Lei Jun reportedly forecast that humanoid robots would be deployed at scale in Xiaomi factories within five years. The claim appeared in a November 30, 2025 report citing an interview with Beijing Daily. Counting five years from that report suggests a target around November 2030, but that date is an inference—not a published Xiaomi deadline. The available sources do not establish a robot count, factory list, deployment schedule, or production targets.
Xiaomi has described highly automated, 24-hour “lights-out” manufacturing and has published specifications for its CyberOne humanoid platform. Those are relevant foundations, but neither proves that humanoid robots are already doing factory work or that CyberOne is production-ready.
What Lei Jun reportedly said—and what remains unconfirmed
A November 30, 2025 Gizmochina report attributed to Xiaomi chairman and CEO Lei Jun a forecast that humanoid robots would enter Xiaomi factories “at scale” within five years. The report says the remarks came in an interview with Beijing Daily and describes robots taking on tasks currently performed by assembly-line workers.

The exact primary interview transcript or recording is not available in the cited material, so the statement is best treated as a reported forecast—not a formally documented corporate deployment commitment. The wording also leaves important questions unanswered: whether it refers to all Xiaomi factories or selected sites, which tasks are intended, and whether “within five years” means pilots, broad deployment, or a commercially significant fleet.

If the five-year period began around the reported publication date, it points roughly to November 2030. The interview may have taken place on a different date, however, and Xiaomi has not published a formal deadline in the sources cited here.
“At scale” has no public number attached
In the report, “at scale” is not defined by a unit count or operating target. It might mean several robots on one production line, deployments across multiple factories, or enough machines to make a measurable difference to output or labor costs. Those are very different outcomes.
No public figure in the cited material specifies the number of robots, sites or lines involved; operating hours; intervention rates; uptime; maintenance burden; cost per completed task; or productivity improvement. Without those measures, “at scale” signals ambition but cannot be assessed as a concrete rollout plan.
Xiaomi already automates manufacturing—but lights-out does not mean humanoid
Xiaomi investor-relations material describes a smart factory capable of 24-hour “lights-out” production. That is evidence of substantial manufacturing automation, not evidence that humanoids run the factory. Lights-out operations can use purpose-built machinery, fixed robotic arms, automated inspection, software and material-handling systems without employing bipedal robots.

The distinction matters because factories use different technologies for different jobs:
- Industrial robotic arms and fixed automation perform repeatable tasks such as welding, fastening or moving parts along a set path.
- Automated mobile robots and guided vehicles move materials around a facility.
- Machine-vision systems inspect parts and identify defects.
- Humanoid robots combine a human-like body, locomotion and manipulation, potentially allowing them to work in spaces and with tools designed for people.
For a fixed, predictable task, specialized equipment may be cheaper, faster, safer and easier to maintain than a humanoid. Xiaomi’s existing automation makes it a plausible place to test new robotics, but it does not close the gap between automated production and humanoid deployment.
CyberOne shows a robotics platform, not a factory-ready fleet
Xiaomi’s official CyberOne page lists a height of 177 cm, weight of 52 kg, 21 degrees of freedom, maximum walking speed of 3.6 km/h and peak torque of 300 Nm. Xiaomi also claims 99% depth-analysis accuracy within eight meters and advertises visual sensing, environmental-sound recognition, emotion recognition and programming by demonstration.
These specifications show that Xiaomi has developed a humanoid robotics platform. They do not establish that CyberOne—or a different Xiaomi robot—can manipulate varied production parts autonomously, work safely beside employees, connect reliably to factory-control systems or run across shifts with acceptable uptime and cost. The published page does not provide the production reliability, safety, task-quality or economic data needed to judge factory readiness. CyberOne should therefore be understood as a technology demonstrator or research platform unless Xiaomi supplies stronger evidence of industrial deployment.

What jobs might humanoids tackle first?
If Xiaomi does put humanoids into factories, plausible early assignments would be bounded, repetitive work in structured environments: moving standardized bins or trays, loading machines, delivering materials, kitting, packaging, basic inspection, or controlled fastening and placement. These are potential use cases, not confirmed Xiaomi assignments.
A humanoid could be attractive where a facility already has human-sized workstations, shelves, aisles and tools. In theory, one adaptable machine might move between tasks without redesigning the whole line. But that flexibility has to deliver value in practice. A robotic arm can be more precise at a fixed station; an autonomous mobile robot can move goods without the complexity of two-legged walking; and a purpose-built system can be optimized for one product and one cycle.
The relevant question is not simply whether a robot can perform a task in a demonstration. It is whether it can complete that task repeatedly, at the required quality, speed and safety level, with little intervention and at a competitive total cost.

The Gizmochina report also says Lei cited an X-ray system combined with vision AI for inspecting large die-cast components. It describes inspection in about two seconds and claims the system is ten times faster and more than five times as accurate as a human worker. These figures should be attributed to the report: the underlying measurement method and comparison baseline are not provided in the cited material.

To interpret the numbers, a reader would need to know what “accuracy” means, whether the two seconds cover scanning, analysis or the complete inspection cycle, and whether the comparison was with manual inspection or another system. In any case, AI-assisted inspection is a different technology from a bipedal robot. It may demonstrate automation and AI applied to manufacturing, but it does not show that a humanoid can perform assembly work reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The engineering and business hurdles are substantial
Factory deployment requires more than a capable body and a successful demonstration. A robot must handle variation in parts and surroundings, detect and recover from errors, and operate safely near people and machinery. It also needs sufficient uptime, dependable batteries and charging logistics, maintainable actuators and sensors, secure software, fleet monitoring and integration with inventory, production, quality and maintenance systems.
Small failures matter in production. A gripper that slips on a reflective or flexible component, a vision system confused by lighting or occlusion, or a machine unable to recover from one misaligned part can interrupt a line. Frequent human intervention can erase the productivity gains that a robot is supposed to provide. And where a conventional machine can perform the same task, the humanoid must justify its additional mechanical and software complexity.

The report associates AI-enabled industrial change with a potential trillion-yuan market, described as roughly $140 billion. That is an estimate attributed to Lei or the report, not an independently established market forecast in the cited evidence; the market’s scope and conversion basis are not documented there.
What the forecast could mean for factory workers
A prediction about robots taking over some assembly-line tasks does not establish that Xiaomi plans to eliminate a particular number of jobs. Early deployments could remove people from hazardous or physically repetitive work, supplement crews, or shift employees toward robot supervision, maintenance, quality checks and exception handling. They could also replace specific tasks. The available sources do not disclose a Xiaomi workforce policy, job-count target or redeployment plan.
It is therefore premature to translate the forecast into a claim that humanoids will replace factory workers wholesale. The practical labor impact will depend on which tasks are automated, how many robots are deployed, how plants change their staffing and what roles remain for people.
What would make the plan more credible?
Evidence of progress would go beyond a robot demonstration. Useful milestones would include Xiaomi naming the factories and production tasks involved, identifying whether it is using its own platform or a third-party robot, and publishing unit counts and operating results. The most telling measures would be hours of autonomous operation, human-intervention rates, defect rates, safety performance, uptime and cost per completed task.
Until those details appear, the forecast should be read as an ambitious direction rather than a verified rollout. Xiaomi’s manufacturing automation and CyberOne program make the ambition plausible enough to follow, but do not establish that humanoids are ready for broad factory use.
