There is no confirmed platform-wide Zettle outage in the latest status evidence available for August 18, 2026. The official status page was reported as showing all systems operational, and the available UK and Sweden Downdetector pages showed no current problem spike. Those checks are not a live guarantee: check Zettle’s status page now for any newer incident. An individual app, account, reader, terminal, payment, or payout can still fail while the wider service is marked operational. In the U.S., the product is being rebranded as PayPal Point of Sale; it is not the separate bank-transfer service Zelle.

Status evidence cited here is dated August 18, 2026. Check the live status page before relying on it; status can change.

Is iZettle or Zettle down right now?

The latest available checks do not confirm a broad, ongoing outage. Zettle’s official status page was reported as showing “All Systems Operational” across its listed markets. Available UK and Sweden Downdetector results showed no current problems. Downdetector reflects user reports, not an official diagnosis, and the official status result cited here may have changed since it was checked.

To check your own region:

  1. Open the official status page. Look for operational, degraded, partial outage, major outage, or maintenance notices, and note the affected service and market.
  2. Check Downdetector for your country. An unusual rise in reports can point to an emerging or regional problem; isolated reports or no spike do not prove that your account and equipment are working.
  3. Look for a notice in PayPal or Zettle support channels. Do not assume an issue is “under investigation” unless an official notice or support communication says so.

The service may be called iZettle, Zettle, PayPal Zettle, or PayPal Point of Sale depending on market and date. PayPal says its U.S. Zettle product is being rebranded as PayPal Point of Sale without changing the underlying services. See PayPal’s rebrand explanation. iZettle/Zettle is not Zelle.

Identify what is failing

Symptom Possible causes First check
App will not open, freezes, or will not load App, device, or internet connection Switch networks, force-close the app, and restart the device.
Cannot log in or complete verification Wrong account details, multifactor authentication, or account security controls Confirm the business account and use its registered verification method.
Reader will not pair Bluetooth, battery, pairing, compatibility, or reader fault Charge it and reconnect through the POS app.
Terminal will not turn on or connect Battery, charger, Wi-Fi, mobile connection, or hardware Charge and restart it; check its network connection.
One customer’s card is declined Issuer decision, card limits, or unsupported payment method Check whether other cards work; do not treat one decline as proof of an outage.
All payments fail Service, internet, reader, account, or payment-network issue Check status, connection, and account notices before retrying.
Payment appears complete but funds are missing Transaction-history delay, review, settlement, or payout delay Check transaction details and PayPal account notices; authorization and available funds are different stages.
Website or dashboard is inaccessible Browser, connection, account, or service issue Try another connection or browser and check the status page.

If several merchants in different locations report the same failure and an official incident is posted, a service outage is more likely. If only one device or employee is affected, investigate that device, login, or account first. One card failing points more toward its issuer or payment method; sales going through while a payout is delayed points to a settlement or account issue rather than necessarily a checkout outage.

Try these checks before contacting support

  1. Check the official status page and save a screenshot with the date and time.
  2. Check the relevant country’s Downdetector page for an unusual report spike.
  3. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if available. Toggle airplane mode off and on, and avoid open public Wi-Fi where possible.
  4. Force-close and reopen the POS app, then restart the phone, tablet, or terminal.
  5. Check that the device and reader have sufficient charge.
  6. Confirm you are signed in to the correct PayPal/Zettle business account.
  7. Check transaction history before attempting a payment again. Do not repeatedly resubmit a transaction that may already have been authorized.
  8. Try a small test payment only when you can verify it will not create a duplicate charge.

If a card reader will not connect

For the U.S. card reader, PayPal’s hardware information lists a compatible smartphone or tablet running iOS 14 or later or Android 8.0 or later, Bluetooth, and the PayPal Point of Sale app. Requirements can differ for other products and markets; check the current U.S. hardware information or your local documentation.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth and keep the reader close to the phone or tablet.
  2. Disconnect the reader from other nearby devices, then charge it.
  3. Open the POS app and follow its reader-connection flow. Do not rely only on pairing from the device’s general Bluetooth settings.
  4. Restart both devices and make sure the app and operating system are up to date where compatible.
  5. If possible, test the account with another supported device. If the reader still cannot be found, the problem may be the reader or its compatibility rather than a service-wide outage.

