These are historical prices, not live 2026 offers. On December 3, 2024, Koodo, Virgin Plus and Fido had ended or changed several Black Friday wireless promotions. Koodo’s reported 60GB offer rose by $15 a month after autopay, Virgin Plus’s 60GB and 100GB offers rose by $5, and Fido replaced its 100GB promotion with a higher-priced 80GB offer. The changes described were primarily to public offers for people signing up or switching plans—not proof that every existing customer’s bill automatically went up.
Here is what changed in that post-Black-Friday snapshot, how discounts affected the advertised prices, and what to check before switching. MobileSyrup reported the December 3, 2024 plan changes; carrier offers have since moved on.
What changed after Black Friday 2024?
The headline “deals ended” covers more than one kind of change. A promotional plan can disappear, a bill credit can expire, the data allowance can shrink, or a carrier can replace an offer with a different plan. Those changes affect new sign-ups and customers who switch plans differently from a price increase applied to someone who keeps an existing plan.

The changes were not identical. Koodo had the steepest reported increase on its 60GB comparison and removed its 100GB deal. Virgin Plus kept its 60GB and 100GB tiers but charged more. Fido’s effective prices depended on both autopay and a monthly credit, making the base price a poor guide to the amount a qualifying customer would actually pay.
A January 2025 follow-up likewise described fewer data allowances and higher prices after the holiday offers ended. That report is also historical context, not evidence of current 2026 pricing.
Koodo: $15 more for 60GB, and no replacement for the 100GB deal
In the reported comparison, Koodo’s 60GB plan went from $34 to $49 a month after autopay—a $15 monthly increase, or $180 over 12 months if the rates applied for a full year. The previous 100GB offer was $39 after autopay and was removed. The post-promotion lineup instead included 20GB for $39 and 40GB for $44 after autopay, while the 60GB tier was $49.

At the former 100GB offer’s $39 effective monthly price, the reported replacement was 20GB: 80GB less data for the same monthly amount. A customer who genuinely used close to 100GB would not get an equivalent deal by choosing the new 20GB tier.

Koodo’s reported talk-and-text plan also rose from $20 to $30 a month after autopay. The reported post-promotion prices before the autopay reduction were $35 for talk and text, $44 for 20GB, $49 for 40GB and $54 for 60GB. Those are useful distinctions when comparing a headline rate with the amount after the qualifying discount.
Virgin Plus: same data tiers, $5 higher
Virgin Plus’s reported 60GB plan with Canada/U.S. calling increased from $34 to $39 a month. Its 100GB plan with Canada/U.S. calling rose from $39 to $44. Its reported $25 talk-and-text plan was unchanged.
Unlike Koodo’s removal of its 100GB offer, Virgin Plus kept the two highlighted data tiers in this snapshot and raised each by $5. The December 2024 report presented Virgin’s prices without the same autopay discount structure used in its Koodo and Fido comparisons. Do not assume that historical treatment describes Virgin’s current billing or offer terms.

“Canada/U.S. calling” is not the same as U.S. roaming. Calling benefits generally concern calls placed from Canada; roaming concerns using your phone while physically in another country. Check the plan terms if you need service while travelling.

Fido: read the credit and autopay terms, not just the price
Fido’s former $34/60GB and $39/100GB Black Friday offers were no longer reported as available. The replacement offers included a 60GB plan with Canada/U.S. calling, listed at $64 before a $10 monthly credit and autopay reduction, for a reported effective price of $44. Another offer had 80GB and international calling to seven countries; the reported effective price was $49 after autopay, with a $59 price also cited in the post-promotion lineup. The distinction matters: the amount due depends on which credits and discounts apply and how the offer is displayed.
Compared with the former $39/100GB promotion, the reported 80GB replacement cost $10 more per month and included 20GB less data. Fido also had a reported $20 talk-and-text offer after autopay, and a 2GB plan at $37.50 was reported unchanged. These are December 2024 observations, not current Fido rates.
Before relying on an effective price, check the plan’s terms for the base rate, credit amount and duration, autopay eligibility, and what happens if your payment method changes. A credit that expires or a lost autopay discount can make the actual cost higher than the comparison-page figure.

The reported public-plan changes do not establish that all existing Koodo, Virgin Plus or Fido customers were moved to more expensive plans. A carrier can stop offering a promotion to new activations while leaving a customer’s current plan intact. An existing customer’s bill could change for a separate reason—for example, a specific rate-plan notice, an expiring credit or loss of an autopay discount.

Koodo says it notifies customers at least 30 days before an affected rate plan or add-on price increase through the bill and Self Serve account. See Koodo’s price-increase guidance. For Fido and Virgin Plus, check the notice and terms tied to your own account rather than inferring a universal increase from a new-customer offer.
- Review your latest bill against the previous one; look for a changed plan charge, a credit that ended, or an autopay discount that disappeared.
- Read any price-change notice and confirm its effective date and which plan or add-on it names.
- Log in to your carrier account. Targeted or existing-customer offers may differ from the public sign-up page.
- Check the full monthly cost before tax, including all conditional discounts and the date any credit ends.
How to decide whether to switch
Compare the plan you can actually obtain today with the plan and bill you have—not just with a historical Black Friday price. The December 2024 offers are useful for understanding how quickly promotional value can change, but they are not a reliable quote for a new activation in 2026.
- If you use little data: Compare talk-and-text or a lower-data plan, but verify whether the rate requires autopay and whether you need data for navigation, messaging or occasional hotspot use.
- If you use a lot of data: Check your recent usage before replacing a 100GB plan with 20GB, 60GB or 80GB. Also compare speed, hotspot rules, throttling and whether unused data rolls over.
- If you travel to the U.S.: Decide whether you need U.S. calling from Canada or actual U.S. roaming. They are different features. Check roaming destinations and charges directly in the current plan terms.
- If you have device financing: Find out the remaining device balance and any consequences of changing or cancelling service before porting your number.
- If you have a valuable older plan: Do not give it up solely because a new public offer is advertised. Confirm that the replacement’s data, calling, roaming and total price are better for your needs.
For an apples-to-apples comparison, write down the regular plan price, autopay discount, every bill credit and its end date, monthly data, network access, calling and roaming features, and any activation or SIM charge. Then compare the total before tax over the period you expect to keep the plan. The lowest first-month price may not be the lowest ongoing cost.

Coverage also depends on where you use your phone; the brands are associated with different major Canadian networks, but that does not make coverage or performance identical everywhere. Check the coverage map and the exact plan’s network terms for your home, work and regular travel routes. Compare regional and digital providers—including Public Mobile, Freedom Mobile, Fizz or Videotron—if their coverage and features fit. Verify current offers directly rather than assuming a historical competitor comparison still applies.

If switching, make sure your phone is compatible and understand SIM or eSIM availability, activation costs, porting requirements and any credit forfeiture. Do not cancel your old service before the number transfer is complete. Koodo’s current BYOP information says it handles cancellation as part of the transfer; confirm the procedure with whichever carrier you choose.
What the carriers show now
As of August 2026, the carriers’ public pages have changed substantially from the 2024 snapshot. Fido advertises Canada-wide 5G plans and automatic-payment discounts; Koodo’s BYOP page promotes 5G plans and selectable perks; Virgin Plus presents province-sensitive offers, and the accessible plan information includes a BYOP offer with an autopay credit and 20GB. These broad signals are not a complete, directly comparable live price table.
Check the carrier’s current checkout flow for the price and eligibility that apply to your province and account. Fido’s current plans page, Koodo’s BYOP page and Virgin Plus plans page are starting points, not guarantees that every displayed offer is available to every customer.
