Short answer: In 2024, the M1 MacBook Air was one of the best-value laptops for ordinary users—provided you bought it at a substantial discount. Its fast everyday performance, excellent battery life, silent fanless design, sharp display and dependable keyboard made it unusually easy to recommend to students, office workers, writers and web users. It was never the right laptop for everyone: multi-monitor users, gamers, Windows-software users and people doing sustained professional workloads needed something else.
In 2026, the same rule is stricter. The M1 Air still supports macOS Tahoe 26, but it is an older, used/refurbished product. Buy it only when the price is clearly below a comparable newer MacBook Air and the battery, warranty and return policy are acceptable.
The short verdict
- Good 2024 purchase: discounted, clearance or reputable refurbished stock, especially with 16 GB memory.
- Best for: web browsing, documents, schoolwork, video calls, streaming, light coding and light photo or video editing.
- Not for: two external monitors, demanding sustained exports or compilations, serious gaming, Windows-only applications or buyers who need the longest possible support runway.
- 2026 rule: compare the actual used price with a newer Air’s price after adding the value of a new battery, warranty and newer features.
The phrase “almost everyone” should mean most general-purpose users, not every professional or gamer.
What the M1 MacBook Air is
The M1 MacBook Air is the MacBook Air (M1, 2020), introduced in November 2020. Apple identifies it as model MacBookAir10,1; common part-number families include MGN63, MGN93, MGND3, MGN73, MGNA3 and MGNE3. Its core specifications are documented by Apple:

Memory and storage are integrated. You cannot add RAM or replace the internal SSD with a larger one later, so configuration matters more than it does on many Windows laptops.
Why it was such a strong 2024 value
Fast everyday performance
The M1 transformed what an entry-level MacBook Air felt like. Browser-heavy work, Office apps, video meetings, photo libraries, programming tools and ordinary creative applications generally felt immediate rather than merely adequate. Rosetta 2 allows many Intel Mac applications to run, although compatibility remains application-specific.
The important value argument was performance per watt: the Air delivered this responsiveness without a cooling fan. It was a dramatic step up from older Intel Air models without requiring a MacBook Pro.
Long battery life
Apple rates the M1 Air for up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing and 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback. Those are controlled Apple tests, not promises for every workload; brightness, browser choice, video calls, peripherals and battery health change results. In one independent continuous web-surfing test at 150 nits, Tom’s Guide recorded 14 hours 41 minutes. Treat that as context for that test, not a universal runtime.

Silent operation
Fanless cooling means no active fan noise during normal use—a genuine benefit in classrooms, libraries and quiet offices. The trade-off appears during repeated, prolonged work. Long 4K exports, large compilations or other sustained loads can cause the Air to reduce performance as it manages heat; Macworld describes this Air-versus-Pro limitation. Short bursts of demanding work are fine; workloads that stay heavy for hours favor a actively cooled MacBook Pro or desktop.
A still-good display and input system
The 13.3-inch Retina panel is sharp, color-capable and comfortable for documents and media. Its quality should not be confused with size: buyers who want more workspace may prefer a newer 15-inch Air. The keyboard, large trackpad and Touch ID remain among the Air’s practical strengths.
Which configuration should you buy?

Recommendation: choose 16 GB/512 GB when the premium is reasonable. Eight gigabytes is usable for ordinary work, but it leaves less room for dozens of tabs, large applications and future macOS versions. A 256 GB SSD works for cloud-first users who keep few photos, videos, games or development tools locally; everyone else should prefer 512 GB.
Price: compare the deal, not the launch number
The original U.S. starting price was $999, but that was not the relevant 2024 buying comparison. Apple had moved on to newer Air models, while retailers periodically cleared M1 stock. For example, Walmart listed an M1 Air around $699 in 2024; that was retailer-specific and temporary.

Use these bands rather than an evergreen price:
- Excellent deal: materially below a comparable new M2/M3 Air with similar memory and storage.
- Acceptable: substantially cheaper, with a credible return policy and known battery condition.
- Poor deal: close to newer hardware, where warranty, battery age, support runway and newer features justify paying more.
In 2026, prices vary rapidly by country, configuration and condition. Never compare an 8 GB/256 GB used listing with a newer 16 GB model as if they were equivalent.
The limitations that change the decision
Two ports
There are only two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports plus the headphone jack. Charging can consume one, leaving one immediately available. A USB-C hub or dock may be necessary for HDMI, USB-A, SD cards, Ethernet and external drives. Include that accessory cost in the laptop’s effective price.
One external display
Officially, the M1 Air supports one external display alongside its built-in screen. If you need two or more native external monitors, choose a different Mac or platform. DisplayLink adapters can require software, consume resources and introduce compatibility or wake-from-sleep issues; they are not equivalent to native support.

