable, and renewed condition works for you. At that price, it could be compelling for a buyer who values desktop performance more than the newest chip and can work within 32GB memory and 512GB storage.

Skip or compare alternatives if the price has risen substantially, the seller or terms are unclear, you need more internal storage or Thunderbolt 5, or you require a new computer with Apple’s standard limited warranty. Compare the final price against current M4 Max offers and Apple Certified Refurbished inventory. Apple’s certified-refurbished listing describes inspection and function testing, repackaging, a one-year limited warranty and a 14-day return policy; availability and price vary, so check Apple’s current refurbished listing.
A lower-cost Mac mini may be enough for lighter workloads, while a MacBook Pro makes more sense if portability matters. If you compare refurbished systems, weigh the warranty, return window and condition along with the headline price.
