Apple announced on July 9, 2025, that Jeff Williams would step down as chief operating officer later that month, with senior vice president of Operations Sabih Khan named as his successor. Williams stayed on temporarily to oversee selected work, including Apple Watch and health-related responsibilities, before retiring later in 2025. The change was a phased leadership transition—not an immediate departure or a new development in 2026.
What Apple announced—and when
The July 9, 2025 announcement set out a sequence rather than a single handover date:
- Later in July 2025: Williams would step down as COO.
- During the transition: He would remain at Apple in a narrower role, continuing to oversee Apple Watch and health-related work.
- Later in 2025: He would retire from the company.
- As COO: Sabih Khan, then Apple’s senior vice president of Operations, would succeed him.
Apple’s design organization was expected to report directly to CEO Tim Cook after Williams’ retirement. That detail matters: Apple described a successor for the COO job, but the wider responsibilities Williams had held did not all move to Khan as one clearly defined package. Contemporaneous reporting summarized the announcement and reporting-line change in The Mac Observer and a Techmeme roundup.

Follow-up coverage reported that Williams’ final departure took place in November 2025. That later date is distinct from the July announcement and the planned COO handoff; the follow-up report is secondary coverage.

Why “nearly a decade” refers to the COO role
Williams became Apple’s COO in 2015 and announced his departure from the role in 2025, making his tenure roughly ten years. He joined Apple in 1998, so he had worked there for about 27 years when the transition was announced. “Nearly a decade” describes his time as COO—not his total career at Apple.
What Jeff Williams did at Apple
The COO title covered more than internal administration. Williams’ reported remit included global operations and customer support. He also oversaw Apple Watch and health-related work, and the design organization had been in his reporting structure after the departure of Evans Hankey. He was part of the senior leadership overseeing Apple’s ability to bring major products to market at global scale.

That is not the same as saying Williams personally designed the Watch, made every product decision, or controlled every part of Apple’s health strategy. The careful description is that he helped oversee these areas as a senior executive.

Why Sabih Khan was a logical successor
Khan was promoted from within Apple, not brought in as an outside hire. Before becoming COO, he was senior vice president of Operations, with responsibilities tied to the systems that keep Apple’s products moving: supply-chain management, procurement, manufacturing relationships, logistics and supplier programs. He had spent roughly three decades at Apple by the time of the transition.
That background makes the handoff an operational succession. It puts the COO role in the hands of an executive already leading much of the work most directly associated with Apple’s operations. The appointment signals continuity in operational leadership; it does not, by itself, establish a change in product strategy.
What changed—and what remained unclear
- Operations: Khan succeeded Williams as COO.
- Design: After Williams’ retirement, Apple’s design organization was expected to report directly to Cook, rather than to a new COO.
- Watch and health: Williams retained selected responsibilities temporarily during the transition. The initial announcement did not spell out a permanent replacement for every part of that work.
A direct reporting line to Cook describes the structure reported for the transition; it does not prove Apple abolished design leadership permanently. Nor should readers assume that all Watch, health, Fitness+, software and hardware teams were reassigned together without a specific announcement.

For operations, Khan’s promotion favors continuity: Apple elevated an executive already responsible for its global operational machinery. That is significant for a company whose product launches depend on coordinating manufacturing, suppliers and logistics around the world.
For design, having the organization report directly to Cook concentrates another important area under the CEO. The announcement did not name a single new executive to inherit Williams’ full combination of design, Watch and health responsibilities. That leaves a distinction between the clearly announced COO succession and the less fully specified allocation of other work.

The change also prompted speculation about Tim Cook’s eventual successor. Williams’ retirement removed one prominent executive from such discussions, but Apple did not announce a CEO succession plan as part of this transition. Names discussed in media commentary—including John Ternus—remain speculation, not confirmation of who will replace Cook.
The announcement described a planned transition and retirement, not a scandal or an involuntary dismissal. It should not be read as evidence of a performance problem or as proof of a wider strategic shake-up.
