Jio is not partnering with MediaTek to build electric scooters, batteries or motors. The July 25, 2024 agreement is a business-to-business technology collaboration: JioThings will combine its AvniOS software, connectivity and vehicle-IoT services with MediaTek chipsets to offer two-wheeler manufacturers 4G smart instrument clusters and connected modules.
For investors, industry watchers and consumers, the important question is whether this becomes a meaningful recurring-revenue business for Jio—or remains mainly a showcased dashboard platform. Public information confirms the technology announcement and later demonstrations, but not mass production, pricing, customer volumes or a broad commercial rollout.
What Jio and MediaTek announced
JioThings, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms, and Taiwan-based fabless chipmaker MediaTek announced a long-term collaboration in New Delhi on July 25, 2024. The companies presented two products for two-wheelers, with electric scooters as an important target:

- A 4G smart module: an embedded connectivity and vehicle-IoT module intended for vehicle applications.
The announcement positions the products as “Made in India” solutions for India and the global market. It does not disclose the contract value, per-unit price, minimum purchase commitments, production volumes, rollout dates or named launch customers. MediaTek’s announcement describes a platform intended for original-equipment manufacturers, not a retail accessory that scooter owners can order and install themselves.

How the technology is divided
The partnership brings together different parts of the connected-vehicle stack:
- MediaTek: system-on-chip technology, cellular connectivity and related computing hardware.
- JioThings: AvniOS, the automotive application suite, cloud-connected vehicle services and integration with vehicle systems.
- The scooter manufacturer: the display and vehicle hardware, battery and motor systems, controllers, antennas, certification, final software configuration and customer support.
The proposed system can connect the dashboard to vehicle controllers, charging infrastructure and battery-management systems. That does not mean Jio or MediaTek is manufacturing the battery, inverter or motor, nor does it mean the platform controls the entire battery-management architecture.
“Android-based” also needs qualification. AvniOS is described as AOSP-based. That does not establish access to Google Mobile Services, the Google Play Store or ordinary smartphone-Android compatibility.
What a rider could get
Depending on the manufacturer’s implementation, a compatible scooter could offer a richer digital cockpit than a basic speedometer and battery gauge. Potential features named in the announcement include:
- 4G-connected vehicle information and notifications
- navigation and location services
- voice recognition and the Jio Voice Assistant
- music through JioSaavn
- browser access through JioPages
- geospatial and location features through JioXploR
- vehicle-status and diagnostic information
- charging and battery-related information
- cloud-connected service and fleet tools
These are platform capabilities, not a standard feature list guaranteed on every scooter. The final experience will depend on the OEM’s screen, controls, software settings, data plan, account requirements and licensing arrangements. The announcement does not say that every service will be available on every vehicle or in every country.
Why electric two-wheelers are an attractive entry point
Electric scooters are especially dependent on software and electronic systems. Riders may need information about battery state, range, charging, faults, location and service status, while manufacturers can benefit from remote diagnostics and fleet monitoring.

A connected cluster can bring those functions into one interface. For delivery, rental and commercial fleets, location tracking, maintenance alerts and usage data may be more valuable than music or browser features. For private owners, the appeal is convenience—but only if connected services remain affordable, reliable and useful after the initial vehicle purchase.
MediaTek’s announcement cited projections of an Indian two-wheeler EV market worth ₹10,000 crore by the end of 2025, more than three million vehicles on the road and a projected 50% compound annual growth rate over the following five years. These were company-cited market projections, not independently verified results, so they should not be treated as confirmed market outcomes. Read the original announcement.
The chipset: MT8766 and MT8768
Reporting on the launch identified MediaTek’s MT8766 and MT8768 as the chipsets associated with the cluster solution. Publicly documented specifications are more complete for the MT8766 than for the MT8768.
According to MediaTek’s MT8766 product page, the platform includes:
- a 14-nanometre manufacturing process
- a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 CPU running at up to 2.0GHz
- an Imagination GE8300 GPU
- a 4G/LTE Cat-4 modem
- Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0
- multi-constellation GNSS for positioning
- support for displays up to FHD+ at 60Hz
- Android operating-system support
- a stated seven-year platform lifecycle
The seven-year lifecycle claim applies to the MT8766 platform. It is not a guarantee that a particular scooter manufacturer will provide seven years of security patches, cloud services, replacement hardware or vehicle software support.

MediaTek’s public partnership material does not provide a complete MT8768 specification, modem category, antenna design, certification status or per-unit cost. Those details matter to OEMs evaluating performance, reliability and total cost of ownership.

