Cheap 1TB SSDs may become harder to find, but Kioxia has not proved that every budget drive has disappeared. Kioxia executive Shunsuke Nakato reportedly said the company’s planned 2026 production was already sold out. Separate coverage attributed to him a warning that 1TB SSDs selling for about ¥7,000—roughly $45 in the conversion used at the time—were no longer realistic.
That is evidence of tight supply and strong forward commitments, not proof that retail shelves are empty. Existing inventory, clearance sales, older PCIe 3.0 and SATA drives, QLC models, and future NAND capacity can still affect what shoppers pay.
What Kioxia actually said
According to reports citing South Korean outlet Digital Daily, Nakato, managing director of Kioxia’s Memory Business Unit, made the comments during a meeting or interview in Seoul. The most consistently reported point was that Kioxia’s production volume for 2026 was already sold out.
The separate claim about ¥7,000 1TB SSDs requires more caution. English-language reports differed over whether that wording appeared directly in the original Korean report or resulted from translation or paraphrase. HotHardware noted that it could not find the broader sentence in the original report it reviewed. Treat the price remark as attributed reporting, not a confirmed verbatim quotation.

HotHardware’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage both provide useful context, but neither statement should be expanded into “all NAND is sold out globally.”
“Production sold out” does not mean SSDs are out of stock
NAND flash moves through several stages before a consumer sees a finished SSD:
- Manufacturers allocate wafer-fabrication capacity.
- Flash is processed, packaged, tested, and qualified.
- Components are sold to SSD manufacturers, device makers, cloud providers, and other customers.
- SSD brands assemble or source finished drives.
- Distributors and retailers receive inventory later.
When Kioxia says its production is sold out, the practical meaning is most likely that its planned output has already been committed to customers or contracts. It does not mean Kioxia-branded drives have vanished from stores, that every NAND producer has the same allocation position, or that a retailer cannot temporarily discount older stock.
Retail prices also respond with a delay. A retailer may still be selling NAND purchased months earlier, absorb part of a cost increase, or run a promotion to clear inventory. Conversely, wholesale increases may reach consumers only when that inventory is replenished.
Why NAND supply is tightening
Manufacturers cut production after oversupply
NAND is a cyclical market. During the previous downturn, weak pricing and excess inventory encouraged manufacturers to reduce output and limit investment. TrendForce reported that major suppliers were reducing or ending some legacy NAND products, including MLC NAND, and forecast global MLC NAND capacity to fall 41.7% year over year in 2026.
That creates a timing problem: production cuts made during oversupply can become a shortage when demand recovers. Adding usable capacity is slow because new equipment, fabrication processes, testing, and customer qualification take time.

TrendForce’s capacity analysis also illustrates why total NAND bit production is not the same as the supply of every consumer SSD. Capacity is divided among different densities, layer counts, controllers, interfaces, and customer segments.

AI is a major demand accelerator—but not the whole explanation
AI infrastructure requires substantial storage for datasets, model checkpoints, inference caches, databases, analytics, and staging workloads. Cloud providers and other data-center operators are consequently buying more enterprise SSD capacity, often through large contracts that can receive priority over spot-market consumer products.
TrendForce said first-quarter 2026 NAND orders substantially exceeded suppliers’ production capacity and forecast enterprise-SSD prices to rise 53% to 58% quarter over quarter. Its explanation included AI-related inference workloads, data-center procurement, and limited near-term capacity expansion. Kioxia’s own 2026 investor materials likewise describe a strategic shift toward AI-infrastructure-led growth and multi-year agreements.
But “AI bought all the NAND” is too simple. Earlier production reductions, inventory normalization, cloud expansion, smartphone and notebook demand, legacy-product phase-outs, and manufacturers’ preference for higher-value contracted products all contribute to the price cycle.
What this means for 1TB SSD prices
The 1TB drive is especially visible because it is a common minimum for gaming PCs, laptops, general-purpose desktops, and entry-level workstations. When supply tightens, shoppers notice quickly because there are many more buyers comparing the same mainstream capacity.

