Yes—seeing “Vires in Numeris” scrolling across an original Ledger Nano S is normally harmless. The Latin phrase is commonly translated as “strength in numbers,” and on the Nano S it is associated with the device’s idle or auto-lock screen—not a virus, malware alert, or proof that the device has been hacked.
If the device has been sitting untouched, press both physical buttons at the same time. It should leave the standby display and return to the locked state or PIN prompt.
What does “Vires in Numeris” mean?
Vires in Numeris is commonly translated as “strength in numbers.” Vires can mean strength or powers, while numeris refers to numbers. The phrase is commonly associated with Bitcoin and also appeared in Ledger Nano S branding and product imagery.

Why does the Ledger Nano S display it?
On the original Nano S, the phrase can appear after the device has been inactive. It functions like an idle-screen or screensaver-style display connected with the device’s auto-lock behavior. You might see it while:
- Waiting for a transaction to confirm
- Leaving the Ledger connected to a computer
- Pausing while using Ledger’s official software
- Returning to the device after a period of inactivity
Historical Nano S coverage associated this behavior with firmware 1.3.1 and later. That is a historical reference, not a guarantee that every later firmware version uses identical timing, wording, or menus. The phrase itself has also been documented as part of Nano S branding: Ledger’s Nano S product material used “vires in numeris” in connection with the device.

How to dismiss the message
- Look at the Ledger Nano S’s own screen.
- Press both physical buttons simultaneously.
- Wait for the device to return to its locked state or PIN-entry screen.
- Enter the PIN only on the Ledger’s physical device when prompted.
A historical explanation of the Nano S describes the same two-button action for leaving the standby display. Do not enter your PIN or recovery phrase into a website, pop-up, email, support chat, or computer form.

On supported Nano S firmware, the relevant setting was historically located at Settings → Security → Auto-lock. Depending on the firmware version, the available timeout choices and menu wording may differ. If the option is present, you can adjust the auto-lock timeout or disable it.

Disabling auto-lock is not required to keep the device safe, however. Auto-lock is a security feature: it requires the PIN again after inactivity. Leaving it enabled may be preferable if the device is connected or accessible to other people.
When “Vires in Numeris” is not the issue
The phrase is normally routine when it appears after inactivity, behaves like a scrolling standby message, and disappears when both buttons are pressed. But the phrase is not an authenticity test by itself. A counterfeit or modified device could imitate familiar branding, so use the official verification process as well.

Ledger’s documentation treats “MCU firmware is not genuine” as a distinct warning. The MCU controls functions including the Nano S’s buttons, screen, and USB connection, so that warning should not be confused with a harmless idle display: Ledger’s firmware announcement explains the distinction.

What to do if both buttons do not work
- Do not enter your recovery phrase anywhere.
- Disconnect and reconnect the device with a known data-capable USB cable.
- Open Ledger’s official desktop or mobile software downloaded from Ledger’s official website.
- Check whether the device is recognized and passes the available genuine-device check.
- If an integrity or authenticity warning appears, stop treating the issue as a screensaver problem.
- Use Ledger’s official troubleshooting or support process.
Do not reset the device merely because this message appeared. A reset can create unnecessary risk and may require the legitimate recovery phrase to restore access.

Basic Ledger safety checks
- Buy a new device from Ledger or an authorized reseller, not an unknown marketplace seller.
- A genuine new device should not arrive with a prewritten recovery phrase or preset PIN.
- Generate or restore recovery material using the Ledger device’s own screen.
- Never type the 24-word recovery phrase into Ledger Live, a browser, website, support form, email, or computer document.
- Never provide the recovery phrase to someone claiming to be Ledger support. Legitimate support should not need it.
Does this apply to the Nano S Plus or Nano X?
This explanation concerns the original Ledger Nano S. The Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax, Flex, and other Ledger devices can have different firmware, screens, settings, and lock behavior. Do not assume that the exact phrase, timeout, or Settings → Security → Auto-lock path applies to every model.
Likewise, an old Nano S may have compatibility or firmware issues unrelated to the standby message. Seeing “Vires in Numeris” after inactivity does not by itself establish that the device is current, genuine, or fully supported.
Bottom line
“Vires in Numeris” normally means the Ledger Nano S has entered its idle or auto-lock display. Press both buttons together to return to the PIN screen. Treat separate messages—especially “MCU firmware is not genuine,” “Device is not genuine,” or any request for your recovery phrase—as security issues requiring a different response.
