Apple’s M4 Mac launch day was Friday, November 8, 2024. The M4 iMac, M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini, and M4-family MacBook Pro became available for delivery and, at many locations, same-day store pickup. But “available today” did not mean every configuration was on every shelf: exact stock depended on the retailer, store, color, memory, storage, and time of day.
This is a historical guide to the November 8, 2024 launch. Prices, inventory, promotions, and trade-in values have changed since then.
What launched on November 8, 2024?
Apple staggered its announcements over three days, then released all three product families on the same retail date:

Could you really get an M4 Mac the same day?
Often, yes—but usually through a reserved pickup order rather than an assumption that a walk-in store had your preferred computer in stock. Apple Stores and selected Best Buy locations offered same-day pickup for various standard configurations on launch day. Availability was location- and SKU-specific.
Apple Store pickup
- Choose the exact Mac model and configuration online.
- Select “I’ll pick it up” at checkout.
- Enter your ZIP code.
- Choose a participating store and an available pickup date and time.
- Pay online and wait for the pickup confirmation before traveling to the store.
Apple could require a government-issued photo ID and the order number. Store inventory could change during checkout, so a product-family page showing availability was not proof that your chosen memory, storage, color, or chip option was ready for collection.
Apple’s launch-day availability reporting also noted an important limitation: build-to-order Macs—such as a model with additional memory, a larger SSD, or an unusual specification combination—generally required shipping instead of same-day pickup. Best Buy pickup
Best Buy also carried launch-day inventory for various M4 Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro configurations. The practical advantage was the chance to compare a sale price, trade-in promotion, and membership benefit in one transaction. The limitation was that inventory and eligible offers varied by store and configuration.

Apple versus Best Buy: Which was cheaper?
There was no universal winner. Apple offered the broadest configuration range and direct integration with Apple Trade In, education pricing, Apple financing, AppleCare+, and in-store support. Best Buy could be cheaper when a specific model had a sale price, a member discount, or an elevated trade-in promotion.
Compare the effective cost rather than the headline offer:
Effective cost = purchase price − trade-in credit − instant discount − applicable membership or rewards benefit
Then account for any membership fee, financing conditions, taxes, shipping, and the possibility that you could earn more by selling the old Mac privately. A retailer’s “up to” trade-in amount is not an automatic discount; it applies only to an eligible device in the stated condition.
What were the launch-period trade-in offers?
Apple Trade In
Apple Trade In was the simplest first-party option, but its quote was an estimate—not a guaranteed final value. For an accurate Mac estimate, Apple required the serial number. After receiving and inspecting the computer, Apple could reduce or eliminate the credit if the condition differed from the description or the device had damage or missing components.

For a purchase paid in full, Apple’s trade-in information says the credit is applied to the original payment method after Apple receives and verifies the old device. That means an online buyer may initially pay the full price and receive the trade-in credit later. Check Apple’s Trade In terms and current estimate for the applicable transaction.
Apple Trade In generally makes the most sense when convenience, a single retailer, and reduced selling effort matter more than maximum resale proceeds. A recent, high-spec Mac in excellent condition may bring more through a private sale, although that involves listing, negotiating, shipping, and payment risk.
Best Buy promotions
During the October–November 2024 launch period, reported Best Buy examples included trade-in values of up to $325 for an M2 Mac mini and up to $450 for a base-model M3 iMac. Coverage also reported member discounts of up to $100 on some qualifying purchases.
These were promotional examples, not universal or current guarantees. The actual value depended on the device, condition, offer dates, product eligibility, and membership status. Were there cash discounts on launch day?
Yes, but they were selective rather than broad discounts on every M4 Mac. Launch-week coverage reported:

Each offer applied to a specific SKU and date. Confirm the chip, memory, storage, color, seller, price before and after the discount, trade-in requirement, membership requirement, and expiration. Amazon listings also required checking whether the seller was Amazon or a marketplace seller and reviewing the applicable return terms.

Do not surrender the old computer until your data is safely on the new Mac. Use Apple’s built-in migration tools or another trusted backup method, then:
- Verify that important files, photos, passwords, and applications are available on the new Mac.
- Back up the old Mac.
- Sign out of iCloud.
- Disable Find My to remove Activation Lock.
- Erase the Mac only after migration is confirmed.
- Keep the serial number and trade-in order details.
Common causes of a reduced or rejected valuation include an incorrect serial number, overstated condition, liquid damage, a swollen battery, a cracked display, missing components, an enabled Activation Lock, or a device that has not been erased.

Mac mini
The M4 Mac mini’s $599 starting price was the lowest entry point, and the M4 Pro model started at $1,399. Education pricing was listed at $499 for M4 and $1,299 for M4 Pro for eligible buyers. But the mini requires a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and potentially other accessories. Add those costs before comparing it with an iMac or MacBook Pro.

iMac
The iMac included an integrated display and desktop accessories, making it the simplest all-in-one setup. It was less flexible for buyers who already owned a preferred monitor or wanted to replace individual components. The chosen configuration and display-mount option mattered.
MacBook Pro
The MacBook Pro was the self-contained portable option and offered M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max choices. It cost more than the entry-level Mac mini but made more sense for buyers who needed portability, a built-in display, or sustained professional workloads. For a stationary buyer, a desktop and monitor could offer better value.
Launch-day buying checklist
- Decide the exact model, chip, memory, storage, and color.
- Check Apple pickup inventory using your ZIP code.
- Check Best Buy for the identical configuration.
- Compare the final checkout price, not only the advertised discount.
- Request trade-in quotes from both retailers.
- Compare trade-in value with a realistic private-sale price.
- Calculate the complete Mac mini setup cost, including display and peripherals.
- Back up and migrate your old Mac before erasing or handing it over.
- Bring acceptable photo ID and the order number for Apple pickup.
- Wait for the pickup-ready notification.
- Review the seller’s return, financing, warranty, and AppleCare+ terms.
When buying immediately made sense—and when waiting was smarter
Buying on November 8 made sense if you needed a computer immediately, your exact configuration was in stock, or a valuable trade-in promotion was ending. It also suited buyers who wanted the newest generation and accepted paying close to launch pricing.

Selling a recent, high-spec Mac privately could also produce more money than a convenient trade-in.
The key distinction is simple: launch-day availability and launch-day value were different questions. The fastest way to get an M4 Mac was not necessarily the cheapest way to own one.
