Lyft Teen launched on February 9, 2026, allowing 13- to 17-year-olds to request rides without an accompanying adult. It is available only through a parent- or guardian-controlled Family Account—not through an ordinary adult Lyft account—and is rolling out market by market in the United States. Lyft announced availability in more than 200 major markets at launch, but families should check whether Lyft Teen appears in the parent’s Lyft app before making plans.
The program gives parents payment control, driver information, trip tracking and safety tools. It also means the adult remains responsible for fares, tips and additional charges, while the teen’s location and ride information are shared with the managing parent or guardian.
What changed with Lyft Teen?
Lyft’s general policy previously required passengers to be at least 18 unless accompanied by an adult. Lyft Teen is a formal exception for properly enrolled riders ages 13 through 17.
The change does not mean minors can safely use a parent’s regular Lyft account. A parent or legal guardian must create the Teen account, complete Lyft’s verification process, invite the teen and ensure the teen completes Lyft’s safety tutorial. Children under 13 are not eligible.

Lyft Teen launched in more than 200 major U.S. markets, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas–Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Miami. The rollout is phased, however, and availability can change. Lyft’s [current Teen Help Center guidance](https://help.lyft.com/hc/en-us/all/articles/7019860536-Lyft-Teen) says the app is the final authority on whether the feature is available locally.
How a parent sets up Lyft Teen
- Open the Lyft Rider app.
- Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Lyft Teen.
- Add a teen who is at least 13 and enter the teen’s contact information.
- Add or confirm the Family Account’s shared payment method.
- Wait for Lyft to send the teen an invitation link by text.
- Have the teen download Lyft, create the Teen account and complete the required safety tutorial.
After setup, the parent or guardian can either request rides for the teen or allow the teen to request rides independently.
If Lyft Teen does not appear in the profile menu, the feature may not be available in that market, or the parent may not have completed verification. Using an ordinary adult account as a workaround is not the same as enrolling in Lyft Teen and does not create the program’s formal exception for unaccompanied minors.

Who can use the account?
- The teen must be 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17.
- A parent or legal guardian with authority to act for the teen must create and manage the account.
- The teen must use their own Teen account; account sharing is not permitted.
- Guests must be at least 13. Guests under 18 need permission from their own parent or guardian.
- A teen may join no more than two Family Accounts over the lifetime of the account.
- After leaving a Family Account, the teen must wait 30 days before joining another. Leaving a second time permanently removes access to that Family Account.
When the teen turns 18, Lyft says the account transitions to a standard adult Lyft account.
Who requests the ride?
Both the parent and teen can request rides after onboarding. When a ride is requested, the parent or guardian receives SMS updates and a link for real-time trip tracking. The parent also receives information about the assigned driver, including profile details.
If the parent requests the ride, the teen cannot change the pickup or destination. In general, Lyft says ride details can be changed only by the parent or guardian after the request is made. Changes may affect the fare.

This arrangement can be useful for a parent booking a ride to school, sports practice, work or an appointment. It also means a teen should confirm the pickup and destination before the request is made, particularly when the adult is booking remotely.
What does Lyft Teen cost?
Lyft’s official materials reviewed for this article do not identify a separate fixed Teen subscription or a universal teen surcharge. The applicable price is the fare shown in the app for the selected trip and ride type.
All Lyft Teen rides use the Family Account’s shared payment method:
- The teen cannot add a separate payment card.
- Card details are not visible to the teen or other Family Account members.
- Family administrators can view payment history in the Family hub.
- The parent or guardian remains responsible for fares, tips and applicable additional charges.
For personal-finance planning, treat Lyft Teen as variable ride-by-ride spending rather than a predictable monthly transportation bill. Compare the displayed fare with the cost of the family’s alternatives in your area; Lyft’s launch materials position the service as a convenient alternative to vehicle ownership and teen-driver costs, but that is not a universal cost conclusion.
Safety features and their limits
Lyft Teen adds controls intended specifically for rides involving minors. Lyft describes the following features:
PIN verification
A four-digit code is shared with the teen and must be entered by the driver before the ride begins. The teen should not give the code to a driver before confirming that the vehicle and driver match the information in the app.

Trip monitoring and live tracking
Lyft’s Smart Trip Check-In monitors for unusual activity, such as long stops or route deviations, and may contact the teen. Parents can follow the trip on a live map and receive milestone notifications.
Communication
The teen, driver and guardian can communicate through an in-app group chat. Lyft also provides the guardian with assigned-driver information.
Audio recording
Audio recording is available through the Lyft app and is automatically used for Teen rides only after the teen grants microphone access. Recordings are encrypted and are not accessible to the driver, teen or guardian unless they are shared with Lyft as part of a safety report.