If a terminal will not turn on or connect

PayPal’s terminal advice in the GB troubleshooting guide includes charging the terminal with its supplied USB-C cable and power adapter, long-pressing the power button, checking Wi-Fi and its password, and restarting it if mobile connectivity fails. The guide says the terminal does not support unsecured open Wi-Fi. For a terminal that will not force-restart, it describes holding the power button for about 10 seconds and, if needed, using the power-cut pinhole. These instructions are for the GB documentation; hardware models, menus, and support procedures can vary by country. Follow the instructions for your model and market.

If you cannot log in

Check for a PayPal login or account-access issue separately from a POS outage. Verify the email address and business account, then complete multifactor authentication using the registered method. Avoid repeatedly guessing passwords, which can trigger additional security controls. If PayPal displays a limitation, verification, reserve, or compliance message, contact account support: reinstalling the POS app or replacing a reader will not clear an account restriction.

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS

  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Never give your password, one-time verification code, or full card details to someone who contacts you claiming to help with an outage. Start support from PayPal or Zettle’s official website.

If a payment is declined, stuck, or missing

A decline is not, by itself, evidence that Zettle is down. Check whether the issue affects one customer or all customers, whether the reader is connected, and whether the merchant device has internet. With the customer’s permission, you can test a different card or wallet, or another supported method such as contactless versus chip-and-PIN. A different reader or terminal can also help isolate the problem.

A frozen screen or missing confirmation does not prove that a payment failed. If the customer may have been charged, check transaction history and the customer’s banking notification before retrying. Record the time, amount, receipt or authorization reference, and screen message. Do not submit the same payment repeatedly.

If a payout or balance is delayed

Separate a payment that was never authorized from a completed sale missing from the app, a payment awaiting review, and a payout that has not reached the bank. A completed transaction does not necessarily mean the proceeds are immediately available. PayPal’s U.S. POS pricing information notes that transactions may be reviewed and held or delayed. Check the payment record and PayPal account for notices; do not assume a particular release or bank-transfer timeframe unless PayPal or the bank provides one.

What to do if the customer may have been charged

  • Check sales and transaction history before attempting another charge.
  • Record the date and time, amount and currency, payment method type, device and app version, reader or terminal model, and exact error message.
  • Keep a screenshot, receipt, or reference number. Record only limited payment details, such as the last four digits where appropriate—not the full card number or security code.
  • Ask whether the customer sees a pending or completed transaction, but do not promise that it will reverse by a particular time.
  • Contact support if the charge status remains unclear. Issue a refund or reversal only after confirming the transaction state, and avoid duplicate refunds.

Contact the right support team

Use the support route for your country and product. Zettle’s GB help page covers matters including deposits, compatible phones, bank connections, accepted cards, app use, and multifactor authentication; it directs PayPal Business account users to PayPal support. The separate GB support-options page lists weekday hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and phone, chat, and email options. Those hours are specific to that GB page and should not be assumed to apply in the U.S. or elsewhere. U.S. users can use PayPal Point of Sale support.

When you contact support, provide the error, its timestamp and timezone, your country, device and app version, reader or terminal model, whether other devices or payment types work, and relevant transaction details. If a status-page incident is posted, keep records and follow its updates. If the status page is operational but your account or equipment remains unusable, give support those details so it can distinguish an account, device, or payment issue.

Keep sales moving while you wait

  • Use a genuinely separate backup such as another processor, bank terminal, payment link, invoice, or cash. A second PayPal reader may not help if the underlying PayPal service or your account is the point of failure.
  • If you accept cash temporarily, record those sales separately and reconcile them later.
  • Do not write down full card numbers or security codes. Manual entry, where available, may have a different fee and risk profile from card-present payments.
  • Keep any customer communication factual: say you are checking the transaction, rather than promising a reversal or restoration time you have not been given.

A failed POS session does not automatically mean you need to switch processors. If you want a separate backup ecosystem, compare connectivity and offline behavior, hardware, support, transaction and payout costs, and the tools your business needs. A backup that depends on the same account or service will not protect against that service’s outage.
