Often, yes—but not just because the price looks low. Costco can be a smart place to buy a laptop if you are already a member, the exact configuration is competitively priced, and you value its 90-day electronics return window and potential warranty support. It is not automatically cheaper, and a new membership can erase the savings on a one-time purchase.
Compare the specific model, specifications, total cost, return deadline, and warranty terms before deciding. Costco’s inventory and promotions change, and similar product names can hide meaningful differences.
Why Costco can be a good place to buy a laptop
Costco sells Windows laptops, Chromebooks, 2-in-1s, touchscreen models, and gaming laptops from brands including Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and MSI. Macs may also be available. Its laptop selection changes over time, and some listings may be online-only; a product shown on Costco.com is not necessarily stocked at your local warehouse.
The main advantage is often risk reduction, rather than a guaranteed lowest price:

- A longer test period: Costco says computers are subject to a 90-day return limit for U.S. purchases. That gives you time to use the laptop at home and check whether it suits your needs.
- Potential warranty extension: Costco says qualifying computers receive up to two years of warranty coverage, subject to the manufacturer’s warranty and the applicable terms.
- Technical support: Costco advertises technical and warranty support for members. It may help with setup, basic troubleshooting, or warranty routing, but it is not necessarily an in-store repair service or a faster replacement for manufacturer support.
- Bundles or member pricing: A listing may include extra storage, memory, accessories, software, or a temporary discount. Those additions can improve value—but only if the configuration itself is a good fit.
Check Costco’s electronics return policy and computer warranty terms for current conditions.
Understand the U.S. return and warranty rules
Return policy: Costco lists computers among the products that must be returned within 90 days of receipt. The clock begins when you receive the merchandise, not necessarily when you place the order. This is a limited return window—not Costco’s general return policy for other merchandise and not an indefinite refund promise for a laptop that later develops a fault.
Warranty: Costco says it extends the manufacturer’s warranty on qualifying computers for up to two years from the warehouse purchase date or online delivery date. Costco reserves the option to fulfill its second-year obligation with repair, replacement, or a refund up to the purchase price. The details depend on the product and manufacturer warranty, so check the exact listing and terms before buying.

A warranty is not accidental-damage insurance. Costco identifies common exclusions including physical and liquid damage, data backup, and software replacement. Do not assume a battery issue, malware, lost files, or a spill is covered simply because the listing says “2 Year Warranty.” Costco’s warranty information also excludes touchscreen tablets from its computer category.
Mac buyers should verify separately. Costco’s general computer warranty language applies to qualifying computers, but some product listings use Apple-specific exclusions. Do not assume a Mac receives the same Costco coverage as a Windows laptop; read the exact Mac listing. Apple says a Mac includes a one-year limited warranty and 90 days of technical support, while AppleCare+ information describes extended coverage and accidental-damage service subject to fees. Compare those terms with Costco’s listing and Apple’s direct options.
Is Costco actually cheaper?
There is no reliable blanket answer. A Costco laptop can be a strong deal, but an apparent discount may reflect a different configuration, a bundle, or a temporary promotion. Compare the exact model number and component specifications, not just the brand and product-family name.

Before comparing prices, check:
- Processor and graphics: Find the full CPU model and generation, and the specific GPU. Labels such as “Core Ultra,” “Ryzen 7,” or “i7” alone are not enough to establish performance.
- Memory and storage: Compare RAM capacity and type, whether it can be upgraded, and SSD capacity. A laptop with soldered memory may have no upgrade path.
- Display: Check resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and panel technology. A large screen is not automatically a good screen.
- Battery and portability: Compare battery capacity, weight, dimensions, and charger wattage. Consider whether USB-C supports charging and video output on that specific model.
- Ports and extras: Verify USB-A, HDMI, SD-card, Ethernet, headphone, and other ports; webcam features; Wi-Fi generation; keyboard layout and backlighting; operating-system edition; and included accessories or software.
- Purchase terms: Compare shipping, tax, warranty, return deadline, and any accidental-damage plan—not just the displayed price.

Costco’s listings and promotions are volatile; category examples or past prices are not a promise of today’s price. Compare live listings from Costco and, where useful, the Dell, Lenovo, or HP stores, as well as Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart. On marketplaces, pay attention to who sells and fulfills the listing and what warranty and return terms apply.
Include the membership cost
If you already have a Costco membership, it may be reasonable to evaluate the laptop on its price and benefits without treating your existing dues as a new purchase cost. If you would join only for the laptop, however, include the membership fee in your comparison.

Costco’s official pages currently list Gold Star at $65 per year and Executive at $130 per year, with a 2% reward on qualifying purchases for Executive members, subject to terms. Prices and conditions can change; check the current membership page.
- If a laptop costs $700 and you buy a $65 Gold Star membership only for that purchase, the simple combined outlay is $765 before any other applicable costs.
- At a 2% reward rate, an Executive upgrade that costs $65 more than Gold Star would require about $3,250 in qualifying annual purchases to earn $65 in rewards, before exclusions and other benefits. A single laptop purchase may not make the upgrade worthwhile.
These are arithmetic examples, not a guarantee about your rewards or the value of other membership benefits. If the Costco price advantage is smaller than the cost of a new membership, buying elsewhere may be the better financial choice.
When Costco is likely to be the smart choice
- You are already a member, or expected Costco savings and other use clearly justify the membership cost.
- You are shopping for a mainstream consumer laptop and Costco carries the configuration you actually want.
- The total price is competitive after matching the model’s RAM, storage, display, battery, and other specifications.
- You value having up to 90 days to assess the laptop at home, along with qualifying warranty support.
- You want a familiar retailer and are comfortable with a selection that changes and may not offer every configuration.
When another retailer may be a better fit
- You need an exact specification. Manufacturer stores may offer more configurations, including business-class systems or options for particular ports, displays, keyboards, or memory. See the current ranges at Dell, Lenovo, and HP.
- You need a specialized machine. Professional color work, workstation certification, Linux compatibility, or a niche gaming build may require a model or configuration Costco does not carry.
- You want a Mac with Apple’s service options. Costco may still have an attractive price, but compare the exact coverage language with Apple’s warranty and AppleCare+ before deciding.
- You want to inspect a particular screen or keyboard in person. A retailer with the model on display may make it easier to assess those features before buying.
- The total cost is lower elsewhere. Include membership, delivery, warranty, and return terms rather than assuming another retailer is automatically cheaper or Costco automatically wins.
Should you buy an Allstate protection plan?
Costco offers certain three-year Allstate plans for eligible computers, described as covering accidental drops and spills as well as breakdowns during normal use. The listed plans say they must be purchased within 30 days of the computer purchase and cover one item; displayed terms say there is no deductible. The plan price and current terms should be checked on the under-$500 plan or the $500-and-above plan.
These plans are not theft or loss insurance, and exclusions still apply. Consider one if the computer faces elevated drop or spill risk—for example, it travels frequently or will be used by a child—but compare its price and exclusions with manufacturer plans, credit-card benefits, or insurance you already have. Do not buy it on the assumption that every type of damage is covered.