Tom’s Hardware also reported model-specific increases of 83% for the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB and 132% for the WD SN700 1TB. Those figures apply to named drives and defined comparison points; they are not the average increase for every SSD.
The defensible conclusion is that reputable 1TB NVMe drives routinely approaching the $45–$50 range may no longer be the normal price floor while supply remains tight. That is different from saying no drive can ever fall below that price.
Are cheap 1TB SSDs gone forever?
No. Low prices can still appear through retailer clearance, old inventory, coupons, PCIe 3.0 models, SATA drives, QLC products, or lesser-known brands. A temporary sale does not contradict a broader increase in NAND costs.
The market is also capable of reversing. TrendForce’s July 2026 outlook said NAND supply growth could outpace demand in 2027 and ease supply constraints during the second half of that year. That is a forecast, not a promise that every retail model will immediately become cheaper, but it is an important counterweight to permanent-shortage headlines.
TrendForce’s 2027 outlook supports a more measured interpretation: the unusually cheap era may be ending for now, while future capacity growth or weaker demand could restore discounts.
Should you buy an SSD now?
| Your situation | Reasonable approach |
|---|---|
| You need storage for an imminent build or upgrade | Buy a reputable compatible drive at a price you can accept. Do not assume a short-term decline is guaranteed. |
| Your current drive is failing | Replace it promptly and maintain a backup. Waiting for a market correction is not worth risking data loss. |
| You need 2TB or more for work, games, or media | Compare price per usable terabyte, but remember that larger drives can also rise sharply in absolute price. |
| The upgrade is optional | Waiting and monitoring may make sense, especially if you can tolerate SATA, PCIe 3.0, QLC, or older inventory. |
| You are buying purely to speculate on prices | Avoid panic-buying. Retail discounts, component changes, and a future NAND oversupply can all undermine that bet. |
Do not interpret the news as a command to buy any SSD immediately. The financial question is whether the cost of waiting—including lost productivity, an imminent build delay, or failure risk—exceeds the possibility of a better deal later.

How to choose a drive during a shortage
Capacity
- 500GB or 512GB: lower upfront cost, but increasingly restrictive for modern games, applications, and media.
- 1TB: a practical mainstream minimum for many PCs.
- 2TB: often a better long-term fit if the price premium is reasonable.
- 4TB or more: convenient for large libraries, but exposed to larger absolute price increases because the drive contains more NAND.
Compare the actual price per terabyte rather than assuming 2TB is always better value. A retailer may discount one capacity to move inventory, making the usual pattern disappear temporarily.
NAND type and workload
TLC is generally the safest balance for an operating-system, gaming, or work drive. QLC can be sensible for read-heavy use, media libraries, secondary storage, and ordinary office workloads, but sustained writes may slow substantially after the drive’s SLC cache is exhausted.
MLC and SLC products are generally niche, enterprise, industrial, or legacy categories rather than normal consumer recommendations. TrendForce’s reporting describes MLC NAND as moving further toward a niche market as suppliers reduce output.
Interface and performance
- SATA: useful for older laptops and desktops without an NVMe slot, but limited by the SATA interface.
- PCIe 3.0 NVMe: often adequate for general computing and potentially attractive as clearance stock.
- PCIe 4.0 NVMe: the mainstream performance and value category for many current systems.
- PCIe 5.0 NVMe: generally more expensive and more demanding of cooling; not automatically better for office work or ordinary gaming.
Advertised sequential speed can be misleading. A drive may reach its headline figure only while its dynamic cache is available. Large transfers can become much slower afterward, especially on budget models.
Check the details behind the product name
Before buying, verify:
- Whether the drive uses TLC or QLC NAND.
- DRAM or a DRAM-less controller with Host Memory Buffer support.
- Endurance rating and warranty duration.
- Sustained-write behavior after the cache is exhausted.
- Thermal throttling and heatsink requirements.
- The exact controller and NAND revision.
- Whether the seller identifies the model’s current components.
SSD manufacturers can change internal components while retaining the same family name or model number. Independent reviews of the exact current revision are more useful than relying on the product title alone.

A cheaper SATA drive is not a substitute for an NVMe drive if the machine has only an NVMe slot, and a PCIe 5.0 drive may add cost without delivering a meaningful benefit in a PCIe 3.0 system.
Alternatives if internal SSD prices are unattractive
External SSD
An external SSD can work well for backups, game libraries, video projects, or moving data between computers. It does not avoid NAND pricing pressure, however: it still contains flash memory, plus a controller, bridge, enclosure, and interface.
Hard disk drive
For archives, bulk media, and less latency-sensitive backups, an HDD may be a more practical capacity choice. It is slower, less shock-resistant, and noisier than an SSD, so it is not a replacement for a fast system drive.
Recommended Free Tools
Cloud storage
Cloud storage can provide synchronization and off-site backup without an immediate hardware purchase. It is less suitable where internet access is slow or capped, data must remain available offline, or recurring subscription costs are undesirable.
The personal-finance takeaway
Kioxia’s reported comments matter because they show that NAND suppliers are committing output in a market where enterprise and AI-related demand is strong. But a factory allocation is not the same thing as a store shortage, and a store shortage is not the same thing as a permanent change in the price of every SSD.
For a necessary upgrade, buy based on compatibility, workload, warranty, endurance, and the total cost of delay. For an optional upgrade, waiting is a legitimate strategy if you can accept uncertainty and monitor prices. Budget alternatives exist, but each one—QLC, SATA, PCIe 3.0, DRAM-less design, or an unfamiliar brand—should be treated as a trade-off rather than a free discount.
The most accurate reading of the news is therefore narrower than the headline: the era of routinely ultra-cheap 1TB SSDs may be ending for now, but Kioxia has not established a permanent global shortage or guaranteed that bargains will never return.
