Yes—the Substack app is free to download and use on iPhone, iPad, and Android. You can browse, read free posts, and subscribe to many publications at no cost. However, some creators charge for premium articles, newsletters, podcasts, videos, livestreams, or community access.
What is free on Substack?
- The app download: Substack is listed as “Free · In-App Purchases” on Apple’s App Store, and Google Play offers free installation.
- Free subscriptions: Many publications let you follow them as a free reader.
- Free content: Creators may offer free posts, previews, podcasts, videos, Notes, and other content.
Substack’s official help guidance says the app itself is free. That does not make every publication or post free.
What can cost money?
Individual creators decide whether to offer paid subscriptions. A publication may be completely free, combine free and premium posts, or offer only limited free previews.

A paid subscription may unlock:
- Premium articles and archives
- Members-only newsletters

There is no single universal “Substack price.” Creators set their own monthly and annual plans, and prices can vary by country, currency, taxes, publication, and payment method. A free subscription normally gives access only to the creator’s free posts and updates; it does not automatically unlock paid archives.

Do you have to pay Substack a monthly app fee?
No. Substack does not require a separate monthly fee simply to download or use its reader app. You pay only if you choose a paid subscription offered by a particular creator.
Substack’s platform and payment fees are a separate issue. According to its creator pricing guidance, Substack charges creators 10% of paid transactions, in addition to Stripe processing fees. Those are fees connected to paid publication transactions—not a charge for readers who install the app or use free content.

Is Substack cheaper on the website than in the iPhone app?
It can be, but not always. Substack’s iOS payment documentation, updated July 30, 2026, says U.S. readers may see both a web-card checkout option and Apple’s in-app payment option. Substack says the Apple price may be adjusted upward to account for App Store fees.

Payment options vary by country, device, publication, and app-store rules. Do not assume that web checkout is available everywhere or that it will always be cheaper.

How to use Substack without paying
- Install the official app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or open Substack on the web.
- Sign in or create an account if prompted.
- Find a publication or creator.
- Tap Subscribe.
- Choose the free option when one is offered.
- Read the available free posts and media.
If a post is locked, the creator has designated it as premium. You can look for another free post, read the available preview, or review the paid upgrade options.

Do you need the app?
No. You can read public Substack posts through a creator’s website, and free posts may also arrive by email. Substack’s reader guide covers reading, listening, watching, and chatting on both the web and app.

Common payment and access problems
“The app says free, but checkout asks for money.”
The free label refers to the app download. The checkout is for a creator’s premium subscription. Check the publication name, plan length, renewal terms, and final price before confirming.
“I downloaded the app, but the article is locked.”
Downloading the app does not unlock paid content. The creator may require a paid subscription or may provide only a free preview.
“The iPhone price is higher than the website price.”
Substack says Apple in-app prices may be adjusted to account for Apple’s fees. Compare the web and App Store options when both are displayed.
“I paid, but the content is still locked.”
- Confirm that you are signed in to the same Substack account used for payment.
- Check the publication page and your paid-subscription library.
- Find the purchase confirmation or receipt.
- If you paid through Apple, check the Apple account used for the subscription and available restore-purchase controls.
- Contact Substack support or the publication if valid payment has not synchronized.
“I cannot find a free subscription option.”
The publication may not offer a free tier, or the free option may appear before the paid upgrade screen. Try opening the publication’s page on the web to review its available plans.
Device and content qualifications
The current U.S. App Store listing states that the iOS app requires iOS 17.0 or later. Requirements, availability, labels, pricing, and payment flows can change. The App Store listing also advertises ad-free videos and podcasts, but that should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every screen, recommendation, promotion, or platform notice is free of promotional material.