The built-in camera is 720p FaceTime HD, functional but behind newer Air cameras for frequent meetings, teaching or content creation. Charging is also through USB-C, so it occupies a port. Later Air models add MagSafe, leaving both USB-C ports free while charging.

Fixed memory and storage
There is no post-purchase RAM or internal SSD upgrade. A low-priced 8 GB/256 GB model can become frustrating if your workload grows, even though it is perfectly serviceable for light use.
Gaming and specialist software
Check the exact application before buying. Windows-only programs, some anti-cheat games, specialist CAD or engineering tools, unsupported drivers and GPU-heavy modern games may not work acceptably on macOS or Apple silicon. Rosetta 2 improves Intel-Mac application compatibility but is not a guarantee.
Who should buy the M1 Air?
- Students: long battery life, low noise and strong portability for notes, research and video calls.
- Office workers and writers: responsive browsers, documents and communications in a compact package.
- Travelers: efficient battery use and a durable, light chassis.
- First-time Mac buyers: a relatively inexpensive way to enter the macOS ecosystem, provided required software is available.
- Light creators: photo management, modest edits and short projects rather than sustained professional rendering.
Who should skip it?
- Developers relying on virtual machines, containers, emulators and several IDEs simultaneously.
- Video professionals, 3D artists and scientists with prolonged CPU/GPU workloads.
- Gamers or users dependent on Windows software.
- Anyone who requires two or more external displays.
- Buyers seeking a new machine to keep for five to seven years and unwilling to accept an aging battery or uncertain future support.
How to buy a used or refurbished M1 Air safely
- Check the battery: open System Settings → Battery, inspect Battery Health and maximum capacity, and look for “Service Recommended.” There is no universal pass/fail percentage; lower capacity should mean a lower price and a sooner service risk.
- Confirm ownership is clear: the seller must sign out of Apple Account/iCloud, disable Find My Mac and erase the machine. On first boot, Setup Assistant should appear so you can activate it with your account.
- Verify the model: use Apple menu → About This Mac and Apple’s model-identification page. Do not confuse it with the Intel 2020 Air or a MacBook Pro.
- Test everything: every key, trackpad, both USB-C ports, headphone jack, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, camera, microphone, speakers, Touch ID, display, hinge, charger and cable.
- Prefer protection: Apple Certified Refurbished, a reputable retailer or a seller offering a clear return window and buyer protection. Apple says its certified products undergo procedures based on finished-goods testing guidelines, but inventory is configuration- and availability-dependent.
Apple’s refurbished listings are at Apple Certified Refurbished. Third-party programs, including marketplace refurbishment, do not necessarily have identical inspection, warranty or return terms.

M1 Air versus a newer MacBook Air
Pay more for a newer Air when the price gap is modest and you value a new battery, full warranty, MagSafe, a newer camera, a larger-screen option, improved display support or the longest likely software runway. A new lower-cost Mac can also be financially safer than a heavily worn used M1, even if the M1 has a sharper value proposition at a deep discount.

The M1 remains compelling when it is substantially cheaper, has good battery health and meets your one-display, two-port workflow. Compare equivalent RAM and storage, not just chip names.
What changed since 2024?
Current as of August 16, 2026: the M1 Air remains compatible with macOS Tahoe 26. That means it is not obsolete, but Apple has not published a guaranteed end date for future macOS support. A major-release compatibility statement also does not guarantee every feature; Apple notes that Tahoe features can vary by Mac model, language, region and account (feature caveats).
Apple Intelligence availability likewise depends on the macOS release, language, region and supported hardware. Do not assume every future feature will run identically on an M1 Air.
The result is a change in buying posture: in 2024 the M1 Air could be the default value recommendation; in 2026 it is a price-sensitive refurb/used choice.
Bottom line
For ordinary users, the M1 MacBook Air was an exceptional 2024 value: fast, quiet, efficient and pleasant to use. Buy one today only when the discount compensates for its older webcam and chassis, two-port layout, one-display limit, fixed memory and storage, battery risk and shorter uncertain support horizon. If the M1 price approaches a newer Air—or your work is specialized—pay for the newer machine or choose Windows instead.
