Verdict: misleading—and the date is wrong. Twilio completed its Zipwhip acquisition on July 14, 2021, not “last year” as of August 2026. Twilio later wound down the software component of Zipwhip, but it did not announce that it was ending business texting generally. Its SMS and MMS products, including toll-free messaging, remain listed as available.
When did Twilio acquire Zipwhip?
Twilio completed the acquisition on July 14, 2021. That makes “last year” inaccurate as of August 2026. Twilio’s completion announcement described Zipwhip as a U.S. provider of toll-free messaging. At the time, Twilio said Zipwhip served more than 30,000 organizations and had enabled texting on more than 5 million landline and toll-free numbers; those are historical acquisition-era figures, not current customer totals.
Was the price $850 million?
Yes, as the rounded announced value. Twilio described the transaction as approximately $850 million. In a later filing, it recorded an adjusted accounting purchase price of $838.8 million, reflecting the accounting allocation of cash, stock and employee-related equity components. The figures refer to different descriptions of the same acquisition, not conflicting sale prices: see Twilio’s 2021 filing and 2022 annual filing.

Twilio said it was winding down the software component of its Zipwhip business in 2024. That is a narrower statement than saying it shut down SMS, all Zipwhip messaging infrastructure, or every number that had been text-enabled. Twilio’s filing about the change describes the software end of life; another 2024 filing discusses the wind-down and migration.

It helps to distinguish the hosted Zipwhip product experience—such as its business texting software—from the underlying number, carrier connectivity and messaging services. Ending a software product does not, by itself, establish that a customer’s telephone number has been disconnected. What happens to a particular account or number depends on its migration arrangements.
Is Twilio still offering business texting?
Yes. Twilio continues to list SMS and MMS products, including messaging with local long codes, toll-free numbers and short codes. Its U.S. SMS pricing page remains active, and the Twilio status page lists broader messaging services as well as Zipwhip-related components. A status page is a point-in-time operational snapshot, not a guarantee that any individual service will remain available indefinitely.

Twilio’s Programmable Messaging is a different proposition from simply continuing to use a legacy hosted Zipwhip inbox. It can support custom business workflows and integrations, but a business should confirm the tools, setup and account arrangements it needs rather than assume every Zipwhip feature transfers unchanged.

What should a Zipwhip customer do?
Twilio’s Help Center has an official Zipwhip end-of-life migration support section. The available public guidance does not establish one universal deadline for every customer, so check the instructions and notices for your own account before planning a cutover.

- Find your account-specific guidance. Sign in to the relevant account and review Twilio’s current Zipwhip EOL migration instructions. If you cannot find them or the deadline is unclear, ask Twilio support to confirm eligibility and timing for your account.
- Inventory what you use. Record whether your number is toll-free, local, landline-enabled for texting, tied to voice service, or connected through an API. List users, shared inbox workflows, auto-replies, webhooks, CRM integrations, delivery receipts and MMS needs.
- Confirm what will transfer. Ask specifically about number continuity, conversation history, integrations, users and workflow features. Do not assume these migrate automatically or that a Twilio Console login is interchangeable with a Zipwhip login.
- Protect records and compliance processes. Export records you are required to retain and preserve consent and opt-out information. Check whether the replacement setup requires A2P 10DLC registration for relevant local-number traffic or toll-free verification. Twilio notes that registration-related charges and carrier fees can apply.
- Test before announcing a change. Verify inbound replies, outbound SMS, MMS attachments, opt-outs and delivery receipts. Test integrations and permissions, and check replies across the carriers your customers use before changing customer-facing contact details.
What might Twilio messaging cost in the United States?
Twilio’s U.S. pricing page, checked August 18, 2026, listed these base rates. They are usage charges, not an all-in estimate, and rates can change.

These prices come from Twilio’s U.S. pricing page. SMS billing is per segment, so a long text—or one containing Unicode characters—may incur multiple segment charges. Carrier fees and applicable registration-related fees can add to the base rate. Businesses with higher volumes can ask about volume pricing; larger senders may also review Twilio’s current rates and enterprise pricing.

Where migrations can go wrong
- Number versus software: Do not treat the end of the Zipwhip interface as proof that a number has been disconnected—or assume the number will keep working without action. Confirm its status and migration path for your account.
- Missing integrations: Moving a number does not necessarily recreate webhooks, CRM connections, shared inboxes or automated replies. Identify and test each dependency.
- Unexpected costs: Budget for message segments, carrier fees, number rental and any registration charges that apply, not just the base SMS rate.
- Different compliance routes: Local-number A2P 10DLC requirements and toll-free verification are not interchangeable. Confirm the route and requirements for your number and traffic.
- Unverified shutdown dates: An old email or third-party post may not reflect the deadline for your account. Use Twilio’s current instructions or support confirmation.
