Yes—buying Apple products from Costco is generally safe and can be a better deal for Costco members. Costco identifies its Apple storefront as an Authorized Reseller, so Costco is not a gray-market source merely because it is not an Apple Store.
The best choice depends on the exact model, total price, return policy, warranty eligibility, AppleCare+ cost, and whether Apple offers a better trade-in, education, financing, or carrier promotion.
Is Costco an authorized Apple reseller?
Costco’s U.S. Apple storefront identifies Costco as an Authorized Reseller. That addresses the main authenticity concern: a Costco-listed Apple product is not inherently less legitimate than one bought from another authorized retailer.

Apple’s standard hardware warranty generally still applies, subject to Apple’s warranty terms. However, the retailer controls the return transaction. Apple says products purchased from another retailer must be returned to that retailer under its return policy. See Apple’s reseller policy.

Before buying, check that the individual Costco listing says the item is new, identify the seller shown on the listing, and confirm the model number and configuration. Costco’s authorized-reseller designation does not mean every product condition or every third-party listing has identical terms.

Costco’s current U.S. return policy lists computers, touchscreen tablets, smart wearable devices, cellular phones, cameras, and other categories under a 90-day limitation. Apple’s direct U.S. policy generally provides 14 days. Policies can change, so verify the live terms before ordering.
Product-by-product verdict
MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, and other Macs
Macs often offer Costco’s strongest value proposition. You may get a competitive promotional price, a longer return period, and Costco’s stated extended warranty benefit for qualifying computers. Costco says the benefit can extend the manufacturer’s warranty for up to two years from the warehouse purchase or online delivery date.
That does not necessarily mean every Mac configuration qualifies under identical terms. Confirm the product listing and current Costco warranty conditions. Costco coverage should also be viewed as defect or hardware-failure protection—not accidental-damage insurance.
Apple may be better if you need custom memory or storage, a newly released configuration, education pricing, direct financing, Apple Trade In, or Apple Store setup and support.

iPad
An iPad can still be a good Costco purchase when the price or Shop Card offer is compelling, and the 90-day return window is useful. But do not assume the Mac-style second-year Costco computer warranty applies. Costco specifically excludes touchscreen tablets from the stated computer extension.
iPhone
Compare Costco with Apple and the relevant carrier. A carrier activation, trade-in, or bill-credit promotion can outweigh a lower-looking Costco price. Costco’s return policy includes cellular phones but notes that details can vary with the carrier service contract.

Apple Watch
Costco’s 90-day electronics return period may be useful for an Apple Watch, but the stated computer warranty extension does not automatically apply because a watch is a smart wearable, not a qualifying computer under that benefit. Check the product-specific warranty and AppleCare+ terms.
AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod, and accessories
Evaluate these individually. Do not generalize Mac warranty rules to AirPods, chargers, cables, cases, Apple TV, or HomePod. Compare the SKU’s price, condition, return language, standard warranty, protection-plan eligibility, and any promotion.

How Costco’s 90-day return policy works
For listed electronics, Costco generally measures the 90-day period from the date you receive the merchandise. That is considerably longer than Apple’s usual 14-day direct-return period.

- For Costco.com orders, retain the order record and note the delivery date.
- A receipt or original packaging may help; Costco says a receipt may not always be necessary for some warehouse returns, but this is not a guarantee.
- Keep the box, accessories, and paperwork until the return window expires.
- Cellular-phone returns may be affected by the carrier agreement.
- AppleCare+ purchased separately may require separate cancellation or refund handling under the applicable transaction terms.
Do not interpret Costco’s broad satisfaction guarantee as an unlimited return privilege for Apple electronics. The 90-day electronics limitation is the key rule.
Apple warranty, Costco coverage, and AppleCare+ are different
Apple’s standard limited warranty
Apple products generally include a one-year limited hardware warranty covering eligible defects and hardware problems, subject to exclusions and conditions. It is not designed to cover accidental damage such as drops or liquid exposure.
Costco’s qualifying warranty extension
Costco says it extends the manufacturer’s warranty for up to two years for qualifying computers, televisions and projectors, and certain major appliances. Its computer category excludes touchscreen tablets. The remedy and claim process can involve repair, replacement, or refund according to Costco’s terms.