Is 4G enough for a smart scooter?
For the announced use case, 4G can be sufficient. Navigation data, location updates, cloud synchronization, diagnostics, voice-assistant requests, app content and software or configuration downloads generally do not require 5G speeds.
However, 4G-capable hardware is not the same as guaranteed connectivity. Actual performance depends on:
- carrier coverage and network quality
- the embedded-SIM or SIM-provisioning arrangement
- data-plan activation and payment
- roaming and regional compatibility
- antenna placement inside the scooter
- network shutdowns or carrier strategy changes
If mobile data fails, basic locally generated indicators such as speed, battery level and warning signals may continue to work. Navigation, streaming, cloud diagnostics, remote tracking and account-based services may stop or show stale information. The announcement does not specify the platform’s offline-mode design.
What the deal could mean for Jio’s business
The strategic opportunity extends beyond selling or enabling dashboard hardware. Each connected vehicle could potentially create demand for several Jio-related services:
- connectivity subscriptions or bundled data plans
- cloud and fleet-management tools
- mapping and geospatial services
- voice, music and other digital-content services
- remote diagnostics and maintenance systems
- charging-infrastructure software
- vehicle-data services for manufacturers and fleet operators
This is the central business angle: Jio could use connected two-wheelers as another distribution channel for telecom, cloud and digital services. But these are potential monetisation routes, not confirmed per-scooter revenue or a disclosed data-monetisation programme. Public material does not establish subscription prices, data ownership rules, advertising arrangements or whether the owner, manufacturer or fleet operator pays for connectivity. TechCrunch’s reporting also framed the opportunity around connectivity, cloud, mapping, content and vehicle data rather than battery or motor manufacturing.
What it means for scooter manufacturers
A turnkey platform could shorten development time for an OEM that does not want to build its own operating system, modem integration, application layer and vehicle APIs. MediaTek’s integrated hardware may also simplify the design compared with sourcing a processor, modem and connectivity components separately.

The trade-off is dependence. An OEM would need to assess Jio’s software roadmap, cloud availability, update policy, data governance, service pricing and support commitments. Large manufacturers may prefer to retain control of branding, customer accounts, vehicle data and cloud architecture. Low-cost scooter makers may decide that the screen, modem, antenna, certification and recurring data costs outweigh the value of advanced connected features.

For export-oriented manufacturers, a Jio-linked service layer may require additional work for local carrier support, certification, language, privacy rules and regional content. MediaTek and Jio have stated that the collaboration is intended for India and the global market, but that is a target market—not proof of availability worldwide.
Evidence of implementation so far
There is a concrete follow-up demonstration. On November 18, 2024, MediaTek said it showcased JioThings-powered smart clusters on the Kinetic Green E-Luna and Kinetic Green Flex electric two-wheelers. MediaTek’s India showcase supports the conclusion that the technology had been demonstrated on identifiable vehicles.
A showcase does not establish that every production vehicle shipped with the system, that Kinetic Green adopted it as standard equipment, that the partnership became exclusive or that the platform reached mass-market scale. As of the latest evidence available for this article, public information still does not establish production volume, broad OEM adoption or commercial pricing.

Connectivity and ownership
Buyers and fleet operators would need to know who activates the SIM, who pays for data, what happens when a vehicle changes owners and whether services stop when a subscription expires. The public announcement does not describe that workflow.

Before signing an OEM contract, manufacturers would need answers about over-the-air updates, approval rights, failed-update recovery, rollback, security-patch duration and whether the vehicle remains usable if dashboard software is corrupted. A chip’s lifecycle is not the same as a complete vehicle-support commitment.

Vehicle integration
The announcement does not enumerate supported communication protocols, functional-safety classification, automotive cybersecurity certification, diagnostic standards, battery-management vendors or validation results. Compatibility with one scooter cannot be assumed for every two-wheeler.
Privacy and cybersecurity
A connected scooter can generate sensitive information about location, routes, riding behaviour, charging and mechanical condition. OEMs should clarify data ownership, retention, sharing, account deletion and security responsibilities. Internet-connected displays and modules also expand the attack surface, even when separated from safety-critical propulsion systems.
Rider distraction
Music, browser and voice features may improve convenience, but they can also distract riders if the interface is poorly designed. Nothing in the cited material proves that this platform improves riding safety, and safety claims should not be inferred from connectivity alone.
How to interpret the partnership financially
For consumers, this announcement does not currently create a publicly priced product to buy. A scooter advertised as “connected” could involve an upfront hardware cost, a manufacturer-funded data plan, a recurring owner subscription or a fleet contract. Those commercial terms must be checked in the specific vehicle’s documentation.
For investors and businesses, the stronger signal is strategic: Jio is seeking a position in the connected-vehicle layer of a growing EV category, while MediaTek supplies the embedded computing foundation. The opportunity is attractive if OEMs want a ready-made platform and if recurring services generate revenue after the initial hardware sale. It is less compelling if manufacturers build their own software, riders reject subscriptions, connectivity costs remain high or platform support becomes fragmented.
The partnership therefore matters, but its significance should not be overstated. It is an attempt to place Jio’s telecom and digital ecosystem inside two-wheelers—not evidence that Jio has entered battery manufacturing, motor technology or autonomous mobility.