If microphone access is disabled, the ride will not be recorded through Lyft. Lyft says the guardian is notified when a Teen account is created without microphone access or when access is later turned off. Its terms also note that drivers may independently record with phones, dashcams or other devices, subject to Lyft’s policies.
Emergency support
In the United States, the Teen app’s Safety panel can connect the teen to ADT emergency support. If the teen does not respond, ADT may contact 911 and provide location information. Lyft describes a different RapidSOS process in Canada, so families should not assume the same emergency provider or response path applies everywhere.
Women+ Connect
Women+ Connect is enabled for teen riders to increase the chances that female and nonbinary teens match with women or nonbinary drivers. Matching is not a guarantee that a particular driver will be available.

These controls can reduce some risks, but they do not eliminate the basic risk of a minor traveling alone with a stranger. Parents should establish a backup plan for a canceled ride, unavailable driver, dead phone battery or lost data connection.

Teen riders must follow several physical and account rules:
- Ride in the back seat.
- Wear a seat belt.
- Use the four-digit PIN before the trip starts.
- Do not let another person use the Teen account.
- Do not bring a guest under 13.
- Obtain parental or guardian permission for guests ages 13 through 17.
- Do not exceed the number of available additional back seats with seat belts.
A driver may cancel and report a ride if the passenger appears under 13, refuses the back seat or seat belt, has an unauthorized guest or violates another Teen policy. Lyft’s terms say violations can lead to account suspension or deletion.

Lyft says Teen rides are intended to be matched with drivers who meet additional road- and in-car-safety criteria, have passenger experience and strong feedback, and complete annual background checks.
Drivers must confirm the teen’s first name, require the back seat and verify the four-digit PIN. Eligible drivers may be automatically enrolled in Teen rides, but Lyft says they can opt out:

- Open the top-left menu.
- Tap Driving Preferences.
- Find Lyft Teen.
- Switch the toggle off.
Drivers can turn the option back on if they continue to meet eligibility requirements. Lyft says cancellations for specified Teen-policy reasons are paid and do not affect the driver’s cancellation rate.

Current driver guidance lists Standard, XL, Scheduled, Black and Black SUV rides, along with Pet rides under the ordinary pet policy. Shared rides are not available for Teen accounts under that guidance. Ride-type availability can vary by market, so families should check the options displayed in the app.
Important limitations and privacy trade-offs
Availability is not universal
A launch figure of more than 200 markets should not be interpreted as permanent nationwide availability. Check the parent app each time the family is considering a new service area.
The parent controls payment
A teen cannot attach an independent card. This is convenient for centralized oversight but may be a problem for divorced parents, blended families or households that need separate transportation budgets. The adult responsible for the Family Account remains responsible for charges.

Parents receive meaningful trip information, not unlimited access
Parents receive driver details, ride notifications, live tracking and payment visibility. That should not be read as unrestricted access to every conversation or recording. Audio availability depends on microphone permission, and recordings are handled under Lyft’s safety-reporting process.
The phone is part of the safety system
The teen needs a working phone, battery, data connection and ability to use the app, communicate with the driver and access emergency tools. Families should identify a backup contact and a safe location where the teen can wait if a trip is canceled.
Is Lyft Teen right for your family?
Lyft Teen may fit families that need occasional transportation to school, sports, work, appointments or activities and want the parent to retain trip visibility and payment control.
Before enrolling, ask:
- Does Lyft Teen appear in the parent’s app for the relevant market?
- Is the teen old enough and able to follow the PIN, back-seat, seat-belt and guest rules?
- Is the family comfortable sharing trip location and ride information with the managing adult?
- Is the family comfortable with in-app audio recording when microphone access is granted, as well as the possibility of driver-operated recording devices?
- Will the shared payment method cover expected fares, tips and additional charges?
- Does the teen need XL, scheduled, pet or another ride type that may not be available locally?
- What will the teen do if a driver cancels or no eligible driver accepts the ride?
Families that require a separate teen payment method, guaranteed transportation, or more formal caregiver-to-child handoff procedures may need a different arrangement. Lyft Teen should be evaluated as a flexible rideshare option, not as a guarantee of availability or safety.

Lyft Teen is a controlled transportation program for 13- to 17-year-olds, not unrestricted access to ordinary Lyft accounts. A verified parent or guardian sets it up, pays for rides and receives trip information; the teen can request rides after completing the safety tutorial. The program’s practical value depends on local availability, driver supply, the family’s comfort with location and audio features, and whether variable ride costs fit the household budget.