AppleCare+
AppleCare+ is a separate paid service and protection plan. Depending on the device and plan, it can extend service coverage and cover accidental damage, subject to incident fees, taxes, eligibility rules, and other terms. Costco’s Apple storefront describes AppleCare+ as including accidental-damage protection, battery service, Apple expert support, and unlimited repairs subject to applicable fees.

Costco says members may receive a discount on AppleCare+, but do not rely on an old advertised percentage as a current universal promise. Check the live Costco listing for the exact product and price. AppleCare+ availability, enrollment deadlines, deductibles, duration, and service fees vary by device.
In practical terms, a manufacturing defect may be handled through Apple’s warranty or Costco’s qualifying extension. A cracked screen or liquid damage generally requires applicable accidental-damage coverage, such as AppleCare+, rather than a defect-only warranty.

Costco’s Apple storefront advertises selected Shop Card, trade-in, and AppleCare+ offers, but promotions are temporary and SKU-specific. Executive rewards and credit-card rewards may be relevant for eligible purchases, but calculate them only if you qualify and the transaction meets the applicable terms.

For a nonmember, include the cost of joining Costco. A large Mac discount or Shop Card may justify membership; a small one-time saving may not.

When Apple is the better place to buy
Buy directly from Apple when one or more of these matter more than Costco’s possible savings:
- You need a custom Mac configuration or a product Costco does not stock.
- You qualify for Apple education pricing.
- You want Apple Trade In, direct financing, or Apple’s full purchasing ecosystem.
- You want Apple’s direct 14-day return process.
- The product has just launched and Costco has limited inventory.
- Apple’s promotion is better after considering trade-in value and financing.
- You expect to rely heavily on Apple Store support or setup services.

Support, repairs, and returns: who handles what?
- Return or refund: Costco normally handles a Costco purchase, not Apple.
- Apple warranty service: Apple Support, an Apple Store, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider may be available based on the product, location, and warranty status.
- Costco warranty extension: Costco Technical and Warranty Services handles eligible claims after the applicable manufacturer coverage, according to its terms.
- AppleCare+ claim: Use the AppleCare+ support and service route for the applicable plan.
- Other protection plan: Contact the relevant plan administrator, such as an Allstate Protection Plan, if purchased.
Costco provides technical and warranty support and manufacturer-support resources. Buying from Costco does not automatically remove access to Apple-authorized repair, but it does mean Costco—not Apple—is normally the seller for return purposes.
If the product is defective out of the box
- Check the Costco return deadline immediately.
- Photograph visible damage and save the packaging.
- Record the serial number and order information.
- Contact Costco if you want a refund or replacement within the return period.
- Contact Apple if troubleshooting or warranty service is more convenient.
- Do not assume Apple will refund a Costco purchase.
After activation, check the device’s warranty status through Apple and retain the Costco receipt or online order record. If you bought AppleCare+, save its agreement or confirmation number as well.
Buying checklist
Before paying
- Compare the exact SKU at Costco, Apple, Best Buy, Amazon sold by Amazon, and the applicable carrier.
- Confirm whether the listing is new and who the seller is.
- Calculate Shop Cards, instant discounts, rewards, tax, shipping, and membership cost.
- Check the product-specific return language.
- Confirm AppleCare+ availability, price, enrollment deadline, and service fees.
- For a Mac, verify eligibility for Costco’s extended computer warranty.
After delivery
- Inspect the device, seals, accessories, and screen promptly.
- Save the receipt and record the serial number.
- Verify Apple recognizes the product and warranty after activation.
- Keep the box until the return deadline passes.
- Set a reminder before the 90-day Costco return period ends.
Final verdict by product
- Mac: Costco is often compelling when the exact price is competitive because of the longer return window and possible qualifying warranty extension.
- iPad: Costco may win on price and returns, but do not assume the Mac warranty benefit applies.
- iPhone: Compare Costco’s offer with Apple and carrier promotions, including contract-related return terms.
- Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, and accessories: Evaluate the individual SKU rather than applying Costco’s Mac rules.
For most U.S. Costco members, buying Apple products there is perfectly reasonable. Costco is especially attractive when it has the exact configuration at a lower effective price and you value a 90-day return period. Apple is usually the cleaner choice for custom configurations, education pricing, direct trade-ins, financing, and Apple-specific purchasing support.
