Japan Airlines (JAL) reported a cyberattack on December 26, 2024, that disrupted its network and delayed domestic and international flights during Japan’s busy year-end travel period. The outage affected ground operations—including baggage check-in and ticket sales—not aircraft safety systems. JAL said flight safety was unaffected and that it had found no evidence of a customer-information leak.
What happened to Japan Airlines on December 26?
JAL said the disruption began at about 7:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time (JST), when its internal and external network systems began malfunctioning. The airline initially described the incident as a cyberattack. It later said it had identified the source of the system failure and temporarily shut down the router believed to be causing the problem. Contemporary reports put that identification at about 8:56 a.m. JST. Reuters coverage reported the timing and router response; The Japan Times also described the disruption and response.
The network problem affected airline services that rely on connected systems to coordinate bookings, flight information and airport processes. JAL suspended ticket sales for flights departing that day while it addressed the issue. Same-day domestic and international ticket sales resumed at about 2 p.m. JST, according to Reuters.

How many flights were delayed?
There is no single figure that captures the full disruption without a time and delay threshold. Counts increased as the day went on, and reports did not all use the same definition of a delay:

Other contemporary coverage gave intermediate counts, which may reflect earlier updates or different delay thresholds. These figures should not be added together: they are snapshots of the same developing disruption. The reporting describes delays and a temporary suspension of ticket sales, not a large-scale cancellation event or a complete grounding of JAL’s network. The Associated Press reported delays to domestic and international services.
Which services and operations were affected?
The disruption reached beyond the ability to buy a ticket. Reports said flight-status and reservation-related functions were affected, and automated baggage check-in malfunctioned at some airports. JAL used staffed counters where automated processing was unavailable, according to The Japan Times.
JAL Cargo also posted a notice that several website functions were temporarily unavailable, including shipment tracing and flight-status and schedule searches. That indicates the network disruption affected cargo-facing services as well as passenger operations; it does not, by itself, establish that cargo flights were cancelled. JAL Cargo’s notice lists the affected functions.

When network services falter, an airline may need to rely on manual workarounds and coordinate information across airport staff, booking systems and flight operations. A problem on the ground can therefore slow check-in or departure processes without affecting an aircraft in flight. The reported impact was an operational and network-availability disruption, not a loss of control over aircraft.
Was it a DDoS attack?
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack floods a network or online service with traffic, making it difficult for legitimate users or connected systems to function. Contemporary reports described a large volume of data arriving from an external source and disrupting network equipment. That account is consistent with a DDoS-style attack, and an expert cited by The Japan Times discussed DDoS as a possible explanation.
But the public reporting reviewed did not establish a definitive forensic finding that the incident was a DDoS attack. JAL’s description of an external data surge and a network-equipment failure supports that interpretation, not a confirmed account of the full method. The attacker’s identity and motive were not publicly established in these reports. There is no substantiated basis here to describe the incident as ransomware, claim that a database was stolen, or attribute it to a particular country or group.

Was passenger data stolen, and was flight safety affected?
Reuters reported that JAL said it had found no customer-information leak and had suffered no damage from computer viruses. Those are the airline’s reported statements, not a public independent forensic determination that data exposure was impossible. The available coverage does not document a confirmed passenger-data breach.
JAL said flight safety was not affected, and the reporting does not indicate that aircraft systems or flight-control functions were compromised. That distinction matters: a cyberattack can cause substantial delays by disrupting reservations, baggage handling or airport coordination even when there is no reported impact on aircraft safety. The Associated Press reported JAL’s statement on safety.
How did JAL respond, and when did service return?
JAL’s reported response included identifying the network source of the malfunction, temporarily shutting down the router believed to be involved, using staffed baggage counters where automated check-in was affected, and pausing ticket sales for flights departing that day. Ticket sales for same-day domestic and international flights resumed at about 2 p.m. JST. JAL apologized and provided operational updates to passengers, according to contemporary coverage from Reuters and The Japan Times.

Reuters also reported that ANA Holdings, Japan’s other major airline group, said it had seen no signs of an attack on its systems. The available reporting therefore describes a JAL incident, not a simultaneous attack on Japan’s two major airline groups.

December 26 falls in Japan’s year-end and New Year travel period, when passenger volumes are typically high. Delays and the loss of automated check-in or ticketing can mean longer lines, uncertainty about departure times and more pressure on airport staff. The timing magnified the inconvenience, but reports did not describe a prolonged shutdown of Japan’s air transport network.

For passengers, the general lesson is to check an airline’s official flight-status page or app during a disruption, keep booking confirmations and delay notices, and follow airline or airport instructions if staff move check-in to counters. Third-party social-media posts may be incomplete or outdated. Rebooking, reimbursement and accommodation eligibility depend on the itinerary, applicable rules, fare and airline terms; passengers should ask the airline about their specific situation rather than assume a cyberattack automatically guarantees compensation.

What remains unknown
The contemporary reports establish a same-day disruption and restoration of ticket sales, but they do not provide a detailed public forensic report, a named attacker, a confirmed motive, a definitive technical classification, or a complete accounting of affected flights and passenger impact. They also do not establish any connection between this event and the January 2024 Haneda runway collision. Those events should not be conflated.
The incident is best understood as a contained but operationally significant cyberattack: network disruption delayed flights and interrupted customer and cargo services, while JAL said flight safety was unaffected and reported no customer-information leak. The public evidence supports that account, but leaves important technical and attribution questions unresolved.
