No—Google was not planning to scrap Gmail. A fake shutdown notice circulated in February 2024, claiming the service would stop working on August 1, 2024. Google publicly responded that “Gmail is here to stay.” As of August 18, 2026, Google continues to offer Gmail, though it plans to retire some ways of using Gmail to manage third-party email accounts in January 2027. Those feature changes do not mean ordinary Gmail accounts are closing.
What the 2024 Gmail shutdown hoax claimed
On or around February 22, 2024, a message titled “Google is sunsetting Gmail” began circulating online. It claimed Gmail would be discontinued on August 1, 2024, and that users would no longer be able to send, receive or store messages. The date passed without Gmail shutting down. The contemporaneous ITPro report documented the false notice and Google’s response.
What Google said—and what it did not promise
On February 22, 2024, Google’s official presence on X responded to the rumor with the words: “Gmail is here to stay,” as reported by ITPro. That was a denial of the claim that Gmail itself was being shut down. It was not a promise that every Gmail feature, interface or way of connecting other accounts would remain unchanged indefinitely.

Why the fake announcement seemed believable
Google has discontinued products and features before, so some users were primed to take a shutdown claim seriously. The notice also appears to have imitated the wording and style of a genuine Google service communication. It may have been adapted from a real notice concerning Gmail’s Basic HTML view, an older interface Google was winding down. That was a change to one interface—not an announcement that Gmail would stop operating. The available reporting does not establish the fake notice’s precise origin.

Is Gmail still operating in 2026?
Yes. As of August 18, 2026, Gmail remains an active Google product. Google continues to market Gmail for business and lists Gmail in its Google Workspace plans. Its business offering includes custom-domain email and integration with Workspace tools; Google also promotes Gemini capabilities for tasks such as drafting, summaries and inbox search.
Those current product pages provide a clear check on Gmail’s status. They do not guarantee that its features, pricing or policies will never change. The useful distinction is between closing Gmail as a service and retiring a particular feature: one can happen without the other.

The real change scheduled for January 2027
Google’s support documentation describes planned changes to Gmail’s handling of third-party email accounts. Starting in January 2027, Google says it will remove:

- Gmailify: The feature that connected certain non-Gmail accounts to Gmail’s inbox tools will be removed.
- Third-party “Send as”: Gmail will no longer send messages from third-party email addresses through this feature.
Google says Gmail-to-Gmail aliases and Google Workspace “Send as” functionality are not affected. Its published schedule says notices begin in the third quarter of 2026, transition activity continues through the third and fourth quarters, and removal is scheduled for January 2027. Because that date is in the future, check Google’s support page for the latest timeline.

Who needs to review their setup?
The planned changes may matter if you use Gmail as a hub for mail from another provider—for example, if Gmail checks an Outlook or Yahoo account, if you send from a non-Gmail address using “Send as,” or if you rely on Gmailify’s organization or spam handling for an external account.
A standard personal @gmail.com account is not being discontinued. Nor does the announced change mean that a third-party mailbox itself will close. The affected workflows concern how some external accounts connect to Gmail. A Google Workspace account is also distinct from an outside mailbox imported into Gmail; Google says Workspace “Send as” is unaffected.

What to do before the change
- Check whether you import outside mail. In Gmail settings, look for “Check mail from other accounts” and review any listed addresses.
- Review sending identities. Check “Send mail as” for non-Gmail addresses you use, and note which addresses or aliases matter to you.
- Choose another way to access the outside mailbox. Google lists the provider’s own website or app, a desktop mail client configured with IMAP/SMTP, and the Gmail mobile app as alternatives for third-party accounts.
- Test your replacement early. Confirm you can receive and send from the external account using the new method, and update any important workflows before January 2027.
- Be cautious with aggregation tools. Google warns that replacement services may request email credentials or OAuth access and says it cannot guarantee their security or data practices. Review permissions and privacy terms carefully before connecting an account.
How to assess a future Gmail shutdown notice
Do not treat an alarming email or social post as proof that Gmail is closing. Open Gmail or your Google Account directly rather than following links in an unexpected notice, and look for confirmation on official Google product or support pages. Be especially cautious if a message urges you to save your account, open an attachment or re-enter credentials. The 2024 notice was a hoax; that fact alone does not establish that it was a credential-stealing campaign, but the same basic caution helps avoid phishing.
