Juneteenth is a U.S. federal holiday, formally named Juneteenth National Independence Day. President Joe Biden signed the law creating it on June 17, 2021. But federal holiday status does not require private employers—including technology companies—to close or give employees paid time off. The company examples below describe plans announced in 2020 and 2021, not verified policies for 2026.
What Juneteenth commemorates
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger’s General Order No. 3 was read in Galveston, Texas, announcing that enslaved people there were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. That proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, more than two years earlier. The history of emancipation was geographically and legally complex: June 19, 1865, did not mean slavery ended everywhere in the United States that day. The Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery except as punishment for a crime, was ratified later in 1865. GovInfo’s overview of Juneteenth provides historical context.

When Juneteenth became a federal holiday
On June 17, 2021, Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, Public Law 117-17. The law added “Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19” to the federal holiday list in 5 U.S.C. § 6103. Because June 19, 2021, fell on a Saturday, the first federal observance was Friday, June 18. In 2022, the observed federal holiday was Monday, June 20, because June 19 was a Sunday. In 2026, the holiday fell on Friday, June 19, according to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) schedule.

What “federal holiday” means for workers
Federal holiday status changes the federal calendar and activates applicable rules for federal employees. It does not automatically give every U.S. worker a day off. The law amended the holiday list for federal purposes; it did not create a general private-sector paid-leave requirement. OPM explains how holiday scheduling and pay apply to federal workers, including exceptions such as intermittent employees, who ordinarily are not entitled to paid holiday time off or holiday premium pay under the standard rules. See OPM’s guidance on holidays, work schedules, and pay.
#1 Best Overall
| Workplace or worker | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Federal agencies and covered federal employees | Federal holiday scheduling and applicable pay-and-leave rules apply. Work schedules and eligibility can affect the details. |
| Private technology companies | The employer’s holiday and paid-time-off policies control; federal designation alone does not require closure or paid leave. |
| Contractors and vendors | Their employer’s policy and contract or staffing arrangements may determine whether they work and how they are paid. |
| State and local government employees | State or local observance rules may differ from federal rules. |
| Hourly and customer-facing workers | Whether work continues and whether holiday pay applies depends on employer policy and applicable law. |
If your private technology employer does not give you Juneteenth off, that fact alone generally does not mean it violated federal law. Check your employee handbook, holiday calendar, offer terms, collective-bargaining agreement, and any applicable state or local rules. A company may close corporate offices while keeping cloud infrastructure, security, support, retail, or other operations staffed.
How technology companies said they would observe it
Companies did not adopt one common model. The following are reported 2020–2021 announcements and plans; they should not be read as confirmation of each company’s 2026 policy.

Paid company holidays and days off
- Twitter and Square: Contemporaneous reporting said the companies made Juneteenth a permanent paid company holiday in 2020. TechCrunch’s 2020 roundup covered their announcements and other technology-company responses.
- Apple: A 2021 roundup reported that Apple treated Juneteenth as a U.S. company holiday, giving employees the day off. Apple also planned a week of employee events centered on education, community, and celebration. The report does not establish the company’s present policy or imply a global day off.
- Lyft: Reporting in 2020 described a day off for employees alongside educational and community programming.
- Progress Software: The company announced an annual paid Juneteenth holiday for U.S. employees; in 2021 it observed the holiday on Friday, June 18. See its company announcement.
- 1Password: The company said its global team would have a paid holiday and offices would be closed Friday, June 18, 2021. Its Juneteenth pledge describes that announcement.
Floating holiday or personal time
Salesforce was reported to have added Juneteenth to its floating-holiday program. A floating holiday lets employees choose when to take the time, but it does not necessarily close offices or create a shared companywide day off. Facebook was reported to offer a paid personal day in 2021 alongside educational programming. A personal day and a named company holiday may both provide paid time away, but they are not identical policies.

Google announced a no-meetings day for Friday, June 18, 2021, and a two-hour event with the Black Googler Network focused on music, history, and storytelling. A no-meetings day can make room for reflection, but it is not necessarily paid leave: employees may still be expected to work. Google also described product and public-facing programming, including a Google Doodle and content through Google Arts & Culture. See Google’s 2021 announcement.

Education, events, and public programming
Other reported plans emphasized programming rather than a companywide closure. Amazon planned public programming that included a Juneteenth Unityfest and highlighted the day’s significance. Microsoft scheduled employee programming for Monday, June 21, 2021. Facebook’s reported Juneteenth Day of Learning also fit this educational approach. A June 2021 roundup described varying plans at Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and other companies.
These approaches are not interchangeable. A fixed paid holiday creates a shared pause but may require some operations to remain staffed. A floating day offers flexibility but puts the scheduling decision on each employee. A personal day provides time off under a broader benefit; a no-meetings day reduces one kind of work pressure; an event or public campaign offers education or visibility but does not itself provide leave.

Why employers announced plans before the federal holiday
Technology-company announcements began before Juneteenth became a federal holiday. The 2020 wave followed nationwide protests and increased scrutiny of racial inequity in recruiting, representation, workplace culture, and technology products. Twitter and Square were among the early major technology employers reported to have adopted a paid Juneteenth holiday. A holiday can give employees time to observe and make the date visible in a workplace calendar, but it is one policy—not proof that a company has resolved broader problems or met its diversity commitments.
What employees should check
- Confirm the year’s calendar: Look for whether your employer observes June 19 itself or shifts the day when it falls on a weekend. Federal weekend-observance rules generally provide the preceding Friday when a holiday falls on Saturday and the following Monday when it falls on Sunday; private employers may choose differently.
- Read the policy label carefully: “Company holiday,” “floating holiday,” “personal day,” and “no-meetings day” can mean different things for pay, scheduling, and whether work is expected.
- Check who is covered: A policy may apply only to U.S.-based employees, or may differ for global teams, part-time workers, contractors, and outsourced staff.
- Ask about operating teams: An office closure does not necessarily mean customer support, data centers, security, cloud services, or other essential operations stop.
- Check the authoritative workplace documents: Your current HR calendar, handbook, and applicable agreement are more useful for your entitlement than an old public announcement.
The public company announcements cited here establish what those organizations said or planned in 2020–2021. They do not independently verify the current 2026 holiday policy at every named employer. For the current federal schedule, consult OPM’s federal holidays page; for a private-sector job, consult your employer.
