Yes—historically. Elon Musk announced Linda Yaccarino as Twitter’s new CEO on May 12, 2023. But that is no longer a current description: Twitter later became X, and Yaccarino’s public profile now identifies her as the company’s former CEO.

Yaccarino was an advertising and media executive brought in to lead business operations, while Musk said he would remain focused on product design, technology and his broader “everything app” strategy.

What Musk announced in May 2023

The succession happened in two stages. On May 11, 2023, Musk said he had hired a female successor who would begin in approximately six weeks. On May 12, he identified her as Linda Yaccarino. TheWrap reported that Musk described the intended division of responsibilities as follows:

  • Yaccarino: business operations.
  • Musk: product design and new technology.

That distinction matters. Musk did not announce that he was leaving Twitter’s ownership or abandoning its product and technology direction. He said he would move toward an executive-chairman and technology-focused role while Yaccarino handled the company’s business leadership.

#1 Best Overall

Who was Linda Yaccarino?

Yaccarino was primarily an advertising and media executive rather than a career social-media product leader. Before joining Twitter, she spent nearly 12 years at NBCUniversal, where she most recently served as chairwoman of global advertising and partnerships. Before that, she worked at Turner for almost two decades.

Her experience included television, cable, digital advertising and relationships with major marketers. She graduated from Penn State in 1985. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s background report provides additional detail on her career.

NBCUniversal credited Yaccarino’s team with generating more than $100 billion in advertising sales since 2011. That was a company biography claim about her team’s sales; it should not be read as independently audited profit, or as evidence that Yaccarino personally generated that entire amount.

Why did Musk choose an advertising executive?

The appointment made commercial sense because Twitter needed to rebuild relationships with advertisers. After Musk acquired the platform, some brands paused or reduced spending amid concerns about content moderation, brand safety and the company’s rapid policy and product changes.

Yaccarino brought long-standing relationships with advertisers and experience selling advertising across television and digital properties. Her appointment therefore appeared designed to strengthen the company’s commercial and operational side while leaving Musk closely associated with product and technology.

That was the apparent business rationale—not proof that the strategy worked. Hiring Yaccarino did not by itself demonstrate that advertiser confidence, revenue, moderation or platform performance had improved.

Did Yaccarino replace Musk in control of Twitter?

She succeeded Musk as CEO, but “replaced Musk in control of Twitter” is too broad. A CEO’s formal responsibilities, an owner’s influence and a technology leader’s product authority are not the same thing.

Musk remained the owner and said he would focus on product design and technology. Contemporary analysis also questioned whether he would stop making important product and policy decisions. El País’s coverage discussed that continuing influence.

The most accurate description is that Yaccarino became the company’s CEO with a stated focus on business operations, while Musk retained substantial ownership and operational influence over the product, technology and strategic direction.

How Twitter became X

Yaccarino was announced as Twitter’s CEO while the platform was transitioning to a new corporate and product identity. Musk was already using the name X Corp. and describing his goal of turning the service into X, an “everything app.”

For that reason, use Twitter when describing the May 2023 announcement and X when discussing the company and platform after the rebrand. These were not two entirely separate CEO jobs: Yaccarino became CEO during the transition from Twitter to X.

What happened to Yaccarino afterward?

Yaccarino later left the CEO role. Her public X profile now describes her as the former CEO of X and identifies her with eMed Population Health. Her public profile is the clearest evidence that she no longer leads X.

Search-indexed X summaries report that she stepped down on July 9, 2025. Because the available result is an X-generated summary rather than a clearly accessible corporate resignation announcement, that date is best attributed rather than presented as an independently confirmed fact. X material from earlier periods may also still describe her as CEO; for example, a 2025 company post used that title. That illustrates why older company pages can be stale.

The available evidence establishes that Yaccarino is a former CEO, but it does not responsibly establish the current X officeholder. It is therefore better not to name a successor without a separately verified, up-to-date source.

The accurate answer to the original headline

“Twitter’s new CEO is Linda Yaccarino” was accurate as a dated news statement on May 12, 2023. It is misleading as a present-tense headline in 2026.

A precise summary is: Elon Musk named Linda Yaccarino CEO of Twitter in 2023. She led the renamed X for a period, while Musk retained major product and technology influence, and she is now described publicly as the former CEO of X.
